I had an exciting thought which may baffle you as to why it hasn't been thought before. I notice an abundance of News items going through at certain times of the day and then none for the rest... this is usualy when the mandatory "Comon guys post more news" item pops up.

How about the zgeek team spread out the news articles or only submit the important ones, as apposed to "I just found a pube in my keyboard" which is amusing, don't get me wrong, but it really doesn't lend the word "respectable" to this site or promote growth, it mearly caters for your current audience who know the submitter. Anyway, if all articles aren't submitted at once it would dispell any NO NEWS problems.

I find it an annoyance often that so much news is being submitted i really don't give a flying fuck and couldn't be bothered reading them. But when a slight few are submitted I take the time to read through them and wait eagerly for next time. Keep your audience hungry.
I enjoy reading the Comments of each article and i like to come back and read a response to the reply i have submitted...although it's difficult when it's off the page and i rarely care enough to click on Archive.

Thoughts? etc?

For those who don't care - here's a girl in swimwear.

Respectability?
You don't want news you don't give a fuck about?

You don't quite get the whole ZGeek thing do you?

It's probably a bit hard on the news approvers. Mostly they are approving news around their actual paid work, and so can't set aside regular times for approving the news.

The other issue is that people get anxious to see their name up in lights and bug whichever news approvers happen to be around to go and approve their news item.

I'm quite sure zgeek wants "Respect". Quit your little bitchy rampage and have a discussion. You can be an idiot and still have people respect, use your head buddy.

Their waiting keeps zgeek on the mind. If their article doesn't get submitted, then it makes it all the more special next time one does.

Actually, I do believe that the news page was for people who wanted a laugh mostly, with the occasional important news updates, etc. I'm sure you can gain respect whilst still having the occasional pube in your keyboard joke. ;) I mean, you respect them, don't you? Although, personally I don't think respect is their main objective here. To entertain, more like. Come on, it's not really a full on serious news feed. It reflects the people who post for it and that is, geeks with a sense of humour but still care somewhat about the world. Now this opinion is generalised, and I'm not going to speak for everyone but I think YOU are the one who should pull your head in a stop being a whingey prick.

Its unfortunate that someone who posts a suggestion to a 'percieved' problem, gets attacked and -repped. Doesn't really encourage others to post suggestions/ideas in the future.

Personally, I dont particulary agree with him, but +rep for making the effort to suggest a solution rather than the usual complain about a problem.

I'm pretty sure i never said anything about wanting the news to be serious and i'm quite sure i was just offering some suggestions...which makes you a whinging prick hypocrite. Your bad.

I guess the main problem all of you -reppers can't seem to grasp is how i use the word respect. Have a think and get back to me. I guess i don't repect toilet humour, but each to their own.

Either cry to yourself or counter what i said without name-calling. Settle down, i know most of you are super fans of zgeek, but i'm only trying to make it better. Don't cry like i just fucked ur sister.

Its a good suggestion but it would be pretty difficult to implement it.
Because of the randomness of the submissions you cant garauntee there will be any there to post to the front page when the next set posting time came. Or you might get a heap at once which would lead to the next problem.

The posts on the front page appear in the same order as they get submitted so if you have alot of them and post some now and the more later there is a chance that a story that has been at the top of the front page for the last 2 hours will still be at the top and the just posted stuff will be right down the bottom hidden amongst stuff you have already read so you might not even notice it.

That and the fact that the news mods are fairly evenly spread across the main timezones and since they are all incredibly imporant and sexy and popular, cannot promise to be at the computer at any one particular time we find its better to make hay while the sun shines and post as much as we can while its there in case no one else can do it later..

Just read that back to myself and its a bit convoluted though it makes sense in my head, so I'll just summarise it for you.
Newsmod = sexy.
There, that should be clear as mud.

If you fucked my sister, YOU'RE the one who'd be crying, cos her husband would beat the crap out of you. And he's bigger than you, so nyah nyah. :D

(to djg)

Listen buddy, I'm going to slow things down a little. What you got above: all feedback. Nobody's crying... except maybe you in that last post.

Okay, so about respect - what we're saying is: ZGeek is about being ZGeek, and it's good if the people it's aimed at respect it, but not good to change things to attract respect from people who aren't ZGeekers at the expense of changing the nature of the site... There's always been toilet humour and crap like that. I'm not into it, but I know it's a part of ZGeek. This isnt' news.com.au.

We're not saying your suggestions are bad (I wasn't, just had a laugh at the idea of ZG being respectable! haha) or unwelcome.

Serpent Girl is not a whinging prick hypocrite, and how about you try and discuss your own thread without name calling, just like you want other people to do... geez, I don't know if I'm coming across harsh, actually I just laugh when people have their little hissy fits and I'm trying to keep things mellow here.

I think all SG was trying to say (and I'm sure she'll correct me if I'm wrong), was there's nothing wrong with the front page - those sorts of stories are what ZG is about.

And in the end dwarfthrower's right... even if it would be nice to space out the "releases" of articles (not saying it's a bad idea), nobody does ZG as a fulltime job, it's good enough that people do the admin work and put things on the front page, without asking them to time the releases... if anything, what we need is more submissions at different times of the day, especially as we have admins from all over the world to put the articles up as they are received.

Keep the feedback coming, don't be upset if you receive comments which don't agree with the suggestions, don't take things too seriously... mate, just relax. Please. It's Friday.

That's right, sorry if I came across differently. I only was rude at the end in reply to one of your previous posts, which I thought was a bit out of hand. They're right, don't take things too seriously. You're just setting yourself up for dissapointment.

You're right about all the important news/serious news/toilet or sexual humour being spaced out, it would be a good thing, since news comes so fast sometimes you miss things you wanted to know. All I am saying is that I don't think that the nature of the posts should be changed, that's all. Some of us (like - the people who posted it) find it somewhat amusing and like it, okay?

They all have a point. This site can't cater for everyones' needs. Some nolifers would check the site every 3 seconds, some will check it daily, some weekly. But if possibly, maybe implementing some personalization, where someone can filter the type of news they see in the main page. For example, Nodbugger can choose only to see news with "war" tag. Might not be straightforward, but i'm sure we should strive to improve. As John Sunol puts it, "......"

Also there is an option in your user settings to have an email or instant notification sent to you everytime someone replys in a thread you have posted in (or just subscribed to) so you wont have to go looking for threads you are participating in.

I'd like to post the news in a nice order and spaced out, but as its been said. I've got a real job to do to. So news posts mostly happen before work, lunch, little lunch, middle lunch, eleveness and at home. The same with the other mods.

The only way to change this is for someone to pay me to run zgeek full time which I'm totally hoping will happen... oh where are you my shining knight?... that sounded gayer than I intended it to be. But until then, it keeps going the way it has.

As for the potty humour. I live for that shit. I love you all. Except for icarus.
