I recently got a new work computer that doesn't chug when I have dashboard enabled....
So I've started playing with widgets.
I've got a livejournal updater widget, i've got a wikipedia widget (which is really handy), I've got a neat little widget that tells me the current temperature at observatory hill in sydney.
I NEED MORE!
They're so cute, and addictive and cute.
and GADGETY!

LOL I was even considering turning to the 'dark side' for these and purchasing a Powerbook. I was told to wait till they release the Intel based units... sounds like sage advice
Then again.... widgets are very funky indeed *taps chin*

I use widgets on my Windows PC
http://www.konfabulator.com/
I currently have running on my desktop a
Google search bar
Calendar
CPU, Memory, Network Monitor
and this sweet kick ass Retro Clock
You can get shitloads from the website - There is even a Penny Arcade widget that updates the latest Penny hilarity straight to the desktop.
I love Widgetry

I had a look at the site (I have never seen this before). It looks cool, but are there any widgets that people find particularly useful?

Redman thast not a skin, hes using a pc :) We get widgets too, heh.
konfabulator/samurize is very purdy. I like the one that puts the tv guide on your desktop. Someone good enough at scripting in Samurize could write a zgeek threads reader (I believe there was one for OCAU).

I don't understand making your PC look like a mac (nor posting it in a mac forum, want a medal?)... I run windows yes, but I respect the mac OS. In fact, I'd love a 2nd terminal that ran OS X. I think widgets are great, and anyone who hacks it to bring it to PC is merely supporting the idea that mac OS is far superior to Windows (bring on vista and watch it fail like XP).
of all the widgets I see use in, the recipe book is the biggest (loving cooking and all). The conversion tables are great for Rascuache, seeing as she has trouble with our farenheit oven.
The weather and google widgets are fine, but nothing new. I haven't seen many because Ras hasn't installed that many, however I can see the use of widgets.

Well Microsoft has had their Digital Dashboard at least for 5 years now and Firefox has extensions so the concept certainly isn't new. I don't really see how it would prove Mac's superiority. In fact according to some sources the first Dashboard was developed by HP to customize Windows desktops.
The idea of information feeds and little tools like that is great, no matter what the platform or what they are called.

ummm... since when has microsoft had anything as complex as widgets? It was merely an addition to Outlook, not part of the OS, and it was always contained within Outlook. So, effectively, you had to load up outlooks bulky code to run it. I have seen references to the HP dashboard, but it seems like it fizzled out due to lack of functionality and support.
In contrast, the widget dashboard is incorporated into the OS, fully functional and massively supported by mac users. The mere suggestion that the Mac OS dashboard be converted to Windows is a clear sign of catchup.
Information feeds are different to widgets, they don't just do that at all. Maybe a quick use of Tiger would enlighten you to the advantages of widgets. maybe not, but it's worth a try.

Would you like the thread to be split between Mac and PC widgets or serve as a universal widget praising vehicle? There's widgets (for Konfabulator) that work on Mac and Windows. I could see that if someone tells about a useful widget on either platform the heathens on the other platform might be inspired to find a similar tool.

Widgets are just mini html progs. nothing that complex. I mangled around with them in the early days. made one that was prettymuch a micro-safari under the dash. Here's a link to how it's designed. (http://developer.apple.com/macosx/dashboard.html)
It's odd.... windows had active desktop forever..... pretty much the same thing for apple. I'm suprised they never pushed for multimedia desktops. But big props to apple cause they really are masters of promoting their developments.
Widgets are nice...... good fuctionallity, low resources really. Just micro webpages. What I think is nice now it the expansion now. Linux runs it, now windows.. good stuff.
Between Konfabulator/Samurize and the stuff from Stardock (mainly ObjectDock and WindowBlinds) you can set your PC to look and perform like any operating system you want - especially Macs. And wigetizing your PC is so much cooler than on a Mac anyways.
Widget the world watcher, woooah. Widget the world WATCHEEER!

i'm using the yahoo weather widget. You can get almost all major cities in the world with it by using its search location feature. Im not sure where exactly their weather info comes from but i still use it for now. If you find the BOM one, post a link here, i would like that ;)

Is that the ex-konfabulator yahoo widget? If so then the info comes from www.weather.com, if you look it even uses the same codes for each corresponding place. I have been seriously tossing up wether to upgrade my konfabulator or still use 2.1 considering that yahoo bought them out.

Im not sure antz, i downloaded konfabulator from the website last week so its the 2nd newest one so far (v3.0). The yahoo weather widget came with konfabulator. I think it runs off yahoo's weather section.
Nah, its still the same old Konfabulator (and you might want to think about updating - depending on wether you got it, v3.0.1 or something is out now to fix some bugs people were having) and that used the weather.com (the widget is slightly misleading - if you click on the info button it has all this yahoo stuff, but they forgot to take away the weather.com logo in the bottom right corner of it.

Yeah I suspected the BBC ones wouldnt work outside of the UK, the streams from their websites dont. Having said that, it might just be that you need real player (or real alternative) installed?

For those of you on iinet or ozemail you may be familiar with iiKON (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/index.cfm?a=wiki&tag=iiKON_Widget) by mce (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-user.cfm?id=2044) which is a sweet widget used to display your volume usage, ip address, reset date etc on your desktop.
Even though i love this piece of software and want to make babies to it's author I had 2 problems with it. Firstly, the colour scheme was hard for me to see cos i am colour blind as fuck. Secondly, at my screen res it was too small to see from my couch.
Soooooooooooo.... with absolutely no skills at all I bring you my first attempt at fucksinating with someone else's hard work to bastardise it to my own ends and i present to you iiKON.mod completely fucked by me with absolutely no authority or permission given by the tallented bastard who actually wrote it (http://members.iinet.net.au/~mdensley/iiKON.mod.widget)... but i like it.. in fact i think it's rather sexy :pclove:
