Call back times

How long do you wait till you call back a prospective employer for the fun "is the position closed?" question.

Then..... how long do you wait till sending the "thanks" card and request to hold on to resume for future jobs? (boxes of poop don't count)

i try an mail the "thanks" card the day i have the interview. it takes three days to go through the post and that means they should get it as they make the decision. the faster it gets there the better the impression.

also, if they chose someone else and something falls through, that letter - and its punctuality - may be just the thing that sticks in the mind of the recruiter when they are scrambling to take care of it.
