About 5 minutes ago I thought to my self "Damn, I'm hungry... I know! I'ma eat a corndog." So I throw a corndog in the microwave, but before I can close the door a moth flys in. I think to my self again, "whoa, a moth in the microwave. How convienient!" and set the timer to 45secs then proceed stare at the moth waiting for it to burst into flames, explode, or something... at the very least I expected him to stop flying from wall to wall. But alas, the buzzer goes off (actually it went DING, but anyway), I open the door, and the moth flys out apparently unscathed. Though he seemed to be flying very squigidily. How does something with the wonderful ability to cook corndogs fail to make a moth die?!?!:(

maybe it was one of those rumoured Super-moths?
oh no! we're all doomed, DOOMED!!!

You know that that moth is going to get superpowers and demolish all of Tokyo now, don't you....

Better microwave a turtle to battle it then

There is not enough water in the moth to boil - so the moth is unaffected by the microwave.

Apparently, Ive been told that cockroaches are affected either.

That never occured to me... I have a radioactive-mutant moth living in my kitchen

I'm certain that you CAN microwave a cockroach and it will die. I tried it - in a friend's microwave - and it fucked with him.

My advice is to find another moth and give it a whirl for a longer time. Try also to corral the sucker under a glass so that he stays in the full beam of the magnetron. That oughta teach the nasty little lepidoptera a lesson he won't forget - or remember for that matter...

Here's an idea. Don't torture living things. Ok, so it's just a moth. I still don't think you should do what you've been doing?

hehe :) Flys are unaffected too. 10 years ago now I had one fly into the nuke machine while warming something up. I watched it fly around merrily. And at the end it flew out and seemed unaffected.

Small insects are not affected by microwaves because they are generally smaller than the wavelength of the microwave energy (~30mm) and therefore do not absorb any large amount of radiation.

Launch your own Nuclear Holocaust !!!

Nuke a cocky in a microwave oven today!!

For the energy of the microwaves to be absorbed the food will have to have some conductive properties, since it is really just acting as an antenna for electromagnetic energy (as in radio waves)... Water is a convenient substance for making stuff conductive :)

*evil grin*

I just remembered my microwave is a Convection / Microwave. Microwave alone may not kill bug, but Microwave plus 230 degrees C should even the match a little...

Anyway, If you _really_ wanted to kill some poor innocent insectoid-like creature in a microwave, i believe that it would have to go longer than 45 seconds. More like 5 mins. Those cockroach arseholes are fucking indestructible.

But then my corndog would be really fucking hot, bah!

Nope, roaches are unaffected. Spiders, ants or flys either.
Rats however are a different story!

if you microwave a grape, you can make plasma

I understand that if you put a kitty in the microwave...

That everything after that will come out tasting like pussy.

Plus, not too many men like to eat it....

hah yeah I used to do that all the time, cut the grape in half and just make it so that there is a little piece of skin connecting the two halves and plasma will attach to the smoke particles and make a plume in the middle of the microwave...good stuff

Depends on the power & the length of time, Microwaves can kill them(they pop), some extermination companies have been known to use magnetrons to kill roaches in wall caverties, They(& scorpians) will survive atomic radiation though.

hmm. Weird.

I think that it doesnt matter whether it has water in it or not, doesn't it? The micro-waves just move teh pstricles of food faster, and the increased osccilations (sp?) result in a higher temp.

You need water or another substance with either conductivity or electric dipoles in it. An electric field will create a dipole moment and turn the water molecyles. In a microwave oven the field varies very fast and the dipoles start spinning very fast. The heat in this case is caused by friction. One could also argue there's a magnetic field in place but both fields are so closely connected that I guess either one is an accurate enough explanation.

DumHed's comments apply too but I wouldn't stick any conductors there unless you want a spectacular light show. :) In that case there usually are no electric dipoles but the rapid change of the magnetic fields will create interesting effects on the free electrons.

I realised the other night that moths are stupid. One flew into my kitchen at night and just kept running into my kitchen light. It then dawned on me that they must be close to the dumbest creatures on earth

Candles are a good way to inspire a moth to suicide.

While on the subject of Microwaves. Eggs are not microwave-able. But, worth trying (providing you've got someone else to clean up).

I have eaten excellent microwaved eggs, both poached and scrambled, and I am near certain that SOC has tried the scrambled variety of nuclear egg.

McDonalds microwave their scrambled eggs? Well I never!

And I think Stocking meant *whole* eggs still in their shell!!!:p

True story, microwaved scrambled eggs are good, as are poached. But microwaving the little bugger in it's shell is another story.

I have no idea, but MissBishi does

I think microwaving an egg in the shell can be successful if you put a tiny pin-hole in the top, can't be certain though.

I find it amusing that SOC visited MisterBishi, MissBishi cooked for him and SOC commented on the Maccy D's eggs!

I am glad I didn't cook for him when he visited me, I did the sensible thing and took him and Stocking out for pizza!

I don't think that was microwaved though...

What can I say - the really BAD food (ie, Maccas eggs) stayed in my memory longer than the really GOOD food (ie, MissBishi's eggs)

I think this should be moved to the food & cooking forum, Y'know, just in case someone fancies some Bogon moth chips & was planning to try using the microwave to make them.
