View Full Version : Dateline last night

Did anyone see Dateline last night? They had a story about an American journo who was embedded in Iraq with a platoon. He witnessed first hand (and caught it on camera) one of the soldiers executing an unarmed wounded civillian. Basically they were in an area with a bunch of wounded not moving laying on the ground. There was one dude lying up against the wall wounded with no guns when one of the soldiers goes "is he dead?". The other one then aimed his rifle, shot the civillian in the head and then went "he is now."

At first I was like "wtf, that is sick", but I started to think about how insurgents are booby trapping wounded and dead civillians to take out soldiers, how maybe the soldiers don't have time to take care of every wounded civillian etc. But then I thought they're in Iraq supposedly for the people, they should be taking care of them. And what's the point in shooting a wounded civillian? He had no guns, no obvious affiliation with insurgents and he was wounded so he couldn't really do much. And it's not like the guy was asking the soldier to shoot him cause he was in pain and thought he was going to die anyway.

The story then went on to say that the journo came back to the same site the next day with a bunch of soldiers. One of them went inside, and the journo heard gun shots. He came back out and the commander said "anyone inside?" The soldier responded holding up his hand with 5 fingers, to say 5 people. The commander said "Did you shoot them?" the soldier says yes, the commander then goes "Were they armed?" and the soldier shrugs his shoulders. They then go inside and see the same wounded, except they're all dead.

This was reported in the news, although no networks showed the actual footage taken. I saw the footage last night which proves all of this happened. After all that, the the journo talks about how he took alot of flak for airing the story (thousands of hate mail and death threats from Americans).

Did anyone else see it? Even just reading what I've written, what do you think? Do you think the soldiers are justified to kill wounded civillians given that they may be booby trapped or working with insurgents?

PS, if Nodbugger replies to this, please ignore him. I want an intelligent discussion without the usual "u r stupid" comments and annoying trollish arguments riddled throughout it.

So THAT'S (http://home.iprimus.com.au/budmartin/frank/Pics%5CAyres%20Rock.jpg) where you've been hiding, aye?

There was a thread about this when it first happened. I don't know where you live but i've seen news clips of it here in Australia. And i've seen plenty of american news network coverage too. And i'm talking about the actual video too. In most instances the part with the shooting had just a blank screen. I also noticed how the soldier said he'd taken out 5 guys and when asked if unarmed, he shrugged. This is unacceptable. I've also seen footage of them shooting a wounded IED planter, shooting guys who are running out of a burning bus, shooting INTO and above a crowd of demonstrators. They can't just kill people indiscriminately like that.

Yes I saw it...when they showed the dead insurgents one had blood still gushing out of his head.

BTW in my opinion they had no reason to shoot them. They were wounded and unarmed, and as such posed no danger to the American troops.

Holy shit. Well I haven't seen reports of this stuff ANYWHERE...Not that I've been particularly on the lookout for Iraq-related stories recently...Got links DOGG?

I read that they were Blazé about killing civilians, but I'd assumed their killings were primarily people who didn't stop at check points and shit (which I can kind of understand considering the number of car bombings etc)...But that is seriously fucked up.

That soldier who executed the unarmed person - insurgent or not - committed a war crime. Simple, clear cut war crime.

I'm in Brisbane man, I just haven't seen anything about this. Like Bifrost I haven't really been on the lookout for stories about Iraq. I know all about the marriage between a dude with massive ears and an ugly chick (oh, I mean the royal marriage), but I never heard about this. They said on Dateline that when the story first aired cbs only showed a still image of the body. Good to hear that they at least showed the rest of the video later on.

As for the rest of the stuff - woah. People can try to justify that shit all they want, but in the end it's still killing harmless people for no reason. Fucked up.

Fuck I had no idea about this. Gimme links!

Shooting wounded is against the Geneva convention and is a war crime. The sick, wounded and shipwrecked must be cared for adequately. Belligerents must treat members of the enemy force who are wounded, sick or shipwrecked as carefully they would their own.

Shooting unarmed wounded who pose no threat is agaisnt the Geneva convention.

The guy in the building was the only one shot. He was the only one who had posed a threat at the time. The guy in the alley was never said to be unarmed. And even a person who is wounded, yet still fighting, is dangerous.

How about we send you to Iraq to make sure they are unarmed.
