Since we now have a Food & Drink subforum, it is probably time to start a mixed drinks thread to share recipes and advice on this always arcane subject.

I figured the best way to start, given the season, is with a holiday drink that is pretty common in south Louisiana but, keeping in mind the prevelance of folks from the Southern hemisphere, one that will taste right dandy in the summertime as well.

Red Rooster Christmas Drink

1 1/2 quarts cranberry juice cocktail
1 6-oz can frozen orange juice concentrate, defrosted
2 cups vodka

Mix all of the ingredients together in a large plastic container and put it in the freezer overnight. Due to the alcohol content, it won't completely freeze but it will have a slushy consistency. Pour into a punchbowl and dive in.

under just about any definition i can find, that is not egg nog. i have had this concoction served in shot glass boilermaker style in a half pint of guinness. it tasted a little like chocolate milk but not in a bad way. the bar called it an "irish car bomb" and it hit you like one about fifteen minutes later.

egg nog, on the other hand, almost always calls for milk or cream. interestingly when it first popped up in the late 1600s in the Norfolk and Suffolk area of England, it was referred to as a strong beer. in the 1800s it has transformed into "the white and yolk of eggs stirred with hot beer, cider, wine and spirits."

here is a classic and rather simple recipe for those with an urge to try it out.

1 jigger whiskey (dealers choice. brandy or rum can be used as well)
1 raw egg
1 cup thin cream
1 spoonfull sugar

mix in a barglass with fine ice and shake well. strain into a thin glass and grate nutmeg on top.

You can also use coconut milk in eggnog. By the way what is in cranberry juice cocktail other than cranberry juice?

got me. you need to ask the ocean's spray folks.

but the classic cocktail has typically been defined as a mixed drink that uses bitters. there is a robust debate over the etymology of the term this definition of the drink is pretty well accepted despite the fact the term is used loosely to refer to any mixed mixed drink served in a tall glass.

the archtypical cocktail is the Old Fashoned which is more of a before dinner drink than the heavier and more ornate after dinner offerings.

1 lump sugar
2 dashes angostura bitters
1 jigger whisky (purists prefer rye)
1 small chunk pineapple (i consider this optional)
1 slice orange
2 maraschino cherries.
1 piece lemon peel

drop the sugar and the bitters into a heavy bar glass and let saturate. add the cherry, orange and pineapple and crush with a spoon. add whisky and a couple of cubes of ice and stir with a spoon. twist the slice of lemon peel over all and serve.

Acid Banana
1/2 shot Pisang Ambon
1/2 shot Sour Apple Liqueur
1 shot grapefruit juice
Sprite or 7up

Build in a highball glass.
Top with Sprite/7up and flaked ice.
Decorate with a slice of orange.

Green Heaven
10 ml vodka
20-30 ml Pisang Ambon liqueur
Sprite or 7up

Build in a highball glass packed with ice.
Fill up with Sprite or 7up.

Personally I prefer a bit more vodka and 30 ml of Pisang Ambon is definitely the maximum. If you put more the banana taste is too strong and ruins the drink.

American Dream

20 ml Jim Beam Bourbon
10 ml Sour Apple Liqueur
Schweppes Shizen or Sprite/7up

Build in a highball glass packed with ice.
Fill up with the soda and decorate with a slice of orange.

I used Jack Daniels as I had no JB available but it seems to do the trick.

P2

1 oz vanilla vodka
1 oz Sour Apple Liqueur
1 squeezed lime
7up/Sprite

Build in a highball glass packed with ice.
Decorate by pressing the lime wedges into the drink. Add a twig of mint on top.

Visit Peru and you must have a Pisco Sour. They are extraordinarily proud of this, the national drink, and waste no opportunity to prepare it. Pisco is a fortified white wine produced here - note that because it ranges between 30 and 50 percent alcohol by volume not 14 percent like regular wine. It will knock you on your ass if you don't watch out.

The real key to getting the taste right is getting the lime right. Roses Lime Juice will not work for this drink. Peruvian limes are smaller and have a much much higher acid content than normal limes. We don't have a real equivilant in the states but Key limes come pretty close.

Pisco Sour
Ingredients

2 oz Pisco
1 oz key lime juice
1 oz simple syrup (see below)
1 egg white
Ice
Angostura Bitters

Mix the key lime juice and the Pisco into the syrup and stir thoroughly to blend the ingredients completely. Pour the mix into a blender and add just enough ice to double the volume of liquid in the glass. Blend on high to completely crush the ice. Add one egg white and blend on high for one minute. Transfer to a glass and serve immediately in either old-fashioned or white wine glasses.

Traditionally, a drop of Angostura Bitters is placed in the middle of the foam in each glass. A shake of cinnamon powder is also common.

Simple Syrup
Ingredients

2 cups sugar
1 cup water

Again, this is a recipe by ratio and it can be left to personal preference. You first bring the water to a boil, then dissolve into this the sugar. Once the sugar is fully dissolved, you remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool. The resultant liquid is easily stored in a plastic squeeze bottle to make it easy to add to cocktails as necessary.

Being that I HAVE a bottle of Peruvian Pisco in my cupboard sitting untouched, I'll have to make one and see for myself.

to get a good idea of the taste you can simply make a pisco tonic - 2 oz pisco, over ice with tonic and a slice of lime. its a great summer drink.

My favourite Drinks-With-The-Girls concoction:

Flirtini: in a wine glass, pour one shot of vodka then fill with equal amounts of pineapple juice and sparkling white wine, then garnish with a strawberry. Fantastic in summer.

On the topic of summer drinks - I give you one that is stupidly simple, and bloody brilliant.

Cointreau lemon lime bitters. (I should think of a more original name than that.)

Just make up your normal lemon lime bitters, and throuw in a measure of Cointreau.

Another brilliant one was a specialty of a barman mate of mine, his name is Nick hence the name.

Ladies and gentleman, I give you, one of the gtreatest drinks of all time, liquid panty remover itself, The NICKELODEON

Highball glass
1 measure bourbon (Wild turkey works really well)
1 measure vodka
lemonade (sprite lemonade, not the old school style)
dash lime juice cordial (Bickfords is best, the style that is in a lemon lime bitters)
twist lemon.

These things are brilliant. You can hardly taste the alcohol in them, and mess you up. I've gotten many people hooked on these. Goodness in it's purest form.

Few drinks have been abused to the extent of the sublime and simple Margarita. Once an austere and refreshing drink, classical in it's simplicity it has become a monster in the hands of merchandising and mass production.

The origins of the drink are a bit controversial but all are connected to Mexico and all include mixing a the drink with an orange-flavored alcohol such as Grand Marnier, Cointreau or Triple-Sec. The reason the drink has become so varied is the ease of switching the lime juice with other fruit juices.

My philosophy with the drink is the same as my philosophy for cooking in general. Keep it simple and use good ingredients. In the spirit of that, keep salt to a minimum. Like with the odious habit of Tequila shots with salt and lime, the use of salt is a technique that hides the taste of inferior alcohol. If you use a good Tequila, omit the salt or only coat half the glass.

Margarita
Ingredients

4 ounces good-quality Tequila
2 ounces Triple Sec
1.5 ounces fresh lime juice
1 oz Simple Syrup (see below)
Ice
Coarse salt, for rimming the glass
Lime slices

Combine Tequila (two parts), Triple Sec (one part), lime juice with Simple Syrup (one part - combined). [I know this doesn't work out given the amounts above. But you should make these in bulk and mix the lime juice and simple syrup ahead of time] Add ice and stir well.

To create a salt rimmed glass, take one of the lime rinds from above and rub the drinking surface of a chilled glass so it is barely moist. Dip the edge of the glass into coarse salt.

Pour the Margarita into the glass and garnish with a lime slice.

(Note: To make with crushed ice, mix the ingredients in a blender with roughly broken ice and blend until the ice is finely crushed but not pureed to the point it becomes liquid.)

Simple Syrup
Ingredients

2 cups sugar
1 cup water

Bring the water to a boil, then add the sugar. Once the sugar is fully dissolved, you remove the pan from the heat and allow it to cool. Store refrigerated in a plastic squeeze bottle.
