200mm Newtonian telescope, 20mm ocular. 9 images taken in bad weather and glued together. Didn't tweak the pics at all.
Smaller one (http://koti.mbnet.fi/firehart/Kuu_pieni.jpg)
Bigger one (~5 megs) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/firehart/Kuu.jpg)

Very nice. All I could manage is this (http://gallery.shakesbeare.com/sun-moon/IMG_1802), and this (http://gallery.shakesbeare.com/sun-moon/IMG_2159_crop) with a borrowed 90-300mm on my Canon 350D.

I've probably posted this before but this has to be one of the best one I've managed to take.

Alright, I also took some video of the moon last weekend as I wanted to try stacking the images. First time was, well... fascinating. I had 250 pics, from which I selected 45 "good" ones, stacked and used some extreme sharpening to bring out some details. Looks ugly, yeah, but it's still a long way until winter.

Firehart: the detail in that deviantart shot is incredible. What lens did you use to get so 'close'?
Matt_R: nice job also. I quite like the half moon shot - very nice.
Here is a moon shot of mine using a 300mm f/4 with a 1.4x extender (420mm in total). Then cropped at 100%. http://www.angstrom.com.au/index.php?showimage=7

jak, what iso sensitivity were you using?

ISO 100.
The EXIF data was actually listed at the end of the text. ;)

Canon EOS 10D
1/80 sec f 10 420 mm Flash: Not Fired 100
Sorry, I didn't get that the last number was the iso.
Given that you were using a fairly short exposure time anyway, what made you go for the low iso (the noise on a 10D is not that bad).

You make a good point (re. understanding what that number is). Will add the letters ISO in front I think.
re. why I chose ISO 100. As a rule, I always shoot ISO 100 if I can. Yes the 10D is great for low noise, but I just like to keep it clean as possible.
Upping the ISO would have achieved nothing more than a faster shutter (which I didn't need for that shot) or a smaller apperture (f/10 was just fine for depth of field).
Or maybe I just forgot that I had left it on ISO 100. ;)

Yeah, the city sucks for star photos.
Hey, be sure to post your star shots when you do them - be interested to see how you went.

Thanks :) Your shot is really great.
My friend won lotto and returned that 90-300 to buy a 70-200 F/2.8L and 2x TC (she also bought a 90mm macro). I'll have to borrow it next time the moon is in a nice spot. Its nice having rich friends with the same camera body :)
A Bigma (http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=105&sort=7&cat=37&page=1) is very tempting...
I have used a 70-200 F/2.8L - very very nice. Its on my wish list. :)
(thinking of selling my 300mm to get it - very very versatile lens).
Bigma - I like it. "Big and Heavy" :)

This lens would be useful for astrophotography :)

Look how small the camera body is compared with the lens!

This thread is so cool. Awesome pics all around. I have a telescope, but no camera hookup. I want to eventually take some pics of saturn and jupiter.

You'll need a bloody big scope for decent pics of the planets.
For adapters to hook a camera up to a telescope, check out www.scopetronix.com (click on "digital Camera Adapters" on the left side).

Im trying to do a deconvolution on the original imagine from the first post in matlab, the five meg one to see if i can get any extra information out of the pic, but it is currently rapeing my computer as it needs to perform a FFT before it convolutes it so eats up heaps of memory.

OK. So I have my nice new 100-400 canon lens which can read number plates off cars from 2 blocks away. I hooked it up with a 2x teleconverter last night and did another moon shot.
Wide open is f/11, and the 100-400 isn't the sharpest at 400mm, and the 2x tele is a cheap one - so the image quality isn't the best. Add to that a dodgy old tripod and well.. I had it up on ISO800 and only 1/125th shutter with f/11. If the moon had been a bit brighter, I would have stopped it down and reduced the ISO.
