Belgian beer is now being stocked by a lot of bottle shops in the "The Grape" chain. I know the one on Wardell St (near junction of Samford Rd) was stocking a selection a few months ago. I've also seen it in a bottle shop not far from the commonwealth bank on Brunswick Street.

having spent many years consuming comercial beers, i have found that the best beer is the 1 u make yourself
i can make 60 stubbies for approx $20, in a basic brew kit,
but the scope is open 2 customize it how u like it,
i added a dozen tabasco chilli's 2 a brew, came out ok, a touch of bite n a nice flavour( extra chilli;s next time )
but any flavours can b added, extra hops, more malt,. more dextrose(=more alchohol %)cracked grains,. bannana,s
blackberries,. its endless,.. n good fun experimenting

Amen to that.

Yeah, but those basic kits are usually focussed on cost... and tell you to use (gasp) sugar... much better if you substitute DME for the sugar - unless you like a light-textured beer of course!

Oh yeah, it's great fun. Particularly since you can't really get a good "true" ale as a commercial brew, but it's reeeeally easy to brew yourself. Mmmmm....

One thing that does annoy me is that the variety of ingredients, especially yeast varieties, is rather limited in Oz. I used to be a big fan of Danstar Nottingham, but I've never seen it in Oz.

that's probably what i mean, seeing as i've never seen it written before, only spoken.

apparently it's hard to get in australia (checked all pubs and bottle shops in the city). it's a german beer, arguably the best one, as bitburger (what network engineers eat) tastes like shit

geggle
16-07-2002, 02:50 PM
Weisse is a wheat beer, which means it is generally light in colour and texture. As it's a wheat beer, not barley, it will taste significantly different from the beers you are probably used to. Another name used is Weizen, or more likely Hefe-Weizen.

The difference between Weizen and Hefe-Weizen is yeast. Hefe- means yeast, so a hefe-weizen still has the yeast sludge and will taste very yeasty. You're supposed to pour a Hefe-Weizen into a glass until the last inch or so is left in the bottle, then shake up the yeast in the bottle and pour all of it into the glass, making a really cloudy beer. Common flavour hints you might detect in a Hefe-Weizen are banana and cloves.

A good Hefe-Weizen is very very tasty. The trick with all imported beers is to find one that's been stored and transported properly.

See here (http://www.beerhunter.com/styles/weisse.weissbier_weizenbier.html) for more information.

Pauliner makes one that is especially nice. you put a slice o lemon in it an WOW. it's one of the greatest summer beers ever. but it's not great to tie one on with. you wake up with this yeast taste in your mouth that is pretty nasty.

also, i tried tequiza. not too bad but i prefer to have a tequila with a corona chaser than a beer that tastes kinda like it.

I'm down to my last 5 bottles of Black Rock Nut Brown Ale. Looks like it's time to put down another brew. Anyone have any suggestions or recipes? Its a toss-up between a mild and a bock at the moment ( the wife doesn't like hoppy beers).

I considered weetbix and jellybean stout, but I'd have to source a decent yeast first.

Porter - the old Three Threads eh. Damn good idea, Geggle, thanks.

I tried to find my recipe for weetbix & jelly bean stout, but I think it got tidied out. Roughly, its a box of weetbix, hops or hop essence all fermented up, and instead of sugaring the bottles, prime them with a black j-bean.

I've no idea what hops were originally specified, and I've a feeling that they would be outdated now anyway. I'd go for Fuggles or Goldings (they're pretty much the same anyway.)

Well I have to say that one of my all time fav beers is not even in your list at all - Coopers Pale Ale followed closely by Coopers Vintage Ale.

Since being in the UK Stella has been beer of choice - but sometimes when cash is short of hand you find youself forced to drink Tennants (which is worse than XXXX). Other beers that have taken my fancy over here have been Kronenbourg and the standard Grolsh. Cant believe the amount of people that drink Miller and Bud over here - I'd preffer to drink my own piss - but at least the tinnies over here are half a litre...

Anyone remember the Tooheys New 5 litre kegs they released last year? think theyve done it a couple of times now - but that was an excellent idea - no constantly getting up to go and get a new beer from the fridge, you were set for at least an hour or so.

yeah they do a limited release every year - or they used to anyway - if you have a case of the first vintage relased (think it was like '98 or '99) you can get some big bucks for it.

couple of vintages and your on your way - had a pretty high alc content - bloody costly drink too

woah, now this is some tasty shit right here. Bought a 6-pack back around '99 and kept 4 under the stairs for the suggested 18 months (!). Original alc/cont=7ish, cellared alc/cont=11+!!

I know it's not strictly a beer, but I loooooooove mead. Used to be able to buy bottles of it down near the Rocks, but haven't seen it commercially for a few years. If only I had a brewing kit, 5 kilos of honey and some spices.

W00T! I'm glad to hear that. Has anyone spotted a beer called Blue Moon for sale over here? I became addicted to it in the US. It's a weissbier (I think) but it has herbs and spice and stuff in it, which makes it taste very crisp, almost like a cider. Bizzare, but yummo.

Schneider & Sohn, Aventinus Wheat Doppelbock Ale

For those of you who like a full-bodied ale, this is to die for. It is, quite simply, an orgasm in a beer bottle.

But don't take my word for it. A review is here (http://www.bottledbeer.co.uk/beer.asp?beerid=544).

From the Oxford Bottled Beer Database (http://www.bottledbeer.co.uk/beer.asp?beerid=366):

Seems that Sam Adams has gone even further than this beer. Their latest is 'Millenium'. It is 20% alc/vol with no added spirits. It is unlikely that many of us will sample this beer; there were only 3000 bottles, which sold for $200 each. It is reported that bottle #1 was auctioned on Ebay for almost $5,000. And to think, I complained about the cost of a $10.00 six pack the other day.

I really enjoy Lapin Kulta - 'The Golden Beer of Lapland' for the normal couple of beers.

(Why is my HTML broken??? I had a lovely pic of a can to go here...)

For something different, nearly all of the belgian white beers are excellent. Especially Leffe Blond. For something unusual and meady there's a lovely little drop called Trolli which is a honey beer: it's perfect for one glass but gets a bit sweet after more. When in Aus I imbibe the golden crisp beauty that is Carlton Cold.

Well, ok then. Long post coming up. We broke up for xmas as you do and went to the pub as you do, got leathered as you... well you get the idea. Anyway, comes time for us to go home, or back to mine for some more ale and that. So there's like five of us stood wating for a taxi, one pulls up. Now you can only get four in most taxis, but that wasn't stopping us. Hang on brief discription of size, me = 16 & 1/2 stone, Sickers 20 stone, Mossy 14 stone, Halty = 17 stone, Sid = 9 stone + driver=fook knows. We're all cramped up waiting for this guy to set off and he says: "I'm just off to the bank" I'm thinking bit strange that, anyways Mossy starts shouting out the window "Get your tits out" etc as he does after a few. Copper comes over, "Keep it down lads... Hang on, How many of you're in here? C'mon get out!"

So we all pile out, falling on the pavement. Sid starts saying to the copper "I know you. You were our road safety officer at school, you were alright you. How you doing, good to see you again" Arse licking bastard. Anyway it must have worked 'cos he let us off and told us to get another taxi.

So we gets another one, bigger one, seven man one. We're piling down westgate (a long pub run) and Sid and Mossy's wrestling in the back, shouting and bawling. Taxi driver says. "Shut up calm down I'm driving. If you don't calm down you're getting out." I starts saying "C'mon pack it in, chill out" Which caused me to start getting throttled by Mossy. I gets him off me and the driver starts pulling into the next lane. I'm like: "You're in the wrong lane mate" "I'm fucking not" he says "Get out" and pulls over. Boots us all out. I says "How much do we owe you?" "Nothing" he says. I says "Nice one, it's only a five minute walk now"

Got booted out of two taxis. Or so I thought.

Anyway gets back to work yesterday (Monday) and Halty, who decided not to come back to mine in the second taxi, says the first taxi we got in wasn't even a taxi. It was just some poor fookah going to the cash point. When we got out he looked for the plate on the back, not there, and there wasn't any taxi type stuff (radio etc) inside either.

First off I'd just like to say that I think most American beer (Bud, Miller) is pretty crappy.

Flame me if you will but I've tried it and it's like watered down piss.
I've tried Canadian beer too (e.g Kokanee) which was only a few steps up.

I've become quite a big James Squire Amber Ale fan. I like my beer to be a bit hoppy and not too bland.

Also I've been drinking quite a bit of Tiger beer and Asahi.

I just plain old love Beer. Especially on a hot day. Sitting in an open pub under a tree with my scooner/pint. It's just wonderful.

MacGuire's Strawberry Beer.

It's a light beer, a hint of pink in the colour and the slightest bit of a sweetness through the flavour and an aftertaste like strawberries. I love it. You can only get it from one pub in saskatoon, saskatchewan (canada).

Canadian beer is good, if usually a bit bland in flavour. It's mostly light stuff, not bitter at all. But make it ice cold.....ooooooh....

Beer and clamato. yes, that's right. Tomato juice will suffice, but it's not quite the same thing. Pour enough into a glass of beer to colour it red - just enough to make it opaque (so you can't see your buds through the glass). IT'S GOOD.

/me wants beer now.......*clink, clink, pshhttt*...ahhhhhhhh:p

Ok this is the best thread I have stumbled across well next to the boobs in the pron section. Favorite weak beer:

Budweiser. Only beer I can drink all day and not pass out. One of my top wheat beers is Sierra Nevada Wheat. Here is the stats on that beer:

Alcohol Content: 4.4% by volume Bittering Hops: Perle
Beginning Gravity: 12.0 Plato Finishing Hops: Strisselspalt
Ending Gravity: 2.7 Plato Malts: Pale Malt,
Yeast: Top Fermenting
Ale Yeast Wheat Malt,
Dextrin Malt

Now the Sierra Nevada Kleph was talking about is about the strongest beer made in the States besides Malt Liquour. But shit that is best drunk out of a bag and in the streets. Bigfoot ale has a great taste and mighty powerful. A sixer about knocks me out...

Alcohol Content: 9.6 % by volume Finishing Hops: Cascade
Beginning Gravity: 23 Plato Dry Hops: Centennial & Cascade
Ending Gravity: 6.0 Plato Malts: Two-row Barley Malt,
Yeast: Top Fermenting Ale Yeast Caramel Malt, Dextrin Malt
Bittering Hops: Nugget

definately a good move dood, beer brewing is a fine art, just get it down pat first, then you can start making some crazy stuff like chilli beer, pot beer, etc...

although a word of warning, the long you leave it the better...

I have to concour with everyone who has given coopers pale the thumbs up, it is definately the finest beer australia has to offer... it's the only beer that I've seen with a BEST AFTER date, rather than a BEST BEFORE...

as far as the best beer in the world, it's a tie for me, but for different reasons... the tie is between:

My uncle's own special beers (bitter, pilsner, larger, etc) are so tasty that it's hard not to drink them in about 30 secs...

And...

Belgian Monk beer... very nice beer with full sediment and so forth... I've only ever had it once, and it was like heaven came down and gave me enlightenment

Rascuache: There's a Belgian white beer called "St Cloud's" that was served in one or two pubs in Brisbane for a while. It's brewed like any other white beer but has coriander and orange added to it, which gives it a different texture and a bit of a tang. The bubbles are extremely fine and it feels like you're drinking air. I'm not sure who makes it, as I forgot the name of the brewery.

I also tried "Bitburger" last night, which is a german beer. A friend of mine told me it was crap and that there was another brewery who made a better version of that beer. Bitburger ended up being pretty good and I'll have to ask him what the name was so I can find it again (I've only found it sold in one bottle shop on the westside in Brisbane).

Hoegaarden is great as well, I've probably mentioned it a million times. I first had it at The Oaks Hotel when I was in Sydney in February, and at $12 a glass, it's worth it. Tasty, lots of it, and a real treat. It's also sold in bottles in a bar up here, so I'll have to frequent it.

Thanks to imp for introducing me to Amber Ale and Hoegaarden.

I think you'll be bitterly (pardon the pun) disappointed in European beers - I was quite happy to get back to Australian beers. I must admit the lack of bubbles in the European lagers was quite hard to get used to when I started drinking Australian beers again and I still suffer from the odd burpies and hic-ups after a few bevvies.

A hint for Stella drinkers - if it's on tap it's brewed here but if it's bottled it's brewed overseas and way past its expiry date by the time it's sold. It also gives you hellish hangovers....but not as bad as Grolsch.....:grr:

geggle
19-10-2003, 07:57 PM
It's probably not the expiry date per se, but that the beer has probably been poorly stored and handled in transit that causes it to be so bad.

When you get a real fresh Pilsner Urquell, the flavour and hop aroma is truly something ain't it?

I do agree that bottled beer does go off (like any product) and that some bottle-shops/pubs will sell you out-of-date product - I remember a particularly vile Lebatts which was two years out of date...

I also think that most of the imported bottled beers you see at your local bottleshop/pub have probably been mishandled at some point in the distribution chain. This is usually one of: Excessive heat
Long exposure to light (even florescent lighting is a problem here)

I can't remeber if I posted in this thread so in case I didn't.

I'm not one for fancy boutique beer especially any beer with fruit put into it. That just doesn't seem right to me.

Carlton Cold is my favourite beer and it is all buy in cases to drink.

When out or at one of the work umm meetings I will happily drink pretty much any full strength beer. I would prefer to drink cats piss than any form of light or mid strength beer.

Boag beer is a fav same a Toohey New, XXXX Bitter also Crown Larger if that is all there is.

I refuse to drink any tap poured beer unless I know the cellerman, as some of the pipes I have seen... yuck.

As for the home brews the Coopers Range is very nice but again if it is free/full strength i'll drink it. If it tastes like crap i'll drink at least three of them. I have never yet drank any beer that after 4 still tastes bad hehe.

I would never put myself through drinking bad beer just so I can't taste them after four. Why voluntarily do something if it's not enjoyable? I do seem to have an unorthodox taste for alcoholic drinks though. For some reason, none of my friends like Ouzo, or Guinness, Carbine Stout or Jagermeister (I know that this is popular amongst others). While some of them will drink harder spirits (Chartreuse) simply because "OMG IT'S 148% ALCOHOL!!", I enjoy them for their strange taste.

This is my first post here since returning from Munich and the Oktoberfest. Man, do those German's know how to make beer - especially wheat beer, which is one of my favourites. Everyone shouild try to get to Oktoberfest at least once in their lifetime. Oh, and the Bavarians have beer-making rules dating back to the 1500s that the breweries still have to comply with, wehich means they make probably the purest beers in the world. And I kid you not, they are really among the freshest and tastiest I've ever tried.

Utop, Hoegaarden is also popular here in London and a lot of pubs have it on tap. Tho it's not quite as expensive as it is over there!

Something else I love here in the UK are the real ales - haven't been out in the country to try the beer at a small village yet (most village pubs brew their own) but some ot the ales you can get here in London are superb.

SOC if you liked the pure beers at Oktoberfest I went to a great brewery in Salzburg Austria where the monks brew the own beer as they did in the 1500s. The hostel I stayed was great also, if you brought back a 1 litre stein they'd fill it for $5 (it converted to $5 in those days anyway). Don't have the details on hand but if you're interested PM me and I'll dig out the details.

Oh, and Greece, we also have to get to Greece. But they don't do beer there, I belive, just retsina.

Which reminds me, while in Barcelona we bought a 375ml bottle of Absynthe for about 6euro (around $12 I think) to try it out ... man, this stuff is STONG - it was 140 proof (70% alcohol) and burned on the way town ... very strong aniseed taste, too.

While in Perth, we took a sightseeing day trip to Fremantle. After a tour through the Fremantle Gaol, we cruised on over to the Sail & Anchor micro-brewery (the original home of Redback beer) to sample some of their fine wares.

All their beers were tasty, but their Iron Brew was amazing. It's a high potency (7%+) low fizz dark beer which they serve just cool, not cold. Yum!

After a few of those, we staggered on down to Little Creatures micro-brewery for more nice beery product.

Great, now I have to dig out the stuff! he he just kidding. Salzburg is great. You MUST get to Greece, but don't go to the bigger islands (they're full of package holidaying POMS). Well, the pub was originally called the Freemasons and was a dive - basically the pub where the 100-year-old drunks and winos hung out. In the 80s it was bought by a brewer who was working for Alan Bond's Swan Brewery (can't remember his name) and he and his architect partner renovated it turned it into a pub brewery - the first in Australia, and the pub that started the craze. I did a few stories on this for the newspaper I was working for at the time. I've also spent many, many happy nights there drinking Redback (I was among the first people in Australia to try that beer) and Dogbolter (what Iron Brew used to be called when it was good and was closer to 14% alcohol) ...

What they now call Dogbolter is not the original Dogbolter. When they first made it, dogbolter was a stout and was usually 12%-14% alcohol. They also made a beer called a Dark Lager. When CUB bought out the company (and ruined all the recipes) they renamed the Dark lager as Dogbolter so they could bottle it, and made a weaker stout (Iron Brew) at 7% ... they also weakened Redback, which is a shame cos it used to be my favourite beer.

yes, all malt, its sapporo's premium pilsner.

This Dortmunder-style lager from the Japanese Sapporo brewery proudly proclaims its 'all malt' credentials, differentiating it from its many competitor beers brewed with rice. The review bottle was bought in a Japanese restaurant in Oxford, whose owner goes to some effort to import it. It pours into a light, bubbly head. On the nose are malt, honey and grass, along with a little sharp acidity. There is just the faintest hint of beeswax or rubber. In the mouth it is very dry, clean and bitter, though without the hoppy hit of a saazy pilsner - the hops are Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Hersbruck. The surprising taste is one of oysters; salty and so smooth as to feel slippery. Obviously the Japanese eat plenty of seafood, and this would appear to complement it well. The finish is lightly acidic, perhaps with some lemon, leading to a light honey-malt bitter aftertaste. An extremely pleasant and refreshing, complex lager - a treat.
