View Full Version : U.S. may allow nuke strikes over WMD
WASHINGTON (Kyodo) The U.S. military is considering allowing regional combatant commanders to request presidential approval for pre-emptive nuclear strikes against possible attacks with weapons of mass destruction on the United States or its allies, according to a draft nuclear operations paper.
The March 15 paper, drafted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is titled "Doctrine for Joint Nuclear Operations," providing "guidelines for the joint employment of forces in nuclear operations . . . for the employment of U.S. nuclear forces, command and control relationships, and weapons effect considerations."
"There are numerous nonstate organizations (terrorist, criminal) and about 30 nations with WMD programs, including many regional states," the paper says in recommending that commanders in the Pacific and other theaters be given an option of pre-emptive strikes against "rogue" states and terrorists and "request presidential approval for use of nuclear weapons" under set conditions.
The paper identifies nuclear, biological and chemical weapons as requiring pre-emptive strikes to prevent their use.

what gives america the right to nuke countries? when you saying these countries dont have the right to even own nukes, let alone use them?
Nuclear weapons are bad, but every country needs to stop having them.
Saying, oh you cant develope nuclear weapons, they're evil, and if you do we'll use them on you. Thats just hypocritical and stupid. And it shows america is the only country posing a nuclear threat to anyone. As they are the only people saying they will use them.

I'm speaking for the future, if something like this passes, you asshat
and are you saying something like this isnt a threatening gesture to anyone who isn't on the good side of the United States?
On the other hand, i think it's kind of a given that if you think someones going to attack you, its a good idea to get the pre-emptive hit in first. Whether its right or wrong or not, its survival innit...
I don't potentially see anything wrong with that idea (well i DO, but if you're the country thats afraid someone else is going to attack you, you're going to want to attack first) other than it kind of fucks up global stability.
Frankly I don't think some paper like this needs to be made public... its kind of a "duh"
When the sitaution comes up, why couldnt they just ask for presidential approval then? Why do they need to ask if they can ask for presidential approval?

Easily edited to an Iranian prospective
providing "guidelines for the employment of forces in nuclear operations . . . for the employment of Iranian nuclear forces, command and control relationships, and weapons effect considerations."
"There are about 30 nations with WMD programs, including many regional states," the paper says in recommending that commanders be given an option of pre-emptive strikes against "rogue" states and "request Shura approval for use of nuclear weapons" under set conditions.
The paper identifies US & Israel nuclear, biological and chemical weapons as requiring pre-emptive strikes to prevent their use.
Would you trust a 20 year Veteran of the best police force in the world with a gun Or the 23 year old crack who cannot stop twitching? I wouldn't trust either George Bush, Vlad Putin, Kim Jong-il or Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei with the nuclear button. I wouldn't want anyone (20 year vet cop or crackwhore) walking around the streets with flame thrower in their hands.

An army is not a police force. They are not trained as such, and they should not be deployed as such. Taking people trained to kill and expecting them to enforce laws is asking for trouble. America's own posse comitatus (http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-cp/comrel/factfile/Factcards/PosseComitatus.html) act prohibits the use of the military to enforce civilian laws.
And if you can't see the hypocrisy of the only nation in the world to have used nuclear weapons in a military conflict threatening to use nuclear weapons in their quest to rid the world of nuclear weapons, you need to pay more attention.

Well for one Iran does not need self defense. Two we are not acting as if we are evil to them. We are advising them not to make Nuclear weapons as there is no point for them to have them.

Police are trained to kill. And I believe you read that wrong. The Coast Guard at any time can arrest a civilian. The military can do it only when allowed to by congress. They do list exceptions in there.
There is no hypocrisy in that, because we WILL be the last to give them up. That is all. We will use them if they are used on us, that is the only time. In Japan it was different because we were the only ones, but now many others have them. And until they stop making them, we won't.

Police are trained to kill as a last resort, not as their primary purpose. And nobody ever taught the NYPD's finest how to silently garrote an enemy sentry.

I believe you read that wrong. The Coast Guard are a civilian force, not a military one. There is specific mention made of the fact that they have to travel on Navy boats, because the Navy cannot arrest people. Did you stop to consider why it takes an act of congress before the military is permitted to involve itself in civilian law enforcement? There's a name for governments that use the military to enforce civil laws. It's tyranny.

So where is the incentive for anybody else to give them up? America has nuclear weapons, and is stating a willingess to use them. For smaller nations, nuclear weapons are the only means they have of leveling the playing field against a superior force, and if the U.S. isn't going to give their weapons up, why should anyone else?

US announced pre-emptive nuclear strike.
China followed suit and announced pre-emptive nuclear strike.
US will nuke china pre-emptively because they think china might nuke them pre-emptively because us might nuke them pre-emptively because china might nuke them pre-emptively because .... you get the drift.
You know, if pre-emptive strike were a policy back in the cold war, we would be living in an ice age right now. So basically we have someone restarting another more dangerous cold war, only this time, he's against the world rather than just the russians.
If nukes were start to fly around, I'll make sure I grab the nearest hot chick, and shag till its all bright, hot and quiet.

Your country's military is stupid enough now, what's going to stop you from using them? And what gives you the right to make your country the leader of the world? Why should you be allowed to have nukes and other country's not allowed? And why would your country not plan to use them if they've proposed the idea?
