Hi, umm, this post is kind of a call for a bit of assistance...knowledge, if you will. I live in Brisbane at present, but within the next year or so, may be moving to Sydney for work relocation and/or study. I have a few rough ideas of where I could or would like to be, but some advice of Sydgurus would be better acknowledged first. Chances are i'd be working in Auburn, so what kind of areas around there are relatively affordable?
It'd only be me, and though I can probably afford it, $150+ may be pushing it for renting per week. I may leave my car in Brisbane, sinces its a soft-top suzuki and I don't really want it to be broken into, unless i can find a place with a garage. Any ideas/ reccomendations/ assistance would be really appreciated. Mind you, I don't want to be half a city away from where I work. Brisbane feels so tiny and rustic sometimes.
Thanks!

I hate to say it, but unless you're willing to share $150 isn't going to be enough pretty much anywhere...

If you're willing to share then $150 should cover it easily. I would suggest a quick search on www.domain.com.au would be your best bet :)Auburn itself is pretty cheap.

I used to live there a few years ago, and it can be a difficult place to get used to. It's very "multicultural", and I don't mean that that's a bad thing - but it can be difficult to get used to.

However some people love the area - it's cheap and has lots of good food, and it's the absolute dead centre of sydney.

Auburn is cheap if you want to be near your work but its not really a nice area to live (what I have been told). Your best bet would be to use realestate.com.au to find something in that area.

I dont know if you would get much on your own for $150. YOu could always share a place with someone/s.

I haven't cancelled out the prospect of sharing, but its looking like a more useful option given what you've suggested. Thanks muchly guys.

How long does it take to drive through Sydney though? I understand the traffic isn't the best. I have varied friends scattered across the city as far as Gordon (I know its pretty far....and expensive), Glebe, Kirawee, Ashfield and such. Would driving between those suggested places be a long and fuel draining trip?

yes - although public transport is long and annoying too!

While I'll be a bit more diplomatic, why are you moving mate? Unless it's a dream job I wouldn't be moving too Sydney!!

Seriously - Sydney is a wicked place to live, but it's too fucking expensive.

Try and live somewhere on the inner west train line, it's your best bet. Somewhere between Macdonald Town and Summer Hill would be good, plenty of share accomodation, tends to be a lot of people in their 20s. As the others have suggested, your own place would be hard to find for 150 or less, you'll be able to get a good place for 150 with share accomodation.

granville is a decent area.
its about 30 minutes by train to central, and you have express trains stopping there. the trains run fairly frequently
parramatta (for shopping and the like) is about 20 minutes walk or 5 minutes by train

And you shouldn't have a problem getting a place with parking.

I used to rent a small 2 bedroom unit in granville for $200 per week on my own, it had parking, and my own laundry (it was outside and around the other side of the building though). But you won't get anything decent for much cheaper than that.

oh yeah
and www.domain.com.au is also a good website to check.

in granville there is an lj hooker, so also try their website www.ljhooker.com.au

you could also try epping area, ryde, west ryde, meadowbank are all fairly cheap and decent areas. Strathfield is good location, but the place is a bit scary at night.

How close do you need to live to the City? How long would you want your daily commute to be?

Give us some kind of radius and I could list more places.

That's what I was going to say.

But try between Newtown & Ashfield. There are plenty of cheapish suburbs, with cool people, good facilities, close to the city, and dont make you feel like your way out in the burbs ...

Thanks for that Sapia, it certainly puts a lot into perspective as I know where those places are. As I said, Auburn would probably be the location I'd be working, so they aren't that far away. I don't really care that much about being close to the city (i live 10 minutes away from Brisbane CBD) and barely even go there anyway. My greatest concern of security/ safety is for my vehicle (haha, my priorities!) mainly because its quite easy to break into. Grr.

Thanks everybody, I'll certainly be taking this information to heart.

PS. Hurray for the only thread in this forum!

*nod* if you want cheaper, stay away from the train line, but I always prefer to live near a train line because paying the extra $10 in rent a week, is generally less than the $10+ fuel a week you'd pay to get to grocery shopping/takeout places.

Again, I suggest granville :P

Plus, I really liked the little turkish place near the station at granville, so friendly... and they make a kickarse pide.... supposedly their pizzas are tops too, but I could never go past their pide.
