Good Evening everyone,

I am about to purchase a .com domain from www.korgsit.com, and I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. I plan to host a website on the
webspace allocated to me by my ADSL ISP Schaelec. How does one direct the domain
name to the hosted pages?

Alternatively, if my ISP does not allow this, what alternative suggestions would you have?

Regards,

Justin

i suggest you use 1337.as (http://www.1337.as/) as your hosting service. they are the fine folks that keep zgeek chirping along and their customer service is tops. you can get answers to this type of question almost immdiately through direct contact or using their forums.

Basically just buying a domain name isn't enough. You need a dns server somewhere to take control of that domain name, you need to have that set up before you are allowed to buy any domains. Couple of options for that:
a) the people you are buying the domain through can host it for you (will cost you money)
b) you can set up a dns server yourself (if you are asking these questions I don't advise this)
c) get your adsl provider to host it (going to cost you money)
d) get somebody else to host it for you (will cost you money)

Basically the dns servers address is set up in the global dns servers so that when somebody looks up www.example.com:

the browser goes to the .com server and asks about example.com,

the .com server gives out the address of the example.com server,

the browser goes to example.com dns server and asks about www.example.com,

example.com server hands back the dns address of your web server (adsl providers),

the browser connects to your web server and aks for the home page

you see pretty pictures and shit.

??? profit ???

That is how it works in a nutshell

would the URL forwarding service offered by Planet Domain suffice?

If au has a company ukreg.com for forwarding other domains to other domains i.e. http://www.company1.com to http://isp.com/freespace/username/, ukreg's forwarding services are free, however the IPStag has to under there's (freehosts(??)) but if you register the domain under them it's mega cheap and you dont have to worry about IPStags.

Most hosting companies will offer a free direct forwarding service any way for there domains. (usually with in a control panel)

Just email them and ask.

Seriously Uther, WTF, that made no sense.

and kleph, i would class that as spam, as it wasnt any help what so ever to the question asked and it looks bad for the crew at 1337.as
