Well, Ribbs is a shining example of what makes Arcane's Corner a fun place to be.
I like the laid-back feel of this place. McZ, Oggy, dundasbro and even royale lately, have started to chime in. Elf has been even more present, posting late into the night -- a real trooper.
It's been fun getting to know SOC in the last few days.
And when all else fails, Jhony and Seeker are always there to pick up the slack.
Gotta give it to Seeker though -- he managed to get his name into etherealchild's sig -- a babe breakthrough. I'm sure Jhony is gonna be jealous right there.

Okay, time for my bitch & rant.
GM announces layoffs today. People are pissing and moaning about it; fact is, the average wage for an auto worker is $25/hour. Seems to me the union has pretty much negotiated itself into massive loss of work for it's members. Did they not realize that higher wages = higher car costs = loss of sales = higher layoffs? Some dickhead on the news was lamenting the loss of jobs in his town (main employer is GM) and hoping Toyota or another Japanese automaker would move in and rehire the people put out by GM. If I recall, the Japanese automakers don't have unions, so their workers won't make as much but are probably better employed. I say fuck 'em; :fu: the unions got 'em into this, the unions can get 'em out of it. After all, that's what they pay their dues for. Bastards. Union came into the place I work, and only got the manufacturing side of the company (I work in developmental engineering). They're doing a pretty good job of running their positions into the ground there, too.

Now for a diversion:
I like to speed up West Burnside street, which is about 2 miles of winding 30% upgrade. Since I'm sure I'll eventually get a ticket for it, here's my theory (and I'm hoping someone will validate the physics/math involved for my court appearance). I figure I can speed as the stopping distance is less by going uphill, so going over the speed limit is justified. Anyone want to check this out?
(yeah, I'm a lazy bastard, don't feel like working it out myself. I figure someone here won't be able to pass up the challenge, plus would be better at ciphering than me and my poor, drug-addled musician's brain.)

The patience thing comes easy to me, I guess, and the explaining things repeatedly until they're clear. 1. He's at a "uniform" school, so if it happens often enough (more than 3x/week) that he's not in uniform and/or the uniform isn't clean, guess who has to come pick him up from school and attend mandatory parenting classes before he can return.
2. ... Well, the second one is a bit more delicate and I probably shouldn't go blabbing all his stuff on the internets. And when I think about it, it's not actually part of the problem - he throws stuff on the carpet, the smell's already IN the carpet by the time I'm telling him to pick them up, so the damage is done. It's just that the particular details of that part of it make me even more crazy than usual.
God. I swear, I never used to have to yell at him or anything. I'd tell him to do something, it was done. Used to be, I'd raise my voice maybe once every six weeks, if that. Now it's been twice in about two weeks that I've thrown a screaming hissy fit.

I had a wife once the believed that clothes were to be removed and left anywhere in the apartment. She was a fucking slob in all regards. I was so fed up after trying everything that I could think of month after month, the I finally hit on the ultimate solution: Any clothes that I found on the floor, anywhere, I would staple to the wall in the hallway. It took a bit, but after she ran out of money to buy new clothes, underwear, bras, etc. things got a bit better. Frank still laughs his ass off about it.

The stuff that is not required wear for school, I'd just throw it back on his desk or under his pillow. Putting an end to vicious cycles usually involves a period of turbulence, but if you don't send the message that you're not a maid, then things will continue as they are. Just my 2 cents.

These two pictures were taken at Ellington Field which is where NASA keeps all of it's plane here in Houston. The Coast Guard is also based at Ellington. Here in Texas you have to check for snakes during your preflight.

This part of Houston is sort of swampy. Cotton mouths, Rattle Snakes are normal. In the case of the above Rattle Snake, he was probably too cold to move very fast and as long as you keep moving backwards he is not going to get a chance to strike. We catch them in the house and buildings all of the time. I had a Cottonmouth in a cage on my desk for awhile. He would not eat so I put him in my garden at home. My wife kept finding him in the living room so I had to move him to the lake behind the yard. Found a Rattler in the middle of driveway last weekend. Tried to shoo him out of the way but he just rared up like a dumb ass. Finally had to chase him into the bushes.
Storm, that was just morning showers. Ellington is about 5 miles from Galveston Bay. NASA is right on the bay.

I'm happy that you all kept things hopping today. I have been SHOPPING. Well, actually I have been doing the driving and tour guiding, SOC has been shopping. God I love to visit snow but would hate to live in the shit. Its all fun and games until it never goes away. I used to live in Northern California around 2 hours away from Oregon and we used to get snow once in a while. Here in the Bay Area it never snows. Could drive 45 minutes too see snow but fuck that. The only thing snow is good for is snow skiing other than that you can have it.
Hell its not even snowing in the mountains yet out here. Too warm I guess thanks to the global warming.
I learned this morning (at 7-fucking-am!) that snowball throwing is lots of fun.
I have not figured out this global warming shit. Last year it snowed in Houston on Christmas Day. I used to live in Dallas and all we got was ice storms. Last time I saw any serious snow was in Northern Japan and I broke my foot snow boarding.

I have seen some plots of the sea level over the last 25000 years and the curve is sinusoidal. 22000 years ago we were at a glacial maximum and now we are approaching a glacial minimum. Sea level has gone up about 120 meters in the last 22000 years. In fact sea level has gone up 15 meters just in the last 8000 years which is during human expansion. The concept that it would rise another 1-2 meters is not surprising looking at the curves. That is not to say humans aren't making a mess of the planet but there are factors affecting the planet, like that big yellow sun of ours.

Without it or a diminishing of the magnetic field will cause problems with health, weather and power surges, etc. There is already a place called the South Atlantic Anomaly that will fry electronics on the Orbiter as it passes through it. I started when I was in the Navy and they cost $0.21 a pack. I think they were about $1 when I quit.
I gained about 50 lbs when I quit. Funny thing I also quit drinking at the same time. They go together. I have since taken drinking back up.

I also drink like a fish, I weigh 220 pounds (Somewhere around 13 stone) but I'm 6 2" so I'm not chunky looking.
When I quit smoking I weighed about 190. Now I am 240 but I am 6'3". Doctor says I need to get down to under 200. Yeah right.
