View Full Version : Vote for March Photo Contest - Water
Thank you to everyone who participated in the monthly assignment.
Some images were larger than the nominated size (1024 on longest side), so I took the liberty to resize them - hope no one minds. If you posted your sig in the picture, I also removed that so as not to give away the photographers name. Once again, I trust this doesnt upset anyone. :)
First place prize: 300 rep points!
Second place prize: 200 rep points
Third place prize: 100 rep points
Next months theme is organic (http://forums.zgeek.com/showthread.php?t=32851).
You have the opportunity to choose the winner for the March photo contest. The theme is water.
Winners:
1st - asdfjkl - 300 points
2nd - tie between Canalien and frgn8r - 150 points each.
3rd - none
Because 2nd place is a draw, then 3nd and 3rd points are split evenly.

White water looks like the effect of long exposure.
Guys, there are 21 entries. Not 20 as I first posted.
Please dont miss entry 21 (like I did)....
:)
Thats why I was slow getting the poll up - quickly added the entry I missed.
I'll make sure I get my act together next time.

White water is technically really good but there's something missing. I don't know what, maybe it's because I've seen a lot of these "slow fall" pictures. It's still in my favs and deciding on how to vote will be difficult.

Holy crap! I just took some random picture and threw it in an email. Apparently there are some real photographers among the Geeks. I'm not sure my dodgy camera can take photos of that sort of quality.
Still...One vote would be nice. :D

This comp needs multiple voting. There's at least 5 photos here that I would vote for.
*Competing interests: None, no photo entered in this month's comp.
Ahhhh.... mezza baths leading the pack, although i didn't vote for that photo.
Guess my ISP was playing up or something.
Next month I will post them to Zgeek gallery.
Not had a good run the last few days, huh?

I agree that we really need more than one vote. Or, even better, some kind of preference system where we can rank them. Unfortunately I don't think that the latter would work too well with the current software (at least, not to my limited knowledge).

i would prefer to see people post some comments about pics, this is see as the most rewarding thing to come out of the comp, maybe thats best done after the voting is closed.

The idea of posting details about the picture is a good one, i think we all should do it after the voting is complete. perhaps next time we can include the details with the initial posting?
am i gunna be bitten the arse cause i scanned a 35mm pic and the scanner aint too clean? like dust on the other side of the glass......

I Got A Vote!!!! :D
I voted for The Falls, I think it's just so clear and a great spot from which to take a photo, I always find it tough to take in a whole waterfall from any vantage point. Tops work.
I'm with you on the Haha pic - either extraordinarily lucky or somebody went through a truckload of film. Still, for some reason The Falls worked for me.
And no, my photo was not The Falls. :)

it's carrington falls, just outside of robertson - very photogenic place

Where's the winner (total sp problem) sposed to have got his pic from? I highly doubt he's been posting from a sub, and I reckon there's a bit of an issue with authenticity here. You should rename the next one "April Google Images Search Contest".
mmmmmm I think you should be careful what you say.
Never heard of a concrete sub before.

It might just be me, but I don't "get" Canalien's picture. What was it that people focussed on when they voted for it? Honest question if someone can shed some light on this.

I hope you are joking. That's the stupidest thing I've read today and it's a serious accusation. A beached submarine made of concrete with fisherman on top, which somehow has the conning tower unattached to the hull? Are you legally blind?
If your imagination can't conceive how the picture was taken it doesn't mean it's stolen. And since you've implying that the image was lifted from somewhere with a Google search the least you should do is to post a link to what you think is the original.
Wow this month's shots were all incredibly impressive, i'm kind of glad I didn't take the time to go out and actually get a shot because i'm afraid I would have been smeared.
To the winner, was your shot taken with a polarized filter? I noticed how the water was very smooth and fluid-looking rather than incredibly reflective as with most long exposure shots of that type.

I am the creator of splash, thanks to those who voted and the positive comments and well done everyone else to who entered there were some very worthy competition indeed.
As some of you Newcastle members noticed this photo was taken at the very photogenic Merewether Ocean Baths. This was taken about 20 minutes after sunrise.
The technical details are as follows.
Film - FujiChrome Velvia 100 ISO 35mm Slide Film
Camera - Pentax MX-50 SLR
Focal length - about 30-40mm
Apature f/22
Shutter 1/4 sec
I also used a NDx2 filter as well which slowed the film down to the equivalent of a 50 ISO which is the film i normally prefer to use. (I may even have used an NDx4, to be honest I cant remember)
Yeap Kyle you are correct. I also used a polarising filter which greatly cut down the glare from the sun on the water. Next time you are wearing you polarising sun glasses and there is glare on water or glass or something, look at it both with the glasses on and off and you will see what a polarising filter does when you put it on your lens. They reduce the glare from most non metalic objects.
The tiny apature and NDx2 filter (and to a very small extend the polarising filter) cut the light through the lens to allow for the longer shutter speed to catch the movement in the water.
I made a 24x16 inch print of this and it came out quite sharp. I was pretty happy with it.
At lunch time I will post some other photo's that I have taken that involve water and how I took them if anyone is interested in seeing them.
Oh yeah, and the pump house does look quite like a submarine.
Thanks again!

You sir are an idiot. -rep
Well done asdfjkl,
Thanks for the description on how you did the photo, was a real help.
I have just gone out and ordered a heap of filters for my camera, might have to get some NDx2/x4 ones aswell.
I'll post how I took my photo tonight when I get the chance.

K, was a bit pissed when I posted that... Didn't notice the whole it being beached thing - plus there's no way I cbf looking for it on GI. I'm happy to accept that it's legit though, probably shouldn't have posted a direct attack on a particular photo.
edit: Seeing the picture sober, you're right - isn't at all a submarine. My apologies asdfkl, (or however you type it).
