I'm thinking about going for a job that's perfect for me. I'll be doing what I like while being surrounded by people just like me.
The only problem is that it'll be a fair drop in pay compared to what I'm getting now (around 10%).
Have you ever taken a paycut to do a job you really wanted?

I've moved for zero gain - which ended up only costing me payrises rather than being an actual cut - so not really in the same league.
I say look at your lifestyle, if you can still do all the things you want to do on the new amount then go for it. If you can't then you'd have to weigh up whether the things you'd be missing out on are worth the headache of working somewhere you really don't want to be.

Yes, and I was much happier, and I've since progressed and I'm earning more that I was prior to this change and would be earning now if I'd have stayed.
It's only money, can't remember when I heard this, but try this, look in the mirror before you leave for work every morning this week and ask yourself, is what I'm about to do what I really want to do with my day, at the end of the week add up the "Yes" and "No" answers if "Yes" wins then stay, if it's the way of the "No" quit and try something else (unless of course you think that this ratio will change soon or you enjoy doing stuff you don't like because your a sadist)

Apply for the job anyway. If you change your mind between now and any job-offer you can just say you're not in a position to accept anymore.

a) If you enjoy the new job more your performance will possibly improve and therefore prospects will look up
b) Less pay = less tax, ....OK im struggling for a b
I say go for it.

Money is hollow reward for enduring something you don't enjoy.

Unless it's either a lot of Money, or it's not THAT unenjoyable.

Thanks guys.
I've decided I will be applying for it. I've got a fair bit of 'give' in my take home pay and Like Benwah said "it's only money."
I'm sure my happiness level would more than make up for it anyway.

Oh, there's also the added thrill that my old job is now paying me to apply for a new job. With the boss' blessing of course.

with new tax cuts and rising income bands 10% will reduce to pretty minimal after tax in your hand each fortnight.
So if you enjoy the job a lot more and perform better because of it, there is always the chance that your added performance will be paid back to you come bonus time.
I haven't take a pay cut but I plan to in the near(ish) future. I'm talking major cut. Like 15-20 grand.

I took a fair sized cut when shifting back from doing Project Management in the UK. In Brissy all the PM jobs I applied for I was competing against guys who had 10 - 15 years experience, whereas I only had 12 months experience. So I went back to Sys Admin work. Different payrates between London and Brisbane, and then the difference between PM wage and a Sysadmin wage...but since then (almost 4 years ago) I just worked it out and I am now earning 22.5% more than when I started. Bonuses not included..

OK here's an update:
I submitted the resume and then got a short quiz/test back that I had to fill out.
I did that and sent it back to them but didn't hear anything back for a while. I chalked it up to not getting the job, however a couple of weeks later they contacted me with an email that basically said "So are you going to give us the test back or what?"
They hadn't got the return email.
I've resubmitted it (and checked they received it) and am now waiting for the HR dude to get back from holiday.

Don't forget to try and negotiate the pay rate - you may be able to push it back up by 10%

Nice work Blueboy. However, I would advise you never to take a pay cut, unless you're in a tough spot. Basically I did that a few years ago, and it set the tone. It took me two years to get back to what I was earning, and I really felt the company knew they could take advantage of me.
Of course, I recently turned down a 100% pay rise, and am about to take a 100% pay cut so it possible that you shouldn't listen to my advice :O
Ps. Don't forget to wear a silk tie. Polyester sux0rs

Don't worry, it's a paycut I can afford.
I really want the job as well.

so you're going to work on one of those gay reviews?
I work as little as possible for as much as possible. I highly recommend it. The less I work the better. In your case I'd say go for the other job if you will enjoy it more, just make sure it isn't one of those grass is greener maggigoes cause that'd suck.

Thank you for participating in the [insert company here] interview on the 30 of August 2005.
After reviewing your application and test results, we regret to inform you
that your application for this position has not been successful on this
occasion.
Yeah, that was well worth waiting for.
