I got my hands on OSX 10.4 a little early, so I thought I'd huck a review out for the mac-in-tards out there.

Installation took for freakin EVER!!! 3+ hours on the poor iBook. Oh well, get ready for a big install!

After the install and reboot, once again a full freakin 30+ min of boot time. I was wonder what the shit did I do??? this pig fucker is going to decimate my mac! Finally got to a screen and logged in, MORE mutha fuckin time! I'm like "holy shit, what a fuckin joke. This is why it's called Tiger, them fuckin cats just lay around and be lazy all day in the African Sun"

It shocked me..... All this time, it was journalizing my drive. Hurray for the de-gayness of Panther; which wouldn't defrag anything over 20MB. Guess my laptop was in dire need of a drive squeeze. After this, It actually ran great! Did a Terminal /top and noticed a big peformance of the cpu and ram usage:) whoopie-deee

At first glance it's plain panther style. Didn't see anything new or exciting that jumped up like changing from 98 to XP. everything was the same. Some of my Apps didn't work right (Little Snitch the app firewall went byebye, had to update it)
Jumped in the app section and found the new Super-duper Automator. Let's face it...... It's a front end for cronjobs. nuff said. But, it's better than nothing. quite handy for me to automate backups and the likes without having the goddamn iCal ding at my ass once a month.

Next up: The Dashboard..... what can I say about this..... It's something I found utterly useless for the time being. Dashboard is composed of "Widgets" that are mini apps inside of the Dashboard. things like a calculator, mini iTunes switcher, a clock, weather, stocks, translator, and my all time favorite!!!!! The in flight, real time, Air-Plane tracker. Oh yes, the power of Tiger will change how Terrorists will think..... Think Mac when hijacking a plane :ha:
The iTunes one baffled me too, you have to have iTunes OPEN to run it in the dashboard....... I heard the brought Einstien back to life for this one.

Widgets are there..... I guess that they're going to boom once the official release comes out. Wouldn't mind having a snmp tracker there, or something that would actually be usefull compared to a orange calculator.

Safari has a new RSS feed in it. But.... Why???? it's a friggin browser.
Would be cooler to toss the RSS up in the dashboard...... but that would make some sense that apple is trying to divert from.

Quicktime 7, it's broken half the time, cant run .avi for some reason. Waiting for the fix.

Here's also a nifty thing......the defrag journnalizing at begining, free'd up about 3+ gigs of drive space. Props on that.

Spotlight: the app is kinda neat, just a faster way of finding files by not just name, but bits of what's on the inside... got a doc that ya forgot the title to? just throw in a small portion of a sentance

Install: C+
Speed: A-
Automator: B+
Dashboard: D
Spotlight: B

Really.... it's not too bad, It's probably worth the $150 USD to clean and speed up the OS. but all the other eye candy.... just not fond of. You'll probably see on the 29th this month.

still trying to find a pirated copy of this new version........ going to rock like a masochist!

Panthers beat the Tigers SANFL on Saturday.. coincidence?

The QuickTime not viewing AVI thing may be because it's using DivX or XVid. Try installing both and see if that makes a difference. It's a trap many fall into. DivX and XVid are not supported by QuickTime natively, but then you knew that already. ;)

Thanks for the review. Still going to buy it. Guess I'm a sucker for that sort of thing. Always the early adopter. :D

Spotlight was the thing I was looking forward to as well as the new Mail app. Dashboard and Automater don't really seem that appealing to me though.

You're joking right?? a benchmark? what the shit?

Talked to other people about QT7, and they have some issues as well. Remember, I'm kinda using a Tiger that's not released yet.

Mail is..... different, odd looking. Going to have to mess with it some more. though I'm diggin the look.

No tabbing in Safari. did include pop-up blocking, little perk.

man, i love all mac oS's, no matter what the dealzy is with them lol, have u heard any rumors of a new windows OS??

The only reason I'd consider upgrading is its apparantly a fair bit faster than Panther on slower macs. My home mac is a Graphite G4 powermac, so it needs all the performance boosts I can muster.

I still dont intend on paying for it however.

i'm runnin it on a g3 iBook..... har. but yeah, the speed is significant after booting. still kinda slow on the boot. but I don't turn my laptop off much. Get Tiger for speed

im not sure bout that, i saw on the apple site that they were going to be selling two versions of the OS, one being a single install disc and the other a multi(up to five) install disc.....so i dunno, if your into pirating, then u will be sweet as someone will figure out some way of installing it!!!

wolfpac181
26-04-2005, 04:28 AM
Single disc is a dvd. multi is cd.

a g3 that's above a 500 and 256 ram will run it just fine. prolly better than panther.

I think this will be the big selling point is the enhanced peformance.

Wow, you guys who buy apples will go for anything. Pay $129 US to buy a defragger. That makes a lot of friggin sense. WHy don't you just set up a special Steve Jobs account and send him money for nothing. Or better yet, send it to me, and I'll defrag your hard drives automatically too.

Well defragging the hard drive is included LOL. Or in linux its a freeware utility.

I can defrag it for you, log in, go to the console, type rm -r* it should do a pretty good job of cleaning up stuff :D

I can just imagine what you all would say if Microsoft came out with an OS whose main benefits where it did a good job of defragmenting your hard drive and it ran faster (most probably related to defragmenting your hard drive). And then called it an upgrade to XP and charged over a hundred dollars for it. Oh yeah, and threw in a few searching utilities and eye candy. Come on, admit it. Steve Jobs is taking you for a ride this time.

Well defragging the hard drive is included LOL. Or in linux its a freeware utility.Of course Windows needs defragging so often because of its inferior filesystem.

Journalling apparently is supposed to take care of that automagically so why do you need a seperate tool for the job? ;)

Ummmm you do know about Longhorn right? Not only is M$ copying off Apple, they're charging twice the price.

And remember, there's two versions of XP and quite probably two versions of Longhorn... Pro and Home. Pro has all the features and Home has none of the really useful stuff because it's designed for "Home" users.

OS X has extremely powerful tools in its backend but has all the tools that a home user needs without having to mess around, all for half the price of Windows Pro which is the only version that compares to OS X. Add to that a 5 user license is only about $50 more and you've got something that Windows doesn't even come close to in cost/performance.

And don't expect Longhorn to run on your old PC without having to upgrade your RAM to at least 512Mb. From what I've heard it's extremely reasource hungry, even more so than XP was.

so wait.....
a upgrade for a apple is worth a whine when it comes to $. though I didn't, didn't have to input a product key when upgrading from 10.2 to 10.3, and now 10.4... never spent above $600 on my mac. (that includes the actual laptop)

yet a windows server costs thousands, tons of security issues, but freeBSD does the same job better? whoopie dooo.
why go with RedHat and pay $, when Debian is around?
Why pay Symantec for virus protection when there's AVG?

It's lame, and I used to be a person that bitched about Macs and how crappy they were for the price. Then I bought a PC with Windows ME. (don't get started on who took Users for a ride)

I broke down and got one cause I wanted a laptop. Started getting fond of how clutterless it is. after a while, besides playing games on the xp machine, I use that mac more. Builtin utils like ssh, ftp, unix commandline, it makes more sense to use that to talk to *nix servers.

It's all perogratives I guess....

I've barely scratched how tiger is cause I'm still learning it. Each time I get a chance to mess with it some more, I find more items and think "hey that's kinda nice to have" At face value, it was just Panther with a defrag, but I gotta check it out more. Apple kept a tight lid on it's production. so it's tuff to see all the things Tiger has added in. Half the stuff is for Idea-development of the User. Better than "Here's your new dell. Go out, get AOL, look at porn, get viruses, and don't learn how to maintain this PC" Would rather have stuff that I can mess with, learn from, apply, and grow on it.

Messed with Automator today.... kinda nice. made a few audit scripts. Does have a way to go, but nice start on something that has potential.

Mail has really been cleaned up. IMAP through SSL runs soooo much faster.

Switched from the Internet Explorer to Safari...... Safari really is hella faster now.

Thingy was talking earlier about AppleTalk and other zones.... found out that they really upped that as well. I dinkered with it for a few min today and see that it's a good Idea, but still kinda bugged. Will prolly need a patch. Also need to see how it does with the Linux zones.

more when it comes. Second day at it..... so I'll prolly keep bunging away at complaints and highlights.

Ok, so you are comparing Longhorn as if its the equivalent to Windows ME, and you are comparing a windows SERVER to a 600 dollar laptop and apparantly linux redhat, which it cannot run. I am confused.

Ok, so you are comparing Longhorn as if its the equivalent to Windows ME, and you are comparing a windows SERVER to a 600 dollar laptop and apparantly linux redhat, which it cannot run. I am confused.

That you are. Points were:

Microsoft made shit OS decisions too. Hence the WinME remark.

Not everyone mac user is taken for a ride; I didn't, hence the Laptop remark
And ya saw that there are others pimping out a torrent of it, so not all mac people are "Shovel $ to Apple cause they say to"

Why pay $ for shit. Hence the redhat to debian remark.

Unix backbones are more stable than Window Backbones. Hence the FreeBSD remark.

Oh, FYI I do have servers running on less powerful machines than this G3 under BSD Backbones. Record is an IRC server (1997-2005) No problems till the hard-drive died. Maybe a comparison would be in order?

OH, there is a good Fedora that does run on PPC. Not really redhat, but to the likes.

But apple rocks, Go Steve Jobs, and Microsoft is only copying Apple anyway.

What CPU's are in the new Xbox2 again???

And there is some props that should be given to Apple. Gotta say they give apps that have more set to Creative Development. Not just a "here's your dell, go get AOL, download porn, play some WoW, get a virus, and don't learn how to Really operate a PC" Maybe I'm more upset at the person behind the PC that is doing this than the Vendor.... who knows???

I'm not at all anti Microsoft or anti-anything. My Line of work, I should know the jist of ALL OS's and this is just a review of Tiger. I dig my laptop cause I use shitloads of commandlines and SSH. Dig the speed of a 600mhz Mac compared to my 2Ghz windows machine.
Going to be giving a review of longhorn later. We'll See:)

Yeah but does it have the tear away tabs?

I remember reading about them a month or two ago and I could have sworn it was from an upcoming features story about OS X, but it may have been put back or not as upcoming as they put forth.

Or maybe MS stole it off them and won't give it back ;) :D
