Discussion debates and suggestions.
Debate your favourite wines, nominate some good drops, or just list your favourite bottles.
Personally, as preference I am a Penfolds man (St Henri, Bin389, Bin 407, Bin 128), but anything good and red will be well received.
Also I'd like to see things in categories ie under $10, $15 & $20
Carry on kids!

If it doesn't taste like vinegary crap I'll drink it but of course some wines are better than others -McGuigan verdelho (not black label) is one that springs to mind, nice inexpensive wine that always tastes good (to me anyway). Much prefer white over red though rosemount cab sav is win.

The other night I bought a cape mentelle cab sav 2000, it was fucking great. I highly recommend red wines from the margaret river.
At the moment my favourite white wines are from NZ, I don't mind the amberley chenin blanc though, its a decent drop.

Which was a good job for me because it was the first sparkling I'd tried to buy :D

I've certainly had worse wines. I don't think I claimed it's premium (and I don't touch Fosters).
I'm just waiting for someone to denounce merlot because they've watched Sideways.

Audrey Wilkinson (http://www.audreywilkinson.com.au/)'s verdelho 2001 was the best verdelho I've ever had. Her traminers are very good, as is the cabernet sauvignon 2002.
If you are going to the Hunter be sure to go here.

I'll denounce merlot for you druid. I haven't seen sideways but I find merlot to be a bit too fruity for my tastes - I much prefer a good shiraz in reds, or cab sav for something mellower.

that's always been DumHed's motto and it usually works out well most of the time. I guess we're fortunate in Australia that price really hasn't much correlation to quality, for the most part - I've had $30+ wine that is fairly meh, and some $10 stuff that is fantastic.

seems that you can only find hardys or jacobs creek here in blighty. theres a big gap in the market for wines of a better standard, its either that crappy stuff or the top end granges that seem to make it to europe. maybe they have trouble competing with the cheaper argentinian stuff.
i resent having to pay £6-8 for stuff id never drink at home and costs $4-5.

The problem in Blighty is the bargain wineries like Lindemans and Jacobs from Oz and their equivilants in each other wine producing country in the world. They sell cheap as hell wine on deals and thus that is what people expect. £10 is considered to be an expensive bottle. Hence you won't find a lot of what we love at home here.
I agree with dozer though, there is a gap in the market, and with few exceptions I won't pay what they want for table wine.

Dozer, there is a really good wine shop here in Clapham Junction (up on Northcote Rd) named Philglas and swiggot which specialises in Australian / NZ and Sth American wines.
They aren't super cheap but you can get all the non big label wines.
...rosemount cab sav is wine.
Fixed :D
Uther Pendragon and dozer are right, it's tough to find good Aussie wines here and the "vin ordinaire" we'd pay $5-$10 for back home costs upwards of $20 here. I tend to stick to the French and Italians - you can get some very good ones for £7-£12 a bottle, and even the cheaper Bulgarian merlots and Argentinian malbecs are pretty damn nice.

Fixed properly ;) (Actually I dont mind Reosemount for a 'I don't recognise any other brands on the list' standby)
The good sub $10 red mentioned by the colonel was Three Brothers Reunion Shiraz (https://www.nicks.com.au/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductId=474758) which I'd give a healthy 7/10, but for a few $$ more you can have Heartland Shiraz (https://www.nicks.com.au/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductId=474679) which I found even more agreeable.

Cab Sauv Cleanskin from BWS, code SM55, $6 very very very very very very drinkable. I had this at the start of the night and it wasn't an effort at all. I enjoyed a nice bottle of 'arrogant frog' the other day, a pretentious little wine from france, and specifically packagaed and marketed at the Australian amusing wine label market.
"2004 Arrogant Frog Ribet Red, Languedoc (France): $10
For the past few years, quirky brand names have been all the rage in the UK wine trade — like this cheeky little number, the Arrogant Frog. Originally designed for British supermarket shelves, a few containers of this cabernet merlot blend have been diverted to Australia by Woolworths and it's been leaping out the door of BWS stores across the country. Local wine drinkers are obviously relishing the wine's attractive dried herb and currant flavours, its elegant, savoury, southern French drinkability and its low price."
All said and done, it wasn't a bad drop, but Aussie reds have far more muscle (not to mention back hair :D)

my favourite all time white is a Viognier by Clonakilla wineries in canberra- a little expensive, but light and fruity, with just a hint of a bite. they are a boutique winery, and they sell out of their production before the next year is out.
that said, in a red i am in love with that punt road merlot from the yarra valley (from when we went wine tasting), and cant go past it for a bottle < $30.

Current recommendations for great value reds-
2002 Two Churches Shiraz (Barossa) ($12.79 if 6 or more from Vintage Cellars)
2002 Richmond Grove Barossa Shiraz ($15.99 if 6 or more from Vintage Cellars)
Both are great drops, the Two Churches is fantastic value.
I had a brilliant 2005 Wilson Vineyard Claire Valley riesling the other night, sounds like the Barossa had a great all round year for whites.

Goundrey reds I have found to be suprisingly smooth and flavoursome, they are $12-$16 depending where you go. Yellowtail reds are also fantastic for the price, similar to Goundrey.
If you go to liquorland or vintage cellars, they sometimes have in stock what are known as "cleanskins". They are usually (but not always) an unbranded wine, with a small white label stating the year and the variety. Sub ten dollar prices, not the worlds best but 80-85% as good as some wines in the $20-$30 price bracket...

Dear Hazza,
You have obviously taken offence to my previous assertion that you have no idea about wine further to that I'll add that I don't believe working as a checkout chick at a budget bottle shop qualifies you to either deride cassas opinion nor to suggest a negative comment on a highly awarded product mentioned by a vastly more experienced wine drinking zgeeker.
While I believe that its pretty clear that you don't know your terroir from your derriere I would like to give you the opportunity to prove me wrong. Rather than produce useless one word post or list the latest special from the local BWS store (if anyone will miss them just go to http://www.beerwinespirits.com.au/asp/index.asp?sid=5&page=currentspecials) how about you impart to us you knowledge on the major differences between old and new world wines or if that is a little daunting why not give us a run down on Australia's major wine producing regions focusing on their main varieties and characteristics as well as your personal recommendations from them.

My wine preferences tend to lean heavily towards Barossa shiraz- I like the body of warm climate shiraz and the balance that the Barossa tends to provide. Having said that, I will give anything a go including other full bodied reds, vic or tasmanian Pinot Noir (normal or rose), well chilled young yarra valley/new zealand whites in summer and aged whites when I can get my hands on a good one relatively inexpensively.

I was pretty keen to try this ones as the write-ups were good, region and varietal were right, and special price was good (was $21, down to $15). Unfortunately I was quite disappointed as it didn’t have the body I was expecting and in fact seemed to suggest a blend (there seemed to be a hint of Grenache, which I always puts me off). Pinot Noir / Chardonnay blends normally indicate that the wine is a sparkling white, or champagne.
they remove the skins off the pinot noir to remove the red colouring.
They don't remove them however for the pink/slamon sparklings, or remove some, but not all. Some pinks are also pink because of added strawberry, and pink colouring goes with strawberry flavour.

2004 Penny's Hill Red Dot Shiraz
Another great full bodied quaffer, not quite as balanced as a Barossa classic- a little more fruit driven with a little less spice, but much closer to my idea of balanced that the usual McLaren Vales. Great value at $13.99
2005 Three Brothers Reunion Shiraz
As a stand alone wine this seems to be great but its roughness becomes apparent when tasted amongst a selection of other wines. A good drop that should mellow with age and another recommended daily drinker at $9.99.
MAX POWER-
Andrew Garret used to do a good (but quite sweet) sparkling burgundy, not sure if you can still get it.
Fox creek winery does an excellent sparkling red called Vixen that is a high quality Mclaren Vale shiraz with bubbles.
d'Arenberg 'The Peppermint Paddock' Chambourcin is also worth a look

2004 Zonte's Footstep Cabernet Malbec
An amazingly vibrant wine, with all the fruit of a young Shiraz but none of the sharpness that is usually associated with them. Similar character to a Mclaren Vale or Margaret river Zinfandel and worthy for more than just the novelty value. $12.99
2005 Boundary Rider Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc
Not remarkable for being very good nor very bad so pretty much exactly as is expected- which is the remarkable bit because its only $9.99. A good mid-weight cab blend.

The moscato is a sweet quite light and slightly fizzy one. If that is the one, try BVE (Barossa Valley Estates) Gwertztraminer.
If its the orange muscat and flora, try Bethany late harvest

Stanton and Killeen make awesome fortifieds.
If you are going to go for a muscat or tokay, you have to get something from Rutherglen.
We went through there last year, the Morris stuff was good but the S&K in another league entirely.

I think full body is the term you are looking for:
A wine's body is described as light, medium, or full. So, when you are tasting a glass of wine, how can you tell which kind of body it has, and just what is body, anyway? Body is the weight of the wine on your palate. The best way to figure out any given wine's body is to think about the relative weights of skim milk, whole milk, and half-and-half. A light bodied wine will feel about as weighty as skim milk in your mouth; a medium-bodied wine will feel like whole milk, and a full-bodied wine will feel like half-an-half. Another way to think about this; Wine with a rich, complex, lingering flavor is considered full-bodied; one that is watery or lacking in body is considered light-bodied or thin; a medium-bodied wine ranks in between....

I lived in Canberra for 5 years and never touched a Canberra reigon (or South NSW) wine. I've since moved out and my boss and I decided that yesterday we'd drive from Canberra to Sydney "the long way" and visit a few wineries on the way. Two wines worth mentioning were:
I tried Clonakilla (http://www.clonakilla.com.au/) Shiraz Viognier 2006, a little young to drink now but man this wine is going to be huge after a little time (2-3yrs). Perhaps one of the best Shiraz blends I've ever tried. Up there with Glennock Creek (sp?) from SA. At $68 it was expensive, but IMO a bargain for what is a top quality wine and is easily on par if not better than the hyped Penfolds Grange. We were quite lucky that they had this opened. What is a bargain, is the little brother version "Hilltops" at only $24 a bottle - not quite as full but still bloody good - and will sell out within a month. I got quite a few of these!
A little further down, the Lark Hill (http://www.larkhillwine.com.au/) 2005 Chardonay is just how I like it. Everything but subtle - you get a nice hit of oak with a very smooth buttery finish. I wasn't overly impressed with their 'signature' Pinot Noir though.
(Interestingly both the clonakilla and lark hill wines are served on Qantas International First Class)
Also worth mentioning for all you Canberrans is the Kanberra (http://www.kamberra.com.au/) wines (just on NorthBorne ave near Epic Park). Have a try of their Viognier (can't remember the year). At $15 a pop its a bargain and a very nice wine which will easily complement any sea food. Got a few of these too.

More true rewards of marriage became apparent last weekend, when we spent our 1st anniversary weekend in the Yarra Valley. Whilst the region is not renowned for its shiraz, the offerings from Punt Road and St Huberts rival the better know regions in quality rather than characteristics. If your tastes stretch to cold climate Cabernets, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Semillon or sophisticated dessert wines, the Yarra Valley is the place for you. Recommendations for Yarrawood for their Verdelho, Allinda for their double picked Riesling, Sticks ‘Sticky’ (Reisling/Semillon) and Rochford for their Caberbet/Merlot.

I don’t know how specifically you can dictate the style, but is worth a look in. In the mean time try some Berringer Estates White Zinfandel (its actually a rose), is much more of a quaffer than the muscato but fits the bill of lowish alcohol (10%), sweet and fruity...and its under $10 (and decidedly less subtle then the more expensive ones)

A winery called kellermeister around the corner from me has made a brand of chocolate Port called Sable. At $15 a bottle, I'm going to pick up a couple at my next convenience.

In my excitement of getting some oysters brought up from Melbourne, I cracked open one of our '97 Tyrrells Vat 1 Semillion.
I last had this about two years ago and it was awesome but alas, it seemed flat at the moment and to be honest, I was disappointed. It seemed appropriate to celebrate a tenth anniversary with a wine of the same vintage.
I've read that this should continue to develop well until '09 - maybe I just picked a period when it was a bit flat and flabby.
Oh well, I'll try again in '09 and '10.
I think you mean Rockford's "Basket Press".
Yeah thats it. I knew it was something like that. it is excellent. One of my friends gets a case every year and is aging it in his celler. he is educating me on the finer side of wine.

OH MY GOD
I am drinking the last bottle of the 12 I got from the two hands winery
(10 bottles of the moscato, 1 bottle of reisling, and this last one is the cane cut semillon)
So...
WOW
Its so... different from every other type of wine I've tried.
http://www.twohandswines.com/sitePages/winedetail.asp?ItemID=86&WId=23
I recommend it to anyone
But its sort of like a sticky wine... which I wasn't expecting.
This is also the most accurate description of how it tastes ever
olden in colour, it has an intensely perfumed nose of star jasmine, sweet musk and glace fruits. At first, a rush of tropical fruits and a hint of sweet spice, these give way to dense stone fruit characters. The mouthfeel is velvety then finishes like cool tea; with refreshing acidity and persistence.
I have a favourite brand of wine now, and I'm looking forward to my first new pay packet to buy some more.

But i love the taste of it nonetheless.

Will review when it arrives.
Havent had grange for a few years (last one was an 86 or so I think)
The father in law has a few of multiple vintages in the cellar so will have to wait till he cracks one to try- fucked if im going to fork-out $1/2K for a bottle.
18%? thought it was impossible to get above 14% with fermantation
Me too, although I seem to recall some types of yeast can survive higher concentrations, and evaporation through the barrel can have an effect.

My Wine Selectors Taste of Australia Red Dozen (http://www.wineselectors.com.au/wineplans.asp?planid=2) arrived last week and so far I have only tried the hunter ones (hunter reds are typically crap so I wanted to try them before the money back offer ran out) and was pleasantly surprised. I will bring a few others to and do a 'sampling' for Saturday.
/edit the intro dozen has changed already, mine had a few different ones to that list

I had a 25 year old bottle of Chateau Malescot St-Exupéry (Margaux) (http://www.malescot.com/) that my old man had been cellaring for, well 25 years and was undoubtly the best wine I have ever tried. The 1982 vintage in the region is one of the best so I was quite lucky in that regard. The restaurant where i took this to had a 2001 vintage for $800......I can only guess what the 82 was worth. I'm quite lucky to have another bottle at home!
I also had a bottle of 1982 Stony Vinyard (now Domaine A) Shiraz from Tassie. Although Tassie isn't a big Shiraz area, 25 years of age certainly did wonders - and this was quite good but in a very different way to the bordeaux.

Very cool, I don’t get much opportunity to sample the old world wines, and never anything of that age.
Had anything australian to compare it with in terms of body and palette characteristics?

I've had a few reds which I've discovered I quite enjoy.
I tried one of those annies lane ones, was very nice
I tried the brown brothers zibbo also very very nice (almost as good as the two hands moscato)

No, as it was a french bordeaux there really isn't any true comparison - and I haven't tried many wines at that age/level!!

Well we tried this one on Saturday night and it was...interesting.
Very ripe and sweet, thick and full, but whilst the alcohol content is very high you don’t get any impressing of it being overdone from either the palate nor the nose. I didn’t notice much of the spice or other complexities suggested in the tasting notes, but is was still a great wine.
Is it worth $35? Yeah, but I don’t know that Ill be buying much more of it.

Yes and no, its sweet (for a full blown red) and ripe so that’s a plus, the alcohol not very prominent so another plus. It is 18% though, that can put you on your arse if you’re drinking it like a light white.
Find a bottle of Connor Park Durif (its cheaper) and have it on a cold night with a stew, shanks or a heavy spaghetti bolognaise. If you like it a lot get some Warrabilla.
I just got a box of the Warrabilla durif/shiraz/cab blend cleanskins.

OK i got a quick heads up, at the BWS in Roseville they are CLEARING out the Bordeux room, what this means is IMPORTED FRENCH wines are DRASTICALLY reduced by up to 40%, also there is some old penfolds shit like grange magnums, all heavily reduced! If you want head up to the corner of Hill and Lord st at Roseville and talk to Dan or Trent. There is currently a 20% of all wine sale as well which means if you buy one of these bordeux, margaux, penfolds, D'yquem, Cheatuenuf De pape and like 5 other cheap wines, you will get it for like 60% off! its a fucking joke.
theres a 1984 Grange Hermitage magnum in a box set with a $1500 discount! and then if you buy any 5 other wines it will be more than half price!!!

2005 DSC Cleanskin.
Best cleanskin ever.
After enjoying the Parola's Limited Release Durif but ultimately casting out due to price, I got a box of the Durif/Shiraz/Cabernet blend cleanskin and it gets both thumbs up. It still sweet, ripe, full and very purple (but not as much so as the straight Durif), it’s also but a little more complex. If you like a big red that matches hearty winter fair get into this one, at $10 ($11 delivered) a bottle it’s unbeatable.

Best cleanskin ever...
I'm also currently enjoying an amazing cleanskin, the only one that hasn't disapointed since the cases that came back from Foggo's and Penny's Hill in the McLaren Vale early last year.
Dan Furphy's currently have a McLaren Vale 2005 cab sav / cab franc / merlot cleanskin labeled as 'private bin' for the bargain price of $6.90.
We purchased one on Saturday to cook with and prompty went back to get a whole case.
'tis very much to my taste and I'm actually going to go out on a limb and guess that it is a Ben Riggs wine.
I'm debating going back and getting a second case, it makes an awesomely good value every day drinker.

The missus and I went to Two Hands cellars for a tasting today. Just whites.
They've rolled over to the next vintage forthe Brilliant Disguise Moscato, which to me is far superior to the last. Might be relevant to Sapia's interests.
Last night I tried a bottle of STONELEIGH Sauvignon Blanc, from the Malborough region in New Zealand.
It was a lot friutier than I was expecting. I have a bottle of Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc from the same region that I will likely try tonight or tomorrow.
