View Full Version : Football Bitching: The 'soccer' thread

In a bid to keep our pommie sport out of the other threads, I've decided to create a thread in which you can bitch at me, or others, about football.
What I'd like to avoid is people bitching that football is crap, as this is purely a matter of opinion and arguing about it would be pretty retarded.
I'm fully aware that people exist that do not like football, this I can accept as I don't like Cricket, American Football or Synchronised Swimming.

Just to correct you on a couple of points :
Man U are clearly not the greatest. Arsenal are by far the better English (/French) team atm.
Alex Ferguson is a paedophile.
I don't want that pikey Keane in "my" team. Don't get me wrong, he's a good player, but he's too much agro. I'd far rather have Patrick Viera or Nicky Butt. Mick McCarthy should have taken him out with that big chin of his.

While I concur that Arsenal's current form is somewhat frightening, United have dominated the Premiership for ten years. And lets not forget that the season is a long one.
Arsene Wenger wants shooting if he thinks Arsenal will finish the season unbeaten.

Typical English football myopia. The best team at the moment is Real Madrid, with or without Ronaldo.
That said, Arsenal are rather good at the moment & definitely kicks Man U off the park.
Fergie is not a paedophile because he is a beastialist.
As far as midfield enforcers go, I'd take neither Keane or Viera as they too often get themselves into desciplinary problems. I'd take someone like S Gerard at Liverpool.
See you lads on the park on Sunday afternoon!

I agree, we were just discussing the Premiership.
The problem facing the rest of the European clubs is that the King of Spain is a Real Madrid fan.
You may recall a year or two ago that Real sold their training facilities to the King for over £100m, the king then gave it back to them.

United are just hitting form and will get better, this time of the season is historically a bad time for United, the premiership is won after christmas.

Fergie's beastiality? Applying the Bush-Blair standards of evidence, I'd point out his unnatural affinity for Arabian stallions.
I stand corrected on ENGLISH football. In English football, I agree with chronic, Arsenal are the best team at the moment & I doubt that despite all the foreign players in their team, they will get mushy feet during the winter. I recall Arsenal doing rather well during the last season's winter as well.
That said Liverpool are only 2 points behind Arsenal at the moment.

Liverpool don't have it in them to last the season, Arsenal did play well last winter and this season will be very close.
I recall several times in the past, however, when United have had a poor start to the season and proved the critics wrong.
I can't believe that some people were saying the season was over after six games.

I dunno what it is, but Man U just don't seem to be the team they were a couple of seasons ago. Its not like they have drastically changed their line up or anything, the core remains the same, they just don't seem to gell like they used to.
Although Everton have always been my team, I'm more a fan of good football, so it disapoints me that Man U aren't performing so well this season. What I'd like is for another close title race to keep things interesting (providing Everton finish mid table).
I agree that Liverpool probably don't have it in them to last the whole season (although I think they will probably finish top 4), but I do think that United will have to up their game sooner rather than later to give Arsenal a run for their money.

Here's my rant.
It's unfortunate that I live in the US and all of the sports SUCK. However, since i work third shift, i can catch up with BBC worldsport on the radio when i take my breaks.
Even with that, I only get scores. I can't watch a game ANYWHERE! Even with the MLS, they NEVER EVEN AIR THE GAMES. There are only 10 major league soccer teams, and only 2 or 3 of them are good, and only one of the teams has their own stadium to play in while the others have to rent/borrow stadiums of teams from other sports.
Football isn't football, in the US, it's soccer. Soccer - not to be confused with football, which is as entertaining as watching paint dry. Guys put on a shitload of pads, and run around and bump into each other every so often when there isn't down time. The only skill involved is getting FAT like almost every other god damn person in this country.
Guess what? Remember that game. . . oh, that one that no one cared about. You know, the WORLD CUP FINAL GAME? The ABC television network actually aired it, however, the local stations that syndicate ABC decided to show infomercials instead! It's okay though, ONLY A FOURTH OF THE WORLD WAS WATCHING. I had to watch the videotaped game later on in the day, because of these fucktards.
It looks like I have to wait until 2006, the next world cup, before I'll ever get to watch a game on television again. If you've read all of this, then maybe you'll start understanding what shit it is to be a football fan in the US. People give me strange looks when I say that I enjoy it, and somehow, they manage to change the subject to american football or cars. The fact that I can't seem to get away from talk about cars will be a seperate rant, soon to come.

This is bitching and rants right? K then I'll start. Totally agree with what Coreageek said. I'll just add that I get the impression that if the yanks didn't invent it then they don't like playing it 'cos it's crap even though the rest of the world disagrees. World series baseball (eh?wtf?)versus who? Fucking rounders with bigger bats.
Another thing (fucking manu) the team we love to hate :). Yes they are good, yes they are the most succesfull in the Premiership. So fucking what it's history over and done with. Everyones straight up their fucking arses, commentators do my fucking head in. You can tell they want manu to win when they watch it. Whenever Van Nistlerooy misses you get like "well it's not often you see that" sort of bollox comment. Yes he is a good striker, so what? Climb out of his rectum.
Leeds beat them the other week. Ok from where I was watching it was manu's game until Leeds scored. Then there wasn't any problem. I must admit I was expecting an even bigger onslaught, but it never came.
Anyway, when you haven't beat 'em for ages you tend to bask in your glory (the video is available on the leeds webby priced £10)so I'm like reading it on the teletext next day. Guess what the Fuckups had written? "Leeds Utd fresh from their glorious victory over the champions Man Utd". Fucking champions? Champions of fucking what? Excuse me but did they even win anything last season? They got fuck all just like Leeds I seem to recall.
This is what pisses me off. Everyones so far up their arses. It's only a fucking football team, it's not that important. I never want manu to win anything, even foreign games I want them to lose, because almost everyone else, for some bizarre reason, supports them. Where's the fucking logic in following someone, you don't live/was born anyway near?
I know loads of Manu fans from my area. Why do you support them I'll ask. "'Cos they're the best" comes their sad reply. So do you support Brasil in the world cup? "No do I fuck, I support England" Hello, will you make fucking sense please?
Manu have a problem these days, I reckon anyway. It's called "Everyfuckingone wants to beat the fucking bastards, so they try 50 times harder than usual." Fucking good.
Liverpool are the most successful team in English footy? Arsenal Are awsome atm. They beat Leeds 1-4 at Elland rd. SFW? They were unlucky they should have had more. Manu are the only team I hate in the world:) Jealousy you might say, well maybe a bit? But really it's 'cos everyone supports 'em. It's only football, why does it piss me off so much.
If it wasn't for these people I could enjoy watching Man Utd win ('cos it's brilliant football) instead I have to sit there and suffer as they go on their way annihilating some good team that are made to look shit.
Alan Smith interview the other week.
"Is their any team that you would never play for?"
"Yeah, Man United" Well said that lad. And don't say that they wouldn't have him 'cos it's not the point.
Whew, I'm off for a lie down.

When I was living in Essex/loughton, I barracked for Arsenal. Damn Manchester United pricks kept thrashing every team that dared walk out onto the pitch to meet them, but I still kept saying that Arsenal was the best team. I may have been wrong then, but it's good to see they are killing the opposition now, even if it is a few years too late.

I'll agree that grid iron sucks though, but I just ignore it. If anyone starts turning the conversation towards it, I usually just point out that grid iron is rugby for women. They always disagree, but in the end their argument boils down to something like "oh, we strap a sofas worth of pillows to our shoulders and don a motorbike helmet because we are not dumb and we don't want to get hurt like those rugged rugby fellows. Also, we wear skin tight jodphurs because they make us run faster, not because we like looking at each others arses.".

Well, I've heard people say that the MLS isn't bad. I did make it to a game in Columbus, though (the team that Brian Mcbride plays for), and I noticed that MLS teams are really bad compared to the international teams. Mostly in the way that you compare american movies to foreign films. Americans are all about the action, while other countries seem to be more involved in thought, or an equal balance between the two. If i could only count the missed goal opportunities because of lack of strategy and the desire to be the goal maker instead of the assister. The Columbus Crew won by some miracle, and DC United (who actually had strategy) lost 2-1.
Most of the national team players are from the MLS, though - which is not bad, because on every team, there are a few players who are willing to have a balance between action and strategy (or they're just plain good). Our national team is what I think the MLS teams should play like (not in skill but in strategy), but it isn't so. That's why the MLS All Stars Vs. The US National team was such a joke - I didn't even get the scores for it. . . who needs to.

The thing I like about American football (soccer), is that penalty shoot out at the end if it's a draw. Where you have a run up with the ball from 1/2 way. They ought to do this all over, instead of the "ordinary" penalties that they usually end up taking.

Football is Crap
Soccer is dull, uninteresting, tedious, dreary, tiresome, and all the other MS Word synonyms for 'boring'. I'd rather staple my head to a stallion's schlong and have it thrust repeatedly into a horse's vagina than watch a sport where numbing the arse off the other team with monotonous back-and-forthery is a prerequisite for winning. Soccer's popularity does not demonstrate it's superiority as a game, but is merely an indicator that the general population is either as stupid as a plank or lacks an alternative sport to watch. Within Australia, the Greatest Sporting Nation on Earth, soccer rates in popularity somewhere between wheelchair high-jumping and cheese-rolling, and the reason for it's unpopularity is that Aussies know a fucken shithouse sport when they see one. I'd argue further, Misterbishi, but I fear that you will only trip over one of my irrefutable points of logic, swan dive, milk a penalty shot and claim you won the argument. grrr, dont you hate when you craft a long and eloquent post to have it get lost ......... Ill try again
First of all, I do truly believe that soccer is the rightful claimant to the title of FOOTball; I hope the purist dont mind I call it by the fostered name of soccer....
Ive played soccer since 1977, im NOT and never will be much of a sport watcher (barring world cup action); but I have formed a few opinions along the way.
To me, whats wrong with soccer is:
Offside rule - holds up the flow of the game
Conservative defence - if it comes anywhere near your end boot the hell out of the ball
Low scoring - Fans are understandby disappointed when for all the action the scoreboard stays low and uneventful
Poor results - Often drawn games, or worse a fluke result will give a win to a team that obviously doesnt deserve it on the skill merits
Diving/faking - Its such a poor and lowly way to earn free-kicks
Penalty shootouts - such a WRONG way to decide the result, this is my pet pev playing the game - it must be changed.
Nationalism (racism) - extending down to every league Ive ever played in, why do teams needs an ethnic/cultural affliation; some people will drive the entire length of the city just to play with people that came from their same country. Just play the game I say.
FIFA - international governing body that holds the rules to the game unwavingerly.
More recently I playing alot more 5-a-side soccer, and its so much better:
There is no offside rule - with limited players its a gamble to send a player to the other end, its no good kicking the ball out - possesion is the most valuable assest in the game, scoring is quite high in most games - ten goals in a game is common (plus its not 90mins but 40mins), diving is rare - free kicks are generally blocked and its easier to score swiftly with the defence more open, penalty shootouts remain (grr) but are rare, the teams are small and mixed backgrounds (hurrah!), and finially the league has no affliations - so the rules are adjusted often, sensibly and trial ideas can be used.
I know some rule changes have been brought to traditional soccer, such as pass-backs, time wasting and golden-goals; but in my opinion it just hasnt saved the game from its well deserved critiques.
The game is in serious need for reform; theres alot of admirable talent and skill employed with ball handling, but its just too easy to lock down and make it scoreless and actionless ......
Bostonmess
08-10-2002, 05:50 PM
You're damn right, Chronic, I'm not not surprised, another thing wrong with the game, Sperm is it's too long. If it was only 80 minutes, Manu wouldn't have won half the titles they've won :)
I think the offside rule for me is the thing that makes it exciting, otherwise they might all be stood on the goal line waiting for the big punt up field. To be honest I don't mind it being called soccer, though I'm used to calling it footy/football.
Penalties, though a bit of a dodgy way to decide a game are exciting as fuck, I just wish they'd adopt the American system where they take a run up from half way. My friends would like to crucify me for suggesting/admitting this.
Low scoring is just a fact of the sport. It's not the easiest thing to get the ball in the back of the net. Goals are great but they aren't everything. Take last night, Manu v Everton, should have been a pretty enjoyable nil nil. But 3 goals in 5 minutes or whatever and it ends up 3 nil. Great goal scored by Scholes.
Conservative defences I can't say much about as I used to be in one. Well, actually, everyone else was ok. It was just me that used to shat 'em and punt the ball back from whence it came. I never scored in about 3 years, playing for a pub team.
Diving sucks, there should be more red cards brandished for looking a twat.
Nationalism/racism. I'd play with anyone (fnar fnar) but when it comes to support I believe you should support your local.
I don't think it needs reform. Could benefit by somemore good ideas like the back pass law. I don't like the golden goal, though they've changed it a bit recently, so that might improve it.
It is too easy to make it scoreless and actionless, but they changed the points ruling ages ago to deter this. It's only one point for a draw. Still you can't blame teams going to old trafford and looking for a point. It's manu's game to break 'em down which they almost inevitably do.
Everton were unlucky, overall Manu were the better team, but it could have gone either way until the 85th minute or whenever it was.
sperm
08-10-2002, 06:05 PM
The offside rule in traditional is needed, but often bitched about by ppl who dont understand it. Quite simply without it too many injuries would occur as the goalkeeper tries to spoil the forwards.
Penalty shootouts are the ultimate evil, its the scorers against the goalkeeper. The skills to win this are vastly different to winning a game in normal time. It doesnt take into account the strength of a defense. As a goalkeeper myself, im short but stocky, so Im good at quick reflex shots and taking the ball competitively from peoples feet; but with penalities i have limited reach - its hardly fair :p
I would like to see the return to a re-scheduled game (what ever happened to those?); or attrition, each side must remove one player each in extra time every five minutes; that would strip the team to their essential players and a more likely result.
Theres lots of other radical ideas I have seen mooted about; why cant any of these be trialled ? shootouts are just wrong, you may as well roll the dice to determine the winner.
Racism is alive and well in australian soccer; althought I consider myself 'english' you dont get a choice but to play in ethnic based teams; I played dutch as a junior and greek as a senior. Theres even some teams (e.g. ethopian) where im staggered to think theres enough numbers in town to even form a club !
Not that long ago there was a big push to remove references to national flags from the NSL (national soccer league) team emblems - alot of people werent happy about it !
Incidently - 5-a-side soccer is limited to roughly 40 minutes; 18 minute halfs; and theres still way more action to defeat the critics!!

Strictly neither Football or Soccer is correct. The full correct name is Assocation Football. In my opinion both names are equally valid abbreviations, though I use soccer & use football to refer to Australian Rules Football, that being the dominant football code of this region.
Ive played soccer since 1977, im NOT and never will be much of a sport watcher (barring world cup action); but I have formed a few opinions along the way.
To me, whats wrong with soccer is:
Offside rule - holds up the flow of the game
I used to hold this view, but i feel that changing this rule would create an overly large change in the skills of the game. There would also be a much larger increase in Head on collisions & similar injuries. it would also increas the prevalence of the Conservative defence as mentioned below.
Conservative defence - if it comes anywhere near your end boot the hell out of the ball
Low scoring - Fans are understandby disappointed when for all the action the scoreboard stays low and uneventful
Soccer isn't the only sport where overly conservative defense is found frequently, Basketball & Aussie Rules are some examples. Furthermore attempts to artificially remove such defence & increase scoring often turn the game into a farsical impersonation of it's former self (ie: NBA vs Real Basketball)
Poor results - Often drawn games, or worse a fluke result will give a win to a team that obviously doesnt deserve it on the skill merits
If you do not score more goals than the opponent. you have not demonstrated the necessary skills to win the game.
Diving/faking - Its such a poor and lowly way to earn free-kicks
Happens everywhere. Soccer is actually one of the only sports to penalise this at the moment.
Penalty shootouts - such a WRONG way to decide the result, this is my pet pev playing the game - it must be changed.
yes, but short of a rematch or never ending string of extra time periods there isn't any better option.
Nationalism (racism) - extending down to every league Ive ever played in, why do teams needs an ethnic/cultural affliation; some people will drive the entire length of the city just to play with people that came from their same country. Just play the game I say.
Again it's not the only sport to suffer such problems. Basketball comes to mind as an example. This is the same reason India Vs Pakistan cricket games are almost always played on neutral venues.
FIFA - international governing body that holds the rules to the game unwavingerly.
If FIFA wasn't there UEFA would turn into a soccer version of the NBA.
More recently I playing alot more 5-a-side soccer, and its so much better:

Ultimately the 'boring' soccer is mostly played by teams that lose. The motivation to win should be sufficient motivation to produce an exciting game.

Penalty shootouts are fair, but they are as they say a bit of a lottery. I like to see 'em (sort of) 'cos they're exciting. In the english premiership if it's a draw it's a draw. The cups tend to do the rematch then the extra time then the penalties, depending which competion and how far they are into it.
World cup/international footy these days (I think) they are going for the golden goal still. However the rule changes so that whoever is winning (if anyone) at the end of half time of extra time are the overall winners. If it's a draw then it goes on for another 15 mins. During these fifteen minutes if one team scores the other team needs to get an equalizer. This sounds like a really good idea in theory and should make it really exciting. If there are no winners at full time then it's penalties.

John O'Shea played a blinder, as did David Beckham.
Silvestre had a mare, yet again, he gives away possession too often, as did Juan Veron.

I disagree, Everton didn't have a real chance until Rooney came on at the end, although United's finishing, and Veron/Silvestre's passing was poor.
We should have had the game wrapped up by about 60 minutes.
I feel sorry for the United fans who left the ground on 85 minutes and missed all three goals. :p

ATM you're like Leeds (but better obviously, duhh). In my opinion we/you need more midfield strength. I'd like to see Batty (old fooker) get a run out, even if he's knackered. You're missing Keane and Butt.
Dacourt's hurt his knackers, I like him he's got that strength but can still play a bit too. So has Bowyer but ATM he is shite, don't know why, you'd think he'd really be trying to sell himself with his contract ending soon and being on a Bosman.
WTF has happened to Kewell. The next Ryan Giggs. We should have sold him 3 year ago when he was good. Smithy I don't rate as a striker (great player) I'd drop into midfield, 'cos he's a crazy fooker. I see him as a Sheringham but stronger. People compare him to Shearer. Errrr well ok, but he doesn't score, so apart from that........
A year or so ago I was saying all we need is someone who can finish ('cos in my opinion we were getting loads of chances). Then we got Fowler (whoopee) then he got injured. Now when he comes back he'll be lucky to get any chances the way we're playin.
At the start of the season I was saying that Robinson could win us the league. Now I'm saying Robinson could stop us from being relegated :(
Everyone was buzzin' about Venebales being appointed, so much so that they forgot that Oleary had done a good job (ok so he didn't win owt). Now their all saying he's got to go. Give him a season or so I reckon/hope/pray.

Venables was a good/proven manager until he got to Elland Rd. Typical Leeds luck. Minstya I can't see 'em being relegated. As they say the only way is up almost. But for Everton :) well err I hope they hold their form for you Chronic. But I doubt if they will.
Good league ATM, much better than when MANU were winning everything.
Fuck morale. They should be going out and having a go. Like they did against MANU (last time they won at home). Getting hammered every week should make you play better or at least try harder. Still reckon they need a stronger midfield.

You're right Charley, our run of form might not last. That's why I have to make the most every victory we have. I'll just be pleased if we finish in the top half of the table.
I can't remember the last time we were 6th at this stage in the season.
As for Rooney, I just hope he doesn't turn into another Jeffers. I really hope he delivers his full potential not just for Everton but for England too in the future. Just imagine the combination of him and Owen up front, it would scare the shit out of any defence.
Bostonmess
05-11-2002, 05:35 AM
The thing with our teams Chronic, is that they need to be the underdog. Like when Leeds were in the Champions league. When leeds played MANU, they upped their game. OK when they played Arsenal they might aswell have not turned up.
When they played Everton (no disrespect) Leeds were the ones expected to win and Everton were the underdogs. Actually the teams were much closer than thought and I reckon it was the extra effort by Everton that turned the match so one sided. Hopefully it will be more of a contest at Goodison.
Wonder what's gonna happen against the Hammers at Upton? I mean they're playin' crap and I reckon Leeds will probably walk into that expecting to win. West Ham might seize the oppotunity to turn them over. Then again Leeds might really give it a go. Think they've had 2 points out of 18 now so it's about time they put some effort in, instead of just turning up and expecting to win.
Bollox to it I'm past caring. C'mon Real Madrid :)

This took me loads of tidying up. Some of 'em I've heard before. I especially like the thermos one :)
POSH AND BECKS
The England captain is the guest speaker at a management seminar. He steps up to the podium and begins his speech. "They're small and minty and keep my breath fresh for up to two hours and to Victoria's delight they're only two calories".
The audience looks stunned, when a small voice from the side of the podium whispers, "No David, you're here to talk about tactics."
_______________
Posh and Becks are sitting in front of the television watching the six o'clock news. The main story is a man threatening to jump off the Clifton Suspension Bridge on to the busy road below. Posh turns to Becks and says: "David, I bet you ?5,000 that he jumps!" to which Beckham replies "?5,000?
"Done! I bet that he doesn't." So they shake hands on the bet and continue watching. Sure enough, the man jumps and hits the road below with a loud thud. Beckham takes ?5,000 out of his back pocket and hands it to Posh. But she refuses.
"I can't take Your money, David," she says. "The truth is, I was cheating. I saw the five o'clock news, so I knew he was going to jump."
"No, babe, fair's fair" says David. "That money is yours fair and
square I was cheating just as you were. I saw the five o'clock news, too. I just didn't think he would do it again."
_______________
The Manchester United players are in the dressing room on Saturday, just before the game, when Roy Keane walks in. "Boss," he says, "there's a problem. I'm not playing unless I get a cortisone injection." "Hey," says Becks. "If he's having a new car, so am I."
_______________
David Beckham goes shopping, and sees something interesting in
the kitchen department of a large department store. "What's that?" he asks.
"A Thermos flask," replies the assistant.
"What does it do?" asks Becks.
The assistant tells him it keeps hot things hot and cold things cold. Really impressed, Beckham buys one and takes it along to his next training session.
"Here, boys, look at this," Beckham says proudly. "It's a Thermos flask."
The lads are impressed. "What does it do?"
they ask.
"It keeps hot things hot and cold things cold," says David. "And
what have you got in it?" asks Roy Keane. "Two cups of coffee and a Choc ice," he replies.
________________
David Beckham had a near-death experience the other day when
he went riding. Everything was going fine until the horse started Bucking up and down out of control. He tried with all his might to hang on but it was no good. With his foot caught in the stirrup, he fell head-first to the ground. His head continued to bump on the ground as the horse refused to top or even slow down. Fortunately, however, there was a happy ending. Just as he was giving up hope and losing consciousness, the Woolworth's' manager came along and unplugged it.
________________
Posh takes her car into a garage to have some dents removed.
The mechanic knowing she isn't the brightest Spice Girl in the world, decides to play a joke on her. "You don't need me to take those dents out," he says. "Just blow up the exhaust pipe and the metal will pop back into place".
So she takes the car home and tries it. David spots her from the house, opens a window and shouts, "Victoria ! You have to wind the windows up first!"
________________
David Beckham is celebrating: "57 days, 57 days!" he shouts
happily. Posh asks him why he is celebrating. He answers: "Well, I've done this jigsaw in only 57 days."
"Is that good?" asks Posh.
"You bet," says David. "It says 3 to 5 years on the box."

MILNER MAKES HISTORY
by Graham Walker
UNITED starlet James Milner has etched his name in the record books by becoming the youngest ever player to score in the Premiership with a goal at the Stadium of Light.
Milner - aged 16 and 357 days - took the record set recently by Everton's Wayne Rooney by just four days with his goal in the 50th minute.
The Academy star was on the bench today, but was given his chance of glory by Terry Venables after Alan Smith suffered concussion in a clash of heads in the first half.
Playing on the right-wing, Milner's achievement is made all the more special by the fact that the goal came from midfield and not as a striker.

Liverpool!
Let me tell you the story of a poor boy,
Who was sent far away from his home,
To fight for his king and his country,
And also the old folks back home
So they put him in a highland division,
Sent him off to a far foreign land,
Where the flies swarm around in their thousands,
And there's nothing to see but the sand.
As the battle was starting next morning,
Under the radiant sun,
I remember that poor Scouser Tommy,
Who was shot by an old Nazi gun
As he lay on the battlefield dyin-dyin-dying,
With the blood gushing out of his head (out of his head)
As he lay on the battlefield dyin-dyin-dying,
These were the last words he said:
Oooh, I am a Liverpudlian,
I come from the Spion Kop,
I like to sing, I like to chant,
I go there quite a lot.
Support a team, that plays in red,
A team that we all know,
A team that we call Liverpool,
To glory we will go.
We won the league, we won the cup,
We've been to Europe too,
We played the Toffees for a laugh,
And left them feeling blue 5-0
1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4, 5-0!
Rush scored one,
Rush scored two,
Rush scored three,
And Rush scored four ...

Right, completely off topic but if any of you blokes visit the bbc site on the english premiership you would be hard pressed to ignore lawro's brilliant premiership predictions. My friend reckons you can make money by automatically assuming lawro's predictions as wrong, so that has prompted me to set up an "anti-lawro" project. Basically what I do is make a prediction on the result of a match for my anti-lawro, but I am not allowed to make the same prediction as lawro even if i agree with him. I post each of our predictions before the matches and determine the winnings for each of us at the completion. All odds are supplied by sports tab...

But in 99% of cases it's true, loads of birds go 'I love beer and football' to gain popularity in the pub and you go 'what's the offside rule' and there all 'umm.. I need another Archers... kthx'
Chrissy
04-04-2003, 09:42 PM
Oh...ok I agree... that is very true..
But...I don't like beer , and I don't drink Archers, in fact I am tee-total, as I am what is catagorically known as a cheap date! 1 glass of wine and I swear...I am pissed as anything!
I do love football though, and although I don't claim to be an expert, I support Liverpool with the best of them, go along to as many games as I can afford, and I reckon I do ok in the discussions, I don't think I talk crap (although I did once cheer when James picked up a ball that had been passed back to him, as I wasn't paying attention, and though he'd just saved a goal!)
I do understand and I can explain the off-side rule, although you would probably pick holes in my explaination, AND....I know all the words to Scouser Tommy (and that WAS before I had seen them posted here earlier in the thread!!!:D )
However...on the totally girlie side...David Beckham has got fabulous legs!:D

Why? Because most of them (that live in England) have never been to a game (would get there suits grubby!), coincidentally some of them are now Arsenal fans (I use that term loosely) since that's who won The Title last season and their Manager is a total cunt who has ruined careers and destroyed the confidence of many a young up-and-coming player.
This should have gone into RANT actually.

alex ferguson is not a cunt, he is only trying to get his players to achieve the things which he couldn't do himself as a player (cause he wasn't that great, ex Rangers and my club Falkirk player) he may have killed any confidence SOME young up and coming players had, but I firmly believe that without him as a motivator some of the stars of that squad, beckham, giggs, scholes, butt etc would not be half the players that they are today.
all I hope is that he goes out at the top and doesn't hang around till his team is doing shit, hopefully win the champions league this year (at Old Trafford) :)

Yeah wouldn't surprise me. I hear they're 70 Mil in debt, so it looks like they'll be lucky to have a team next season. I heard that Robbo's been looking at a house near Arsenal and also Kewell linked with MOANU, Arsenal and Liverpool.
70 mil? Who they gonna have to sell? Smith, Kewell, Robbo, Viduka. Be lucky to get forty mil there? Mills? 5 mil?
Smithy won't go to MANU though :)
What's this I've heard about Fergie moaning on saying it's a fix that they've got Real? Also, Carlos shouldn't be playing 'cos he got sent off in some other competition? Did he shove the ref or something? MANU never do anything like that.

World series baseball (eh?wtf?)versus who? Fucking rounders with bigger bats.
Another thing (fucking manu) the team we love to hate :). Yes they are good, yes they are the most succesfull in the Premiership.
first off, i am a football player (and i do mean soccer). i live here in the U.S. and i hate american football. i was one of the few people lucky enough to know someone with a satelite dish so that i could actually watch some EPL and world cup games. i have been playing soccer as long as i can remember and it is my first love.
secondly, it is true that if we didn't invent the fucking sport we could care less about it. but it is growing. we made it to the 16 in the world cup and more and more kids are playing at a younger age. i am watching my local club team busting at the seams with kids that want to play soccer.
and lastly, not that soccer or baseball are compareable in any way, i'd like to say that manu is to football, what the yankees are to baseball. they ARE the team you love to hate.
that is all...

I'm not bothered about him going, apart from the possibility that it will be harder to get Kate watching the footy now.
Seeing him laughing and joking with that little fucker Michael Owen straight after the whistle at the league cup final pissed me off, as did the similar performance with Robbie Carlos after the second leg of the Madrid game.
I'm a little worried about Ronaldinho though, £9m is a good price for a player of his quality, but South Americans don't do too well in English football traditionally, although I suppose the weather is only marginally colder than Paris.

England captain David Beckham is set to line up for Real Madrid next season and not Spanish rivals Barcelona, according to reports from Spain.
Indeed, it is thought that the England captain's possible £30 million transfer could be completed from Manchester United by Real president Florentino Perez before the end of the month.

Being a Derby fan at the moment is akin to that poor bastard who lost his wedding tackle on the 'News' page today:( :(
From The Guardian:
'Richardson to take over Derby'
Adrian Milledge
Wednesday June 11, 2003
The Guardian
"Bryan Richardson, the former Coventry chairman, is set to return to football as the owner of Derby County. The deal is expected to be finalised at the beginning of next week.
Richardson, who was ousted in a boardroom coup at Highfield Road 18 months ago, is heading a consortium negotiating to take over the debt- ridden First Division club from Lionel Pickering.
Derby owe £30m and the move will not be popular with the fans, not least because Coventry were almost twice that much in debt when Richardson left. The former Warwickshire cricketer was made aware of their feelings last season, when he spent two months at Pride Park with a view to taking control. His car was vandalised during a home game and his involvement ended soon afterwards.
In addition to helping Pickering run the club, Richardson had tried
to put together a £30m bond for a takeover. It is understood a bond is not involved in this latest attempt to buy the chairman's 53.5% stake. Pickering has made it clear he will step down if the right man comes forward with £5m-£8m, and he appears to have endorsed Richardson's bid. "If Derby fans can accept Robert Maxwell, I can see no reason why they can't accept Bryan Richardson," he said.
"People say he's got no connection with Derby but neither had
Maxwell. And he did offer to help me last autumn, a time when I
needed as much help as I could get."
You would have thought he got the hint when we got his car...looks like we'll have to get up close & personal this time. Some people just can't take a hint:rolleyes:

I have been totally expecting this all along...slippery buggers those Real Madrid lot..
Personally I think they'll let Barcelona make all the running and then swoop in there with an extra £20k a week etc etc deal, I believe they've been known to do this before.

Word History: “Oh yes, Mater, we had a posh time of it down there.” So in Punch for September 25, 1918, do we find the first recorded instance posh, meaning “smart and fashionable.” A popular theory holds that it is derived from the initials of “Port Out, Starboard Home,” the cooler, and thus more expensive, side of ships traveling between England and India in the mid-19th century. The acronym POSH was supposedly stamped on the tickets of first-class passengers traveling on that side of ships owned by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. No known evidence supports this theory, however. Another word posh was 19th- and early 20th-century British slang for “money,” specifically “a halfpenny, cash of small value.” This word is borrowed from the Romany word påh, “half,” which was used in combinations such as påhera, “halfpenny.” Posh, also meaning “a dandy,” is recorded in two dictionaries of slang, published in 1890 and 1902, although this particular posh may be still another word. This word or these words are, however, much more likely to be the source of posh than “Port Out, Starboard Home,” although the latter source certainly has caught the public's etymological fancy.
Hmmm, doens't look like it. :)

Well aren't you the little analyst!
Madrid were on the phone to me earlier, they want me to have old Robbie Carlos' shirt - but I love me fish and chips too much so I'm sticking with the helpdesk stuff for now.

mmmm, I think that they are going to suffer a bit without their glorious leader, as much as I love Owen (and I do!) I think it'll take him a while to find his feet as captain.
What I would really like to see is Gerrard punting it into the back of the net from about a mile away:D
I love it when he does that!

Rooney's starting. If he and Owen get more of their chances on target we'll piss it :)

Hmmm, perhaps, alhough with Owen, he'll be too busy worrying about being a good captain than goal scoring! He can be a bit precious when there's too much pressure on him.
(and before anyone starts, I am a Liverpool supporter, and therefore allowed to put Owen down! If any of you start, I will be forced to come round in my Kappa shellsuit and break your knee-caps:D )

Remind me not to go to the bookies with you....You, of all people, should know that as soon as you put 'calamity' James in an England shirt we are done for.
Oh, the shame & humiliation...you *know* our lives are not going to be worth living for a while from our aussie bretren if this continues.....

OK, *I'm* humiliated & shamed...lol...fair play chrissy..for today *only* I will give Mr (Sir) Owen my worship... But our defence were pant's, thank christ Calamity wasn't called on to do any REAL work, and I have never seen such terrible finishing by many people on the pitch (and not just England players!). Gerrard played well and...well, erm, (stuck here).
Still, it's the result that count's, but that 1st half against ANY decent opposition and we would have been 4 or 5 down, IMHO.
Lampard looked like he was just wandering around the stadium on his own..no hurry, let's just wander..
