After significant build-up, I went to Wolf Creek on Saturday. For those who don’t know much about it, it’s an Australian horror film purported to be based on true events. (Which is a blatant lie; it should have been billed as ‘Inspired by true events’ or something similar). Its base is on a combination of events associated with the serial torture and killings of backpackers by Ivan Milat in NSW, and the disappearance and supposed murder of Peter Falconio in NT.
This was a great film, the plot was fantastic, but the screenplay was let down by silly additions that could have been done in a much more believable way.
/spoiler such as a scene where one of the main characters returns to the camp she was assaulted in, to get a vehicle to escape. She finds a few vehicles but then spends heaps of time looking through stuff stolen from other victims. I assume this scene was put in to show that the murders were part of a series, but it was so stupidly unrealistic that it severely damaged the credibility of the film.
There were brilliant performances by the 4 main actors who were highly believable, and the direction and cinematography was equally as good.
There is some significant violence that is very confronting, but not out of context nor gratuitous.
Verdict- Despite the fact that film is inaccurately marketed, it is well worth seeing if you like horror and suspense films, just try to forget the ‘based on truth’ crap and enjoy it for the highly professional well acted production that it is, or you may find yourself picking huge holes in the story and not giving it the credit it deserves.
