I started a Whisk(e)y appreciation thread earlier in the year, but it was fairly general and covered all sorts of them... I proclaim this thread to be dedicated to the appreciation of Single Malts only (as they are my favourite).

I recently acquired a bottle of Glenfiddich 18 year old Ancient Reserve, which is definitely the most expensive bottle of alcohol I've ever owned. I haven't tasted it yet, but it did motivate me to finish off the bottle of 15 year old Solera Reserve I have in the cabinet. I had a glass last night and by god it was the best glass of whiskey I dare say I've ever had. I've already drunk 9/10 of the bottle and I can't believe it's never tasted like this before. All the subtle notes of apples and dried wood (that I read about in the review but had previously been unable to detect) came through on the nose and it was just magic.

Many years ago I managed to acquire a bottle of Glenmorangie 18y.o. Single Malt Fine Scotch Whisky. And was it ever fine it shat all over the 8 and 12 year old single malts I had been drinking to that time. That particular bottle is drunk now...how I miss her!

On another note Glenfiddich whilst the most popular single malt Whisky outside scotland it is considered a cooking grade scotch by the scottish.

Glenmorangie is the most popular single malt within Scotland.

(These stats may have changed as I was made aware of these tidbits a few years ago now)

Surely you can't mean ALL Glenfiddich scotch... they've got malts that go for tens of thousands of dollars.

It is pretty touristy... not a lot of what they make is sold in Scotland. However, if you like it drink it. Further to that their distillery tour kicks arese.

Glenfiddich 15 yo Solara reserve is amongst the best I have ever had... not to say the best had by 3 blind folded judges with 100 years of malt experience between them, but possibly my personal favourite from Speyside.

The four malts I'm drinking the most of these days are Laphroig, Talisker, Macallan and Aberlour - I can usually find one of them on special at the supermarket. I also rather like Glenmorangie, Balvennie and Oban (I've visited then Oban distillery in Scotland).

Ah ok.. their stock is the 12 year old (the green one). I've tasted it before, and the 15 year old is a million times better.

Got a litre bottle of the 18 year old Glenfiddich from some rellies travelling overseas last year. Have to say I like the 15 year old a lot better.

However, I had a glass of Laphroaig last night. Got it served on the rocks with a little bit of water on the side to add. Best single malt I've had yet, period.

The Laphroaig is hardcore when you have it neat. It has such a peaty taste and a real kick to it - good tucker I say! I have a bottle of Glenlivet 12YO, which comes on sale periodically for around $45-50 a bottle (usually around Christmas too, which is nice) and I do like that.

I have a vested interest in Laphroaig because I'm a landowner (http://www.niksula.hut.fi/~jkaarlas/misc/tontti.jpg). Of the Islay malts many also like Lagavulin next door. Outside Islay Glenkinchie is sort of smooth whereas Santori wasn't too exciting.

I have 21 feet of Islay.
I'm hoping that when I die they'll give it to me three by seven and bury me there.
