I challenge you to create something new using the 3 dimensions, something that no-one has ever seen in these forums.
I will start by showing you these pictures I created using 3dsMAX.

Not in these forums, maybe in #zgeek. Anyway they were the old versions, those are new improved ones.

I did a quick render of my friend's pencil and paper, fat-stick-figureish comic superhero, super oscar, and yes, he's supposed to look cartoony. as mentioned before, he's a comic charachter.
In other news, i hate blender... i should get 3DSMax

Ok well she is finally done! My 3D character is being rendered as i type. only 57 minutes left on a 7 second animation. Damn my huge textures.
i cant upload the movie cus, well, its about 60 megs. no shit. like i said. HUGE textures.
I'll put up some stills later tonight.

I think the angle between it and the lighter itself is a bit wrong, or the angles on the side edges are wrong. It just looks to me like the top has been done as a rotated distortion of a "ring".
But anyway... I couldn't possibly produce anything anywhere near as good as that.

Your chessboard is setup wrong:
Bottom left corner from white's perspective is always black.
This means the queens are on the wrong coloured squares. Fix the first and the second is fixed :p

This might be of interest to 3D modellers.
http://www.pandromeda.com/page/products/
They make fractal modelling programs.
I've been going through their stills gallery (http://www.pandromeda.com/page/galleries). In most cases I prefer Terragen's "look", but its not bad.
They've also got a program for generating animations.
Unfortunately the demo can't be used to save. :(

Cool Cube Tutorial
1. Draw a 2d square.
2. Draw another 2d square overlapping the 1st one.
3. Connect the corners of square 2 with the adjecect coreners of square one.
4. Put some clouds in and sky in the background.
As you can see, I only got to step 3.

Anyway, this morning i was watching a Zoids episode and got inspired and started designing my own. After all, who wouldn't want to design thier own giant robot.
So after many hours of drawing, scribbling, erasing and swearing i had a picture i was happy with and started modelling it.

It is blurry/shaking because there is a special "clouds sphere" which the athmosphere is kind of "reflecting" so you see two layers of clouds........"which is nice". (I'll try to fix it soon)

DrDivad I can see you been visiting the tutorials section at Niklas Industries (http://www.niklasindustries.com/) :)

Uhh, when I can get the motivation to do some more :(
As I said, I have a real problem with creating unfinished models. The gasmask is the most recent thing I've done (last weekend) and has probably the highest chance of being completed into a character. We'll see how it goes.
I'll post some more stuff when I get home, including a cool-looking head of a creature/character known only as "Chudman"

I can NOT get the surface water to look nice, maybe i'm too tired, and i'm certainly not happy with it, but it's still a work in progress, i used this stupid angle to hide the fact that the pool has no outside to the bottom section, this would normally be hidden by the ground, which isn't there

Firstly, behold "CHUDMAN!" This was a 'realising concepts' test, where I got my friend to draw front and side pics, and To see If I could model it. The result is pretty close.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~josh.y/3d/chudman.jpg
As I said, I usually don't finish pics, but this ones probably the only thing I could really call finished, only because it was pretty quick and easy to do.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~josh.y/3d/electronhair.jpg
The others aren't too special, so I'll link to them. Here's one alot of you ZGeek'ers will recognise... or maybe not :p

For a simply object like this, it might look better with a reflection map. Here's a simple one I use for a standard chrome look (http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~joshua.y/forumpic/environment.jpg). If you want to ray trace reflections for more realism, then take a few mins to find a suitable HDRI image to use as an environment map (see my gas mask above.) I also think the distortion on the mirror is off-putting. Personally, I'd just make the mirrors reflection a little blurred.

Seeing as though this thread has been resurrected, here's a couple of new ones (and one old one) from me.
After seeing Urban's sink picture, it inspired me to model the vanity in my house. This is just a few hours of modelling... so no textures as yet; I'm still not happy with the actual shape of the basin, either.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~josh.y/3d/vanity.jpg
Secondly, this is just a basic chimp I modelled at work using the free (and very cool) Wings 3D (http://www.wings3d.com/) program. If your looking to get into poly modelling for free, it's worth a look. Anyway, here's the pic, with basic colours.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~josh.y/3d/chimp.jpg
Finally, seeing this Bryce stuff reminded me of my old Bryce days. This was the last thing I did in Bryce before I decided primitives and boolean operations weren't going to be enough for me.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~josh.y/3d/burger.jpg

Yeah I might give it another shot... but not today. I have started working on a different scene now.
Also, I would like to ask people to fix their broken links if possible, it would make this thread much cleaner.

Thread necromancy time...
I've been a lazy bastich as of late, but instead of making excuses, I'll just post something.
Im working on a render of a spacecraft entitled "Sonic Blue," sketched out by a friend, Zeica.
The original sketch:

Heres some incomplete progress pics (took some artistic licensing in places to make up for inconsistancies between views in sketch, i'll make it more accurate later):

Thats it for now... workin to complete this by monday or so...

It's a shame that despite the initial post in this thread...I challenge you to create something new using the 3 dimensions, something that no-one has ever seen in these forums.... there are so many of these throughout the entire thread...

edit: and on a side note, I'll be using .txt files formatted as images to deal with my host... they display fine on IE... if theres a problem on another browser lemme know, and I'll take care of it... or attach it or somethin. *shrugs*
edit2: fixin my broken links as I go, lrmecha2.jpg no longer exists on my HD, so i'll have to dig it off a backup CD later

Whoa, that's pretty awesome.
The exhaust sticking out the rear end looks weird though. It looks like it's pointing down too much, not in line with the body of the ship. Unless it's a cone and the fins are blocking the view?

Ive spent quite a bit of today workin to finish up, and I actually have, woo. All the modeling, texturing, painting, etc is done. All thats left to do now is to run the final renders, so I'll post the pics as my computer kicks em out.
For now have a side view, I need sleep, i'll eat some CPU cylces and churn out the rest when I wake up.

Too lazy to find all the seperate pics, so here's the final print version.
Last names have obviously been x'd out just cause I dont like spamming it all over the place, and I was too lazy to edit "Zeica" and "Turtle Wrangler" in instead of our real names as on the print...
anywho, here it is, I sized it down to 1/3rd original size to avoid all the excess scrolling andwhatnot:

Hey Urban good stuff. I got a bundle of softwear from a friend who had an older version of 3dsmax, I think it was 3. Anyway I got the program too, but I know nothing about it. I'm pretty proficiant in photoshop, and wanna start dinking around with max. I taught myself on photoshop just by messing around, and that technique isn't working on max. So do you know any sites or anything that can give me some rudementary knowedlge of it? I wanan make some sweet 3d stuff!

I'm glad you asked. http://www.3dlinks.com/ is a great site for tutorials and I suggest you start from a very simple thing that is an apple: Apple tutorial (http://www.3dlinks.com/tutorial.cfm?tutorial=max/apple&title=Creating%20a%20realistic%20apple%20using%20o nly%20procedural%20textures).
After you've done that try making this orange (http://www.hallofheads.com/tutorials/tut2.htm). Then there's www.3dcafe.com that offers lots of basic tutorials, these should get you started. Oh by the way, you should try to acquire 3DS Max 5,6 or 7.

Lightwave 3D is where it's at! Harder than max, but more powerful. Great for cars, spaceships, yadda yadda yadda. Look for Lightwave in Firefox and the movie of the same series Serenity, those M&M's ads, Children of Dune, Sin City...
Lightwave is fantastic for Sci-Fi and stuff where the visual elements are extremely important and stuff like character animation is less critical. For the amateur just wanting to play around, it's awesome because you'll get far more satisfying renders.
If you're developing for games, web design, print media (though personally I'd use Lightwave depending on the application), did I mention games, then you can't go past 3DSMax. It's far simpler, tends to be a bit more efficient, in my opinion sacrificing features and quality for smaller, neater meshes which is what makes it so fantastic for game developers. With some knowledge of the software and good texturing you can easily overcome the drawbacks. Some people have tried others (incl Lightwave) and typically the games are clunkier and the 3D models don't sit in the game so well.
Maya is the big dog supposedly, personally I rate Lightwave 3D over it (can you tell I like Lightwave? :P) but for Character modelling and rendering, rendered composition, general VFX, Fluid dynamics, physical simulation of fabrics and materials, then Maya seems to be the king. Most expensive and most complicated of the big 3 but if those are the things you're after, it's what you use.
I still have yet to delve into Maya, need to dig up a copy, but it seems definately worth learning the basics in some other 3D modeler/animator before attempting Maya...

Look for Lightwave in Firefox and the movie of the same series Serenity, those M&M's ads, Children of Dune, Sin City... The Dune miniseries' effects were not very impressive if you ask me. They looked very choppy and I'm pretty sure 3DS Max is used in more movies than Lightwave. I would say that how powerful the program is, is in the hands of the user. Both programs can create photorealistic images and animations from what I've seen. Max is easy to use and has more stuff than Lightwave. Apparently you have to get separate hair generators and body dynamics plugins for Lightwave, this is not necessary in 3DS Max. For Max you can get a very powerful renderer (Splutterfish Brazil) which is the best renderer I've used. When I used lightwave it had 2 programs (WTF?) that had to be used if I remember correctly. It was annoying to swap between two programs all the time.

There's many rendered CGI sequences and stills out there that are near impossible to tell which program made them, but I can often pick out the Lightwave ones. THat's probably not what the developer wants to hear but in all those cases I've thought "hey that CGI rocks, and I think it's Lightwave", I look it up and sure enough.
Inline with my previous post I don't beleive Lightwave is the ideal choice for things that need hair and the latest version of it's IK system is supposedly top-notch.
The point of the two programs is because you're supposed to be able to model in one and then you can render in something completely different if you want, or you can model in the program of your choice and animate in Lightwave's Layout.
What it comes down to is Lightwave clicks for me, and feels the best, probably because I learned on it, and it's Amiga roots are familiar to me. Max just feels I dunno, 'crusty' and unintuitive to me, though there's thousands of people out there who disagree :)

Hehe, that is funny because I can pick the lightwave and max ones too. It is usually hard to start using another program if you're used to something else. I've tried several programs but they fill me with bah.
Other news: I recently got a job from a loghouse company that wants me to make 3D models of their loghouses for their catalogues.

Urban: The only way I can think of doing it is by you moving over to Lightwave 3D as it uses Procedural textures and image maps all in one texturing process... easy to use (relatively) compared to 3ds... but then again, it all comes down to what you're used to i guess
For most of my texturing, I use the lightwave procedurals to give depth, and create my own alpha channels, bumps, and other maps... this is arduous at times, but there's a lot you can accomplish with images.google.com :D

Nicely done Vantastic, I'm glad I still inspire someone. You could do a wicked planet with that glowing wall and floor material, similar to the planet of doom I made once.
Here is a sauna I made for a company that makes loghouses. Since I suck at boxmodeling et cetera all of the logs are separate as are the doors and windows and all the boards used on the roof. I still need a better material for the roof and doors but those will do for now. The last picture with the grass I made for my own amusement. Its a little boring and the trees are standard max trees. The grass I made using the hair and fur modifier with the hair count of one million. Default scanline renderer was used to render these images, no advanced mumbo jumbo.

This one took me a few hours to render. The scene is quite simple, standard boxes have been used in most of the models with a few cylinders and a couple of a little more complicated models here and there. The plant model is a standard Max plant with my own materials applied to it, same with the teapot on the shelf. As the more astute of you may have noticed the whole room is rather empty, I'm just too damn lazy to model lots of different objects but I may do that later if I re-render that scene :). Textures are all lowres and resized properly with the UVW map modifiers. For lighting I used 6 VRay lights and one standard directional light with different multipliers and values for the outside lights. Thats about it, not much I can say about this boring interior.
I realize there are tons of these interiors on the internet but I had a moment of unimaginativeness and this idea was simple enough to do. Questions, opinions, thoughts?
P.S. Vardsy did you get that high res rubiks cube?
http://www.zgeek.com/forum/gallery/files/4/9/2/interior.jpg
Edit: Fuck, I just noticed one of the chairs is floating in the air perkele! Fucking max throws objects around a bit sometimes if they're grouped and you open another scene with different scale units and then reopen another.

Looks great except for the room looking like a V shape overall. In that sense the perspective seems a bit out, kind of like ... its viewed from the output end of a security camera with a fisheye lens. If it were more up and down it would look more real.
Urban3300
05-05-2007, 09:00 PM
Problem with that, sagit, is that if I want all of that in the picture I have to use custom camera lens and tweak the perspective. I don't think it looks like a fisheye though. That and you notice things like this after you have rendered the picture and it took me hours to render that so I cbf fixing little things.
In other news one of my loghouse renders ended up in a loghouse catalogue, which is nice, I had to modify the colors a bit for the catalogue though but it is the same model that I posted earlier here.
