Are we going to set a minimum time for the exposure? Is anything 1 second or over considered long?
This is going to be one of the best comps ever, I reckon, we are going to see some fantastic shots.

yep i too think we need a minimum time

120 seconds would be a good limit.

This is one I took with a 60 second exposure early in the morning. (just to give an idea of what 60 seconds is like)

All I can get is 30 sec... unless you have a serious $$ digital much higher is unlikely. Maybe 10 as the min. time exposure then? To open it up? (no pun intended)

I am going to with 2 seconds as the min time, to allow as many entries as possible. Many point and shoot cameras have 2 seconds as their slowest shutter speed.

I think we should try and go for *long* exposures though. The image needs to show evidence of a long eposure, ie movement etc.

I agree, should see some excellent entries this month.

(last months entries will be out soon, I promise)

:)

Those of you with min shutter speeds of 10/15/30 seconds etc, do you have a bulb mode?

10 seconds is long enough to get a decent exposure.

I just went out and had a play with some night shots. 30 seconds is my longest apart from bulb, so I'll need to find the remote release control :)

I've got only 15 seconds from memory.
Will have to get cracking on this during the week. Pity my tripod is fux0red :\

Do you have self timer? If so, just set it to bulb mode, with timer on. Then use a velcrove strap with a piece of rubber over the shutter. Set up the shot, lock in the rubber/ velcrove, and stand clear before the shutter opens. To finish, cover the lens with a black cloth and release the velcrove.

Or just buy a remote!

(I used the above method once - it worked, but was a real hassle of course)

:)

Yeah i agree with a 1 or 2 second minimum. Firstly it allows more people to enter and secondly 2 seconds can be a long exposure in some situations. (Race cars for example?)

Although I would like to see some ridiculously long exposures....

Remote is on order... nobody seems to carry it in stock :(

I hope it gets here in time, otherwise I might have to use the method you suggested.

I am hoping this also. Lets hope people experiment with the bulb setting!

I guess us point and click camera owners are boned :( Time to upgrade me thinks. Can I borrow a few K off someone?
Why? The last few digi-compacts I've owned all had manual functions, and you can pick up a Pentax *ist for $1k or less these days.

Makes my $5k of Nikon gear scary!

Long exposure can get you arrested! or at least nasty frost-bite in the winter :D

I'm thinking of getting one of these (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/) I wish I was in America though... $700 cheaper there :(
I've got one, it's great :)

Just remember that you will want to buy more lenses for it - the 18-55mm won't be enough.

Yeah I've noticed most camera gear is twice the price here. Double the USD price to get the price in Australia..

Well since i have a scanner, and some film left, I'm entering using my 70's baby film camera. It has a sensor so it leaves the shutter open as long as it needs to. I can make it go for at least a minute at night if i use a small apature.

Zoomless camera though :( Makes composition a bit harder

I see a rule has been added after I submitted my photo titled "Long Exposure to the Sun". Would my picture of me in a raincoat flashing someone in a park and titled "2 Second Exposure" qualify?

Wikkid, well suddenly the fact that I have a film SLR seems advantageous :). Been looking to enter this comp for a while. And I think I've got a perfect idea for a shot too...

I'm another without a camera that takes long exposure shots so that's one less long exposure shot of running water or lights to choose between.

somebody do a long exposure picture of the south celestial pole. You wind up with those really cool star trail pictures

Waiting for the folder (July 2005) to be created in the gallery (I cant do that) so I can upload. Pirate will get to it soon, I'm sure.

Several hiccups have occurred this week. My humblest apologies. I wont be this late next time.
