I just got this email from my service provider. I understand what it means, but what should i do about it?

Dear Sir,
I am forwarding the following Notice of Claimed Infringement relating to the IP address of your Exetel ADSL account. In forwarding you this notice Exetel are not alleging that you are infringing any copyright but are advising you that some other party has alleged that you have and has particularised that allegation within the attached notice.

We are taking this opportunity to remind you that under the terms of the provision of the Exetel ADSL Service you may not use your Exetel ADSL account for any illegal activity. You may choose to deal with this notice in the following ways:

1) Ignore it
2) Respond to the issuer of the notice denying the allegation (you may choose to copy Exetel on this response)
3) Remove the copyright infringing material

If Exetel receive another notice that alleges you are infringing copyright we will ask you to show cause why we should not ask you to move your ADSL service to another ADSL provider.

Regards,

Exetel Support

Think the wisest thing is to stop for a while, as your ISP is your life-blood. Well, I assume so. Mine is.

option 3.
Just go out and buy the movie on DVD. It prolly costs $10 ex-rental.

Yeah, go buy a copy of said movie, then you where only using the download as a backup. The best option would have been not to download movies at all. Sure the companys have a grip on the movies tighter than a pitbull/Darth Vader cross breed but it's not worth the risk for somehting you can just rent for a couple of bucks.

Respond to the issuer of the notice apologising that you downloaded it and after deleting the offending file you went to the markets on the weekend and some seedy asian guy sold you a pirated copy of the DVD.

then when you have it out for rent you can rip the movie to any quality you like and any format you like.

we make "backups" of every movie we rent that we like.

You could ignore the notice and continue doing what it is you are doing whatever that is and don't post it here cos it might become evidence right nuff said.

But if you do that you risk being the subject of an AFP or Stete Police raid cos the international treaties the speak of we have ratified (at least in part). The decision and risk are yours.

As for logins and seeding and such as long as they can tell where it is coming from or going to they will be able to track you and I am unaware as to whether anonymous logins help at all.

Again that is a matter for your discretion.

What you are putting at immediate risk however is your internet privileges so if you value them then you will do what is necessary to keep them.

Again the matter is in your hands

Hope this helps,

sagit

as you have allegedly stopped seeding, then you are in compliance of option 3.

I find that program fundamentally crippled. Starting it cuts many in-progress downloads - there's just too many false positives: I couldn't play BF2 with PG on because it blocked the GameSpy account servers. :fag: If the copyright owners want it's easy enough to use addresses that aren't on that simple blacklist. I also suspect that the lists have been poisoned by adding popular and functional P2P servers with no other reason than to keep people from connecting.

On another note, that message you got seems to be PGP signed. Does it tell where to find the related public key so that you can verify it?

yes peer guardian 2 is a waste of time, its not hard for them to change their ip.

private trackers or usenet is your friend.

Not being funny but why hasn't anyone suggested just changing ISP?

No.3

and reply telling them you removed and you apologise and will never do it again, then change ISP's

I wouldn't reply. It's admitting guilt. If anything I'd just say that I don't have such material (which should be true as of now).

Druid has the right approach... get rid of it, then reply to the email along the lines of:

"A thorough search of the applicable file systems reveals no such material, I believe you may have been mistaken."
