G'Day all.

I have always hated when people ask me what I am going to be when I grow up.

So, I have thought about a few options and have decided that I would like to be an architect. I have always gone to people's houses and thought about how something could have been designed better and so forth.

So, not being in yr 10 and therefore not doing Careers classes yet, I was wondering if either:

A. There are architects, or architecture students here on Zgeek.

Or

B. If anyone has information on what it is required to follow such career.

Thanks all.

Oi mate i wanted to do architecture at qut this year but my op wasn't good enough, I think there is a university in Victoria that specialises but i spose thats only good if you live in victoria. But if you plan on going to Queensland University of technology you need an op 7 and 4SA of english.

EDIT: I'd also advise doing some tech drawing subjects at school or playing around with AutoCAD at home.

davo u fool u dont want to do that, you spend so much time and effort making skate board ramps and such, so well, look at that sort of thing, pay attention to drew or nesbit in woodwork

You need pretty high marks to study Architecture any where, but the good architecture schools are phenomenally hard to get into.

But for that, take graphics, maths, physics - those sort of subjects. If it doesn't look like you're tracking well enough to secure an Architecture course right off, have a look into industrial design or drafting or the like as a bridging course.

Study Finance or Law.

All other career choices will lead to regret later when its too late and you figure out that this annoying subset of nerds have all the power and get all the hot chicks.

Friendly advice is all. Take it or leave it. You have been warned. (posted by edeity)

You also can make it in either field without taking study very seriously, you just have to love money and not mind being a bastard.

Not having a go at you personally, but this post was the last straw, so I'm going to vent my frustration on you. The majority of lawyers DO NOT MAKE LOTS OF MONEY. This isn't The Practice or whatever, people, this is real life. My old lady's a lawyer, and does heaps of pro-bono shit in Ringwood (Melbourne). None of her contemporaries whom I have met (and I've met a few, from various practices she's been at) are phenomonally rich. Some partners or whatever are rich but they're a minority.

Second of all, not all lawyers are greedy dollar chasers. Have you ever heard of pro-bono work, or family law and such? Most lawyers aim to represent their clients to see justice goes through its course to its final conclusion and to the benefit of society.

I realise that most of the shit you guys say is in jest, but it pisses me off. So STFU bout lawyers.

Everyone knows engineers pull all the hot chicks.

The only way an engineer can pull a hot chick is if they sneak into a business lecture and perv on the chicks there.

I don't know where you're from, but in Victoria, the ENTER you needed to get into law at Melbourne Uni last year was 99.4 (top score possible being 99.95). Basically, it's extremely hard to get into, so the one thing you would need to do would be to take study very seriously.

Well go ahead, clue me in, I'd love to hear an opinion from your evidently informed view point. I mean, if you're gonna make a comment like that, back it up when challenged - it's not like it's just a passing observation, it's denegrating an entire industry. From your comment though, I'm guessing that you don't know anything about said industry and therefore would have no way of clueing me in, but I'd like to be proven wrong on that one.

As I currently work in finance and law i both admire money and don't mind being a bitch. I have heard of family law and community legal centres where i worked before this year so....fitty please forgive my denegrating observation. I have been enlightened by your chastising comment.

Being an engineer, I can tell you that there are only two hot chick available for engineers and they were bloody hard to find (we had to 'interview' heaps before they were found). Colonel Kurtz took one of them off the market a few years ago, the other said yes to me about 8 months ago.
Sorry, really I am.

BTW Fitty, I know what you mean, my better half is a lawyer and we aint rolling in it (although the speeding fines got while chasing ambulances may be part of the reason)

if you are interested in archetecture because you like designing things that's one thing. but if you actually like building things you may want to look into civil engineering. pretty much everyone in my family has followed this career and love it.

my brother and my father specialize in heavy construction. they figure out how to build all those gigantic things that make life possible. like roads and bridges.

it pays well and there is a demand for skilled workers. and, given the growth rates in western countries, it is a career that will be in demand for some time to come.

Ooooh, thread hijacking.

Heh.

Seriously though if you are interested in architecture and want to do it don't be put off by the high requirements. There will always be a back door and the HSC et al become irrelevant in time.

Yep. Those Family Law Specialists are the fuckers that bled me dry.

Do you know the rate by which they charge?

And on TOP of that they THEN charge for photocopying, stamps, etc. On TOP.

I'm sorry, but if $240 an hour doesn't cover the cost of your stationary then you're doing something wrong. Or you're fucking greedy.

I will note that there are indeed generous people within the profession with both their time and their knowledge. But they are few and far between.

I'm guessing you hit the mother-lode and hit a rich vein of poor but well intentioned people with law degrees. If there is such a community of them in Newcastle then I'd love to get directions to find the place.

I especially like being charged per page for sending local faxes by my lawyer. WTF? It costs you 20c for the entire fax, where do you get off charging me 50c per page?

Costs (http://www.familycourt.gov.au/presence/connect/www/home/forms_fees/court_costs/)

Reading documents: $7.25* per 100 words

Scanning of documents (where reading is not necessary): $2.90 per 100 words

Edit: Gone up from $6.60 per 100 words since I made this (http://forums.zgeek.com/showthread.php?t=26279) post.
