After reading this article: http://www.theage.com.au/news/breaking/torvalds-wades-into-desktop-debate/2005/12/14/1134500890694.html

I got to wondering. Do you guys use KDE or Gnome ?

Because Im very, very much a unix noob, Im using the default Gnome that comes with Ubuntu 5.10.

Is KDE Better ?
What Distro that comes with KDE would be good for a noob like me ?

I definately prefer KDE. I switched when gnome went to the spatial browser.
KDE is the default window manager for Suse, a very good noob distro.

KDE.

I used to use Gnome back in the day (RedHat 6.2) until the day I found out how much cool shit KDE could do (SuSE 8.1).

The most recent versions of Gnome can do much the same stuff, but I'm used to KDE now.

kubuntu is the most stable KDE platform I've ever used. I got so sick of the half-assed support from the Gnome-biased Debian maintainers, being forced to go to alternate apt repositories to get up to date KDE that it's what tipped me over the edge to a new distro. I have some issues with the general OS, but KDE has never faltered for me and that's after years of putting up with the buggy Debian versions.

I've programmed GTK/Gnome since the very early days. GTK is bad enough but at least its nominally stable. Gnome is a complete joke. It's half-assed OO that is a nightmare to keep consistent and the developers have acquired a tunnel-vision disturbingly like the last years of Xfree86. Making a user-focussed UI is hard enough without having inconsistent interfaces, design philosophies, and plain bad execution. It isn't worth my time as a user or developer.

I should add that I respect Havoc Pennington very much as I've had contact on mailing-lists with him over a long period, and his energy and concern for feedback is astonishing. And sadly unique :(

Thanks for the input guys, Iv switched to Kubuntu KDE. Was very happy to see how easy it was to sudo install it.

So far so good. Of course, thats a 1 hour appraisal.. =-)

Give me Gentoo and terminal any day of the week. Oh, and maybe WindowMaker to tie it all together :)
