So now that its holidays Iv had a chance to break out my Ubuntu cd's and fire her up (version 5.10)

Having fun with it thusfar, however I have one little problem. Media !

How the hell do I play mpegs, mp3s etc on it ?

I have googled and found a few places that offer links to codecs and files, however the damn things were dead, or didnt work.

I dunno what im doing wrong, but a combination of "not many resources" and "noob me" = no porn on ubuntu ? omg ! :sperm:

Anyway thanks for reading the thread guys.

There's Totem and XMMS..... those are usually stock on Ubuntu. I did toss in VLC as my media to kinda merge in with Firefox. Seemed to act more pleasing for me.

Good thing to do is jump on into synaptic package manager, do a search for media stuff. Just a nice "mp3 player" or "DVD" and stuff. What I really like about the package manager is how it gives a "preferred" option.

Hope that helps a bit:)

Well the twin video standards are xine and mplayer, xine is in ubuntu as xine-ui, but you will probably have to find an alternative apt source for mplayer. VLC is handy in many ways still, because you can deal with buggy files better than the other players. XMMS is a must for a great range of sound formats (there are plenty of packaged encoders also), and mikmod for the various MOD formats. Mplayer, BTW is not just for DVD's. In combination with the fantastic Mplayer Plugin (http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/) for Firefox, you can take care of a LOT of web media, especially for Windows Media and Realplay formats. I still use the Linux Realplay though, and the realplayer metapackage will help you there.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your input.

I installed xine as suggested, works a treat.

Now If i could only stop myself always trying to use "windows key + d" to return to the desktop..
