Exactly 150 years ago, an itinerant printer and journalist self-published a small pamphlet of poems that changed literature and the American perspective forever. Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" was a thunderous shock to the world poetically, politically and conceptually.

Breaking with tidy English verse, Whitman created a new winding stream-of-consiousness style that was deeply stamped by his - and his country's - individualism. Instead of musings about aestheic ideals, Whitman told of the beauty in the lives of carpenters, shoemakers, sewing girls, and the fantastic multitude of mundane nature.

Reading this poet is always an enriching an powerful experience. And, if you are seriously interested in writing, it is always sure to spur one's creativity. So go check it out at The Walt Whitman Archive (http://www.whitmanarchive.org/).
