Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone else here is employed, or have even been employeed for a good amount time, at a corporate retail chain? How'd you like it?

I myself have been with best buy since as soon as I could find a decent job, when I turned 16, being about two years ago now. I really like my job, I have fun at work, but now that I'm going into college I'm starting to think about how a real job is going to be right around the cornor, and wonder what kind of jobs I can find while still in college. Anyone go through a transition similar to this?

I worked at Blockbuster for a year and a half while at Uni, was a good job cause I got free vids and did plenty of this :weed:

As you are in the States, I'm guessing that you will go away for college and can't stay in the same job... But a similar job close to college will enable a bit of extra spending cash.

As for finding a "proper job" - keep an eye out for summer internships, or, a day a week or something in an office as will help getting a job at the end of college a lot easier if you've got a bit of relevent experience.

I worked for Angus & Robertson for a year. I quite liked it too. It was a bit too easy, often little to be done, so bordom was a factor. I think I would have loved it had I been a bit higher up, more responsablitys, more to do. I also got books cheaper than normal, only by 10%, but I love books, so it was great for me and my family. :D

I work at Safeway (Woolworth's) and moonlight as a caterer, where I get payed double what I do at Safeway. I certainly don't love my job. I don't mind boredom so long as I don't have to be doing anything, but the job I do is just monotonous and robotic. I can't wait to get out of the friggin thing.

Dunno what it's like in the states, but from what I hear, call centres are the way to go for easy work that pays ok. If you're going into retail, you should try to find a small place like Blockbuster or something that's not going to be busy all the time. The best formula is finding a 1:1 of effort:money

I have worked for 2 different woolworths bottle shops. BWS and Dan Murphys.

It was not a bad job while i was casual, but when I went full time, it made me ever so stabby. I was lifting 1000 cases of beer and wine a day, working 38 hours a week, and taking home $400 a week for my trouble. Not happy.

i've worked the past 5 years (this coming october) at London Fog, a jacket store company. Although it's an awfully boring job, it's steady and i can't get fired. There are numerous things i've done that could've gotten me fired....where do i begin?...me and my friend (who i got hired there) play H.O.R.S.E. with a mini basketball we bought and throw em up at the rafters (need i remind you we get really bored...especially in the summertime) we've smoked there...hell even sold some to my boss one time. i would constantly come in with the wrong attire on...and have had secret store visits by management that i wouldn't know. still workin there though. all in all i'm a good employee and help customers (when we actually have any, we only made $600 yesterday!) even though i still work there i've done things in terms of leading to what i want to do with the rest of my life. I attended a community college for 3 years while deciding where i wanted to go. in that time i've made connections, worked on an independent film as an internship and actually being a camera op, and i've worked as a production assistant for a major production company hired to make a dvd for a cook book. good pay and great experience. all the while i'm building up my resume for future employment. internships are the way to go.

I worked for pizza slut as a driver while I was at university.

pretty cruisy job but it gets really boring and you have to work to midnight a lot. pay is reasonably rubbish and you end up doing a lot of damage to your car in wear and tear.

You get to know the streets around the place really fucking well. Oh yeah and make sure you all tip your pizza delivery person if they are on time, word gets around if you tip well and drivers who have worked there a while will put in a bit of extra effort to get the pizza there nice and warm.

there was one guy I worked with named victor who was like a walking street directory. Once I picked up an order and he looked at the docket and said to me

"oh thats the brown house about 2/3 the way along blah blah street, look out for the yellow flowering bush in the front, oh and they usually have kids toys all over the footpath and no light so watch out"

And he could pull this trick off for heaps and heaps of places and he was always right

I worked for Coles supermarkets for 5 years, I fucking hated it. I was a deli chick, which is regarded by many as the worst position to have in the store. Managers were assholes, customers are fucking retards and you never had enough time to get everything done. I made friends there, which made the job more bearable, but I was pretty happy to leave it at the end.

You get crappy arse pay and get treated like shit ,people abuse for things the chef has done wrong and my boss was christian and had some sort of mental disorder so one minute she was calling me sweetie , the next she was yelling at me for something I hadnt even done lol. So I quit. :D

I've worked at Big W for 3.5 years. It's fairly easy work except around Christmas, and the people there are great. In fact it would be the perfect job except for customers that are morons.

Currently I'm kicking around for cash at Target. Not the greatest job out there I know, but it pays for my new computer.

Delivering pizza for a gourmet place is lots of fun but pays less.

I thought I felt the presence of retail hatred when I first met you :p

I worked at Coles for approx 4 yrs (2yrs full, 2yrs casual) working registers and F&V and I have to definitely agree with you on pretty much all the points in your post :D The social aspect was tops, met heaps of cool people but working there was fucked. The only thing that differed each day was the amount of shit customers gave you and how much your boss would chew you out about something small and irrelevant.

I got so much revenge on the customers on my final day...
Mwuhahahaha:assfire:

I work at woolies as weekend backdock and Produce/Bakery/Nightfill during the week. I hate my job with all my heart, but cannot seem to get out of it. Ican get shittier jobs for less pay and more work, but don't see what is the point of that.

Im 26. I decided when I became 25 that if Im still working in retail by the time Im thirty, I will get a gun license, buy a gun and blow my brains out.

Working at pizza hut now. Not bad job. I just do shit in the kitchen. I wouldn't say its fun but there's nothing bad about the job.
