My parents are overseas for a few months, and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time (my cooking skills are basically limited to sausages, spaghetti bolognaise, and grilling chicken breast).

What are some cheap meals which are easy to make, and don't taste like cardboard?

Get some beef or chicken strips, heat some vegetable/canola/peanut oil in a wok (or frying pan if you don't have one) over a medium-high heat. When it's hot, chuck in the strips and stir them around until they're sealed and have changed colour. Drain off the excess fat, throw in some vegetables if you like and stir them around for a bit longer. Finally, throw in a couple tablespoons of soy sauce and a packet of hokkien noodles, mix it all about until it's heated through and voila, cheap and easy stirfry.

If you don't have hokkien noodles around, an even more budget version can be made by getting a pack of 2 minute noodles, chucking out the seasoning sachet, and soaking the noodle cake in boiling water for a couple minutes before using in place of the hokkien noodles.

I have a thing for Honey and Soy chicken nuggets served with carrot, corn and broccoli at the moment.
