My new powerbook just got really sick, locking up like buggery. Dunno why, but since physically removing every component of NAV by hand, it appears to be okay. Any ideas why? I've had it for a couple of months and was no trouble til this morning.

From my experience, no AV software works on Mac. Ever. Every piece of AV software I've tried has caused problems and made the machine not work properly.
If it's OS10, best advice is to not use AV at all. Maybe have it installed at most and occasionally do updates (every few months), but don't leave autoprotect running. Shut it down as much as possible except for when you actually want to use it. Hell, there's no viruses out there for OS10 except for proof of concept ones. Nothing in the wild.
As for the cause as per your initial query, file corruption still happens a lot on MacOS. Everyone was talking up how it would no longer be an issue wiht OS10, but it is. Preferences and whatnot get corrupt all the time. At least defragging is no longer something needed on a weekly/daily basis. I see the problem you've had here and I don't think it anything more than this.

also just found out that mcaffee's virex, the program supplied by apple with the .mac subscription, is also incompatible with 10.4. clever apple, very clever.
