So, if you've been following the news you'll know that our government has recently strengthened the already disgraceful sedition laws and are now moving to disenfranchise full time prisoners.

It is my opinion that these moves go against everything I thought our country, as a democracy, stood for. I think it is appalling that we now have a secret police system, where the state can, for all intents and purposes, kidnap you for no reason and without any oversite keep you locked up for two weeks. It is an absolute disgrace that many forms of legitimate protest or dissent are now criminalized under broad, draconian laws. Also, I think the move to disenfranchise _any_ segment of the community starts us down a very slippery slope.

My question is: what can I legally do to make my opposition to this legislation known? Is there any effective means of changing the laws that have already been implemented, or stopping the proposed legislation that will, undoubtably, become law in a very short time?

Do we have to just sit and wait for the next election, hope people come to their senses and vote the Liberals out, and hope the next bunch of fuckwits do anything better?

This is absolute bullshit.

Only thing I can think of is to write to the Queen, telling her what's happening in the colony and could she please interveen?

Her reply would be

"Dear moonbuggy

We are not amused

Love

The Queen"

I agree. It is a very bad thing for the country. All to assuage the public's paranoia of terrorists.

Well so now its in why hasn't it been used to fuck up the media in the current crap about the lebs and the surfies. Whilst I sort of agree with it I have a lot of reservations that there hasn't been enough checks in place to ensure it doesn't get abused. IMHO they should scrap it and go back to the drawing board.

I to agree with you rasputin

I find it odd that the law hasn't been abused.

Is it possible that they aren't going to abuse it???

The thing about these laws that scares me is that they are open to abuse. I don't really believe that John Howard et al are trying to set up a fascist dictatorship, but these laws make it all the easier for someone else to come along in 10 years time and do just that. I fear that if you create a dictator shaped hole, a dictator will come along to fill it.
