for fucks sake.

first came the newsweek report that interrogators at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba had desecrated the koran.

then followed a wave of anti-u.s. riots (http://www.boston.com/news/world/middleeast/articles/2005/05/15/karzai_wants_defiling_of_koran_punished/) across the middle east that have resulted in at least a dozen deaths.

now newsweek says.... "oops."

WASHINGTON - Newsweek magazine on Sunday said it may have erred in a May 9 report that said U.S. interrogators desecrated the Koran at Guantanamo Bay, and apologized to victims of deadly violence sparked by the article.

The weekly news magazine said in its May 23 edition that the original source of the allegation was not sure where he saw the assertion that at least one copy of the Koran was flushed down a toilet in an attempt to get detainees to talk.

"We regret that we got any part of our story wrong, and extend our sympathies to victims of the violence and to the U.S. soldiers caught in its midst," Editor Mark Whitaker wrote in the magazine's latest issue, due to appear on U.S. newsstands on Monday.

- Reuters (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/15/AR2005051500493.html)

now i am no fan of the war forum but holy shit, how much more fucked up can you get than this?

first we open a rather illegal concentration camp and put people there in violation of every right they are guarunteed by the constitution of the country.

then we treat them in ways that cause every credible humanitarian agency to castigate us for abuses AND we go through a horrific abuse scandal in iraq. (making such allegations credible by extension)

and then our dumbfuck media rush to publish a story with UNNAMED SOURCES (did we learn nothing from Jayson Blair?) that turns out MAY NOT HAVE BEEN EXACTLY CORRECT!?!!

jesus fucking christ.

The media just have to realize they have a huge responsibilty to report the TRUTH else they just become part of the tabloits. When they report half-truth, there's always nutcases out there that needed the least justification to cause trouble.

I hope people start to boycott Newsweek now.

I also like how they can burn the American flag all they want, but as soon as someone messes with the Koran they get pissed off, same for you.

But if it was the bible being flushed you would have put it on the front page being a good thing, but of course nothing the US does is good.

Kleph says it best, so I'll just quote him:

"Please go fuck yourself with a riding lawn mower you cum slurping shithead."

Noddy you truly need to go to Iraq and show those Muslims how they do it in the good ole U S of A.

please go fuck yourself with a riding lawn mower you cum slurping shithead. Thirded

I really hope someone sues Newsweek for a tonne. Printing stuff like this (koran, desecration, infidels) without checking the facts is reckless.

Common sense tells us that "The Truth" is the exact opposite of anything noddy says.

Most likely the story is true, but they have retracted it because of a) pressure from US Govt
b) they don't like to be teh cause of riots/deaths

from a place that piles up prisoners into naked human pyramids and makes them do other fucked up shit, this sounds completely true to me.

*usual ill-informed ranting*

Thought i'd edit that to spare you, kleph.

In any case, Noddy:

Koran = Religious holy symbol.

American Flag = Secular representation of a nation.

Unless you are advocating turning America into a theocracy? (not a big step)

I dont think Nodbugger is that much of a fag to make a 2nd, nor third account. But that is one good fuck of an impersonation, I like it.

Welcome to ZGeek you block of penis cheese. If you piss me off though I'm getting in the same boat as the other 2 and going to -rep the shit out of you so you get bad ratings and cant access the pr0n forum.

Maybe for you, but some people can feel the same sense of sanctity twards a flag as they could tward a holy book. When it comes down to it they are both symbols and for you to say that there's a big differerance between what those symbols mean is simply ignorant because the meaning of a symbol can vary depending on an individuals opinion.

I'll go along with that, but then it's the old adage about two wrongs not making rights.

Noddy uses it all the time, e.g. "They chopped people's heads off, all we did is shove things up their arses."

In my opinion it would be fair enough if they were actually shoving things up the arses of the beheaders, handgrenades would be a good idea, however it's more likely that they're just inciting hatred.

Burning flags incites hatred, desecrating Korans (if true) incites hatred, flying planes into buildings does and so does dropping bombs on people, beheading or sodomizing them.

That seems pretty obvious to me, don't ask me for the science though.

I blame the middle-eastern news services for using Newsweek as their source in the first place.

Perhaps they should get a beauty pageant over there or something to brighten things up. :tits:

Yeah, both sides of the american media took it right up thier willing arse cheeks when this unsanctified invasion began. NONE of them stood up to the administration on this issue initially. Its fucking sad that living in a democracy a media can feel so threatened and subservient to an administration that they forget that thier fucking job description is to serve the people, to check the facts (right or wrong).
But as soon as Michael Moore comes along these clowns have the nerve to bitch about his facts and figures, and the ethical issues involved in his filmmaking, while unanimously they stood by thier governments illegal redneck agenda.
And on a side note id like to bitch about the aussie media who treated the MASSIVE No War demonstrations like they were nothing. As usual the news footage just showed the most unusual looking protestors acting agitated (stoned crazy guys with dreadlocks) when the reality that much of middle australia took to the streets on those marches. White collar, blue collar, young and old all took part. I wish our generation had the conviction of the babyboomers of old who KEPT FUCKING MARCHING during the Vietnam war and actually made a massive differance.

Why blame the entire U.S. media for the fuckups of a handful of staff at one magazine?

oh, I know... for the same reason we blame the whole U.S. military for the actions of a few thug soldiers...

Stupidity.

I think I finally found your primary news source (http://www.nsgtmo.navy.mil/Gazette%20Online%20Ed.htm) for information on this.
