...and Terry was offside. It doesn't matter. The only shot they had on traget was the penalty and the goal in the first round. There was a clear gulf in class between Chelsea and Barca and I am glad to see it. I hope Arsenal at least make the Semis so Highbury sees some big games before its closed down. Apart from the last North London derby there is nothing left League wise.

Dodgy goal, hate figure playing for the away team who gets sent off and end to end play. Ian Wright said he'd rather see England in the wilderness with and Eglish coach than win the world cup with a foreign coach. I think this sort of attitude sums up Englands problems.
McLaren was all set to walk in to the England manager spot, but then the FA decided to pull the plug on that and instead raise the hopes of 3 or 4 other English managers, offend Hiddink, scare off Scolari, and approach every other out of work manager.
And in the end, they'll just hire McLaren.
Steve McClaren.

Steve McLaren=English manager, nothing more. I think Sam Allardyce would have been a better choice, seing how he turns average players into a good team, where as Steve McLaren has done what's expected (or even less) with the players he has. Frankly i think England should get past the xenephovia of a foreign manager if they want to win anything soon.

Training practice; Quieroz was the ref
Ronaldo fouled by RVN
Ruud says something along the lines of; no surprise there giving your son a free-kick
Ronaldo kicks it all off saying his dad is dead, Ruud replies, "no Carlos is your dad". Mayhem ensues with a few of the senior players having a go at RVN Ronaldo pretty upset by the whole situation

• Goalkeepers: Robinson (Tottenham), James (Manchester City), Green (Norwich)
• Defenders: G Neville (Manchester United), R Ferdinand (Manchester United), Terry (Chelsea), A Cole (Arsenal), Campbell (Arsenal), Carragher (Liverpool), Bridge (Chelsea)
• Midfielders: Beckham (Real Madrid), Carrick (Tottenham), Lampard (Chelsea), Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Jenas (Totenham), Downing (Middlesbrough), J Cole (Chelsea), Lennon (Tottenham)
• Forwards: Rooney (Manchester United), Owen (Newcastle), Crouch (Liverpool), Walcott (Arsenal).
• Standby players: Scott Carson, Luke Young, Nigel Reo-Coker, Jermain Defoe, Andy Johnson.

Andy Gray was fucking embarassing. He was incredulous that nobody was booked for the 'foul' on Eboue that led to Arsenal's goal, funny how they neglected to show a replay. Eboue had already been booked at that point as well.
The sending off was as clear a sending off as you'll ever see. The keeper was outside of his box and clearly beaten by Eto'o. The ref couldnt have correctly played the advantage as the ball was played past the keeper by Eto'o, which meant Giuly was in an offside position. Whether the ref realised this at the time is highly unlikely, I admit.
Full marks to Arsenal because they played very well. Another positive for them is I think Henry is a certain gooner next year. He pretty much tore into Eto'o and Ronaldinho at the end there which suggests to me that Barcelona isnt a likely destination.

Really? I was pretty sure he was offside when Eto'o tapped the ball past the keeper and was brought down. Where was the defender playing him on?
Yeah I just saw it again on the news. Eto'o was fouled and made the pass on the edge of the penalty area. Giuly was a further 2 or 3 metres back. Onside. The goal should have stuck as well as the red card.
And funny how like you said, there was no mention of the dive by Eboue that set up the first goal. Biased commentary? Never!

It was a red card for Jens but the ref could seriously have just let Barca have the advantage and given Jens a yellow, that way it would have been 11 v11 (or 12) and a much more even context. I think we could have won today if it was 11 v 11 just a shame the ref bottled it
once we were down to 10 is was just a matter of when, not if we would concede
still pissed off how many Barca players were let of the hook by the stupid ref but our boys did themselves proud today, just wish we could have been more clinical with the chances we had... still in my view the ref ruined what could have been one of the greatest finals ever

Sheva, Kalou, Ballack to Chelsea plus the millions wasted on other players.. it's just not fair
this scale of spending is unprecedented in football history. not even real madrid nor inter combined have the financial resources that chelsea has. regardless of tactical acumen you cannot disregard the unfair advantage that chelsea's unlimited spending power has over the rest of the field. take note, finances are probably the most significant barrier to success for any football team. it limits any manager's capabilities. thats the purpose of management: to allocate SCARCE resources efficiently. management is management... in business or otherwise.
now given a situation where the constraint of scarcity is totally disregarded how can you say that the input of management is that significant? you can't.
all the rich clubs that you have cited: real and inter, they still have to deal with scarcity. real madrid had to sell their training ground to pay off debt for example. chelsea has no such limitations. they get away with NET LOSSES in their income statements every year and just laugh it off. imagine a business that can do that. thats not even business anymore. its totally insane. the fact that they can invest year after year without as much thinking of possible return on investment is totally beyond the scope of any financial model. i can only imagine chelsea's balance sheet: no cash, no liabilities and millions in abramovic's equity.
Hate Chelsea so much

Corradi throwing hadokens and shoryukens at Sun Jihai this week was pretty cool. But then again, I guess he has plenty of time in-between goals to work out his next celebration.

Football League clubs have agreed to consider a revolutionary proposal for penalty shoot-outs to decide all drawn matches as part of a wider review aimed at making the game more entertaining.
A meeting of the 72 league chairmen agreed to a working party being set up to consider the proposal among other ways of making their competitions more attractive.
The proposal was put forward by Football League chairman Lord Brian Mawhinney, and would see all drawn matches in professional league games outside the Premiership go to a shoot-out.

MK Dons manager Paul Ince is a strong favourite to take the vacant Derby job.
Derby chairman Adam Pearson told BBC Radio 5 Live he had "two or three main candidates to replace Billy Davies," who left the club on Monday.
Pearson said: "I want someone who is resilient and dogged, but who thinks he can win. Time is of the essence."
Bookmakers Coral said the "wheels may have already been put in motion" on an Ince deal and Ladbrokes took "£50 on Ince for every £1 on Paul Jewell".

In a bid to keep our pommie sport out of the other threads, I've decided to create a thread in which you can bitch at me, or others, about football.
What I'd like to avoid is people bitching that football is crap, as this is purely a matter of opinion and arguing about it would be pretty retarded.
I'm fully aware that people exist that do not like football, this I can accept as I don't like Cricket, American Football or Synchronised Swimming.

Ten months and a day after Stephen Pearson's play-off winner at Wembley sent Derby County into the promised land of the Premier League, the Rams are back where they started.
A campaign that started dismally and got progressively worse ended on Saturday with the quickest relegation in the history of the Premier League.
The bare facts make dismal reading: Derby have won only once this season in the league, they have scored a paltry 16 goals and conceded a monstrous 67. Managers Billy Davies and Paul Jewell have combined to win 11 points in 32 games so far.
But are the Rams the worst team the Premier League has ever seen?

Was what Billy Davis said about a year before.
The problem was our tight fucking board. The play-offs were the richest game in football - we got £60 million in benefits for winning that; so what do our board do? Spend fuck all in transfers when we went up, used $24 million to pay themselves back. By the time the greedy cunts had decided they needed to, and could, actually spend some money on players (January transfer window) it was too late, we were never going to stay up (I think we had 6 or 7 points!) and the whole team was demoralised.
Way to go, board! CUNTS!

I take it you are referring to Mile Sterjovski? The same Mile Sterjovski who hails from my hometown of Wollongong, NSW and played his junior football around the corner from my house? We're practically related!! :)
More interesting is the promotion race in the Championship. Ipswich are currently 7th and need to pull their finger out to get into the play-offs. They lost to Colchester last week and we have the derby against Norwich this weekend. We better win that one....

Talking of 'about time':
Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been jailed for assault and affray.
Barton, 25, was arrested in Liverpool on 27 December 2007 after he was involved in a confrontation outside a McDonald's restaurant in the city.
The Newcastle midfielder, of Foxbank Close, Widnes, admitted the charges last month but reporting restrictions were only lifted on Tuesday.
He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court where Judge Henry Globe QC sentenced him to jail for six months.
The judge told the former England player it was a "violent and cowardly act".
A spokesman for Newcastle United said the club was "considering" the verdict.
A statement read: "Newcastle United notes the sentence passed to Joey Barton at Liverpool Crown Court today.
"The club is considering the verdict and will be making no further comment at this moment." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7409943.stm

Barton, 25, of Foxbank Road, Widnes, was caught on CCTV knocking an unidentified man to the ground.
He then straddled the man, and punched him four or five times as his cousin threw food at the victim before Barton punched him up to 15 times more.
Minutes later, the player attacked a 16-year-old, punching him and leaving him with broken teeth.

MANCHESTER UNITED: Repercussions of Evil
Cristiano Ronaldo waited. The floodlights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were Galácticos in the stadium. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Alex Ferguson were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
Cristiano was a red devil for five years. When he was young he watched the games on television and he said to dad "I want to be on the pitch daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE SIGN BY REAL MADRID"
There was a time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the stadium of the Manchester United he knew there were Galácticos.
"This is Ferguson" the manager bellowed. "You must beat the Galácticos!"
So Cristiano gotted his setp over and blew a free kick over the wall.
"HE GOING TO BEAT US" said the Real Madrid
"I will tackle him" said the Cannavaro and he lunged in the slide tackle. Cristiano step overed at him and tried to nutmeg. But then he fell and he was injured and not able to score.
"No! I must beat the Galácticos" he shouted
The manager said "No, Cristiano. You are the Galácticos"
And then Cristiano was a Real Madrid player.
