Reading an article on the Schapelle Corby case on SMH, came across this quote:

"As in all democratic countries, the government cannot interfere with legal proceedings or in the courts whose independence is enshrined in the law."

WTF do you call George Bush passing that 11th hour bill to prolong Terry Schiavo's suffering then?!

Seriously. SERIOUSLY, what the FUCK is wrong with this world??? How can a majority of people not be outraged when this kind of thing goes on... and let it continue happening? Nay, ENDORSE it by voting them back in!

Times like this I feel like emigrating to the vaccum of space.

The same governments who pass the laws which dictate whether or not the courts are independent... seems a bit circular to me. There is no such thing as a judicial system that is completely independent of the government under who's auspices it operates.

WTF do you call George Bush passing that 11th hour bill to prolong Terry Schiavo's suffering then?!

A).... there are already a number of threads devoted to that topic, and,
B) US Congress passed the bill by a fairly sizeable margin. Bush had the choice of either letting the democratically elected representatives of the people who pay his salary do their thing, or Veto the bill - effectively nullifying the wishes of the people, and,
C) the bill did nothing to prolong her suffering, it allowed the federal court to rule on the issue, which it did, hence Terry Schiavo is no longer being fed.

Seriously. SERIOUSLY, what the FUCK is wrong with this world??? How can a majority of people not be outraged when this kind of thing goes on... and let it continue happening? Nay, ENDORSE it by voting them back in!

So democracy is only OK if everything goes your way then?

He does raise a good point, even if the example was poor.

As written in the law of just about every western country, the judicial system is supposed to be seperate from the Government.

The Government creates the laws. The Judicial system enforces it. That is supposed to be the limit of their involvement.

Legally, Dubbya should not have been able to make a bill which forces the judiciary's hand. But since it was a popular move, no one seems to care that the bill might have been illegal.

Or, by the same token, the Highway.

He didn't make it... His simply signed it - that's his job, to sign bills passed by congress unless he has a very good reason for vetoing them.

Nor did the bill force the judiciary's hand. It merely allowed them to rule on the matter. It would be fairly obvious from the ruling that was handed down that they weren't pressured into the ruling by Bush and his right-to-life cronies.

Perhaps that was his intent.

But what political gains has he made from having a federal judge order her food-tube removed?
