i have a skin allergy to chlorine.
so i can't use my pool.

when people ask me about a salt water pool i have to remind them about what salt is made of.

NaCl

that's right people, sodium CHLORIDE

pool salts are chlorine based... as opposed to fluorine based which some rock salts may be.

so don't tell me to get a salt water pool... cos we already have one :D

Get a fresh water pool then? :D

utopian

the costs of that are immense... as you'd have to change the water quite frequently.

if we ever got lakeside property (on a decent lake) i'd go swimming in it

u can't be allergic to NaCl (or chloride ions)... ur body is full of it (have u ever been swimming in teh sea?). Perhaps it is some other chemicals (artificial or otherwise) in the pool that u have problems with. I would suggest test-swimming more in NaCl pools. Our local pool has ozone (O3)... maybe that is an option.

yeh, i've had a look at ozone pools.. haven't been in one yet

i get itches in the sea as well... it's a bitch

as well as the chlorinated water that comes out of the tap... drinking is ok, not as much skin on the inside

showers aren't fun :(

and i itch when i sweat... god damn heat

Maybe you should cut off all your skin, that way you can grow new skin

showers aren't fun :(How do you go with tank water?

Allergies are funny things... if you have a base level allergy (which may not necessarily even be diagnosed) it will increase your allergy reaction to all sorts of other substances.

absorption into the body is ok

it's just absorption into the skin that's a bummer

as for other allergies...

my skin is also allergic to sunlight, if left long enough, the exposed areas turn pink :(

The problem you may be having is the way hypochorous acid (a by product the chlorine they use for water treatment) reacts with your perspiration. If this is not the case it is likely that the chlorine is sensitizing your skin to some other allergen.

As for taking showers you might want to consider a chlorine filter.

Utop, before my parents moved and sold my childhood home (*sob*) our swimming pool was ozone. It *rocked*!!!

the water was really soft, and slightly bubbly. It also had that awesome headspinning smell like you get if you inhale from a box of radox bath salts.

*sigh* the guy who bought the house was a builder who knocked it down and filled the pool in. And I don't know anyone else with a ozone pool. But that would be my choice if I ever had a pool again.

i dangled my legs in the pool today when 2 of my friends came over for a swim, and now they're all itchy :(

have you been tested with bromine?

I heard it can be used as a pool disinfectant.

also, try rubbing moisturizer into your skin before and after swimming... I have similar reactions to clorinated water, although not as extreme. Pools get me, but not showers.

I like spas. I like Turkish baths. I like baths and showers too (though they are private). I like sitting on the beach if it is not windy and I have something to do, assuming I don't get sandy.

I hate swimming at the beach because I get sandy and icky and argghhghg. I hate swimming in pools because... well I don't really mind it if it is a really hot day and the pool is somewhat heated. I don't like getting wet that much in a pool though, because ultimately I will know it will end horribly when I start to cool down to the temperature of the pool and have to then GET OUT of the pool into even colder temperatures. If I like swimming I'd probably like it more. If the pool is really well heated then I'd probably get in of my own accord.

Utop,
When I was a wee one, we had a pool which wasn't chlorine or salt. It used a chemical called "baquacil", which seemed to work pretty well, only drawback was it left a REALLY bad taste in the mouth (if you gargle with it while swimming).

Check it out:

Try adding a metal ion solution. Silver ions for example act as a very effective sanitiser and greatly reduce the required level of chlorine. They are also PH neutral, and are not affected by sunlight.

It's actually the Scottish that wear kilts mate, the Irish tend to wear balaclavas and camo kit.

Irish schoolgirls wear kevlar.

I hate TV adverts. Theres been an advert playing for ACT test preperation... advising parents to help their kids study.
In the commercial they ask the child to locate "Chloride" on the periodic table.
I want to throw a toaster at the TV every time. I dont know why, it just angers me.

I hade an allergy to chlorine because of my asthma, at work there is a chlorine like chemical that goes by the trade name Tsunami 100, first time I was exposed to that all my muscles & joints siezed up & I felt a crushing sensation on my chest, by the 3rd time I'd been around this stuff though it had no effect on me.

We use a chlorine based bleach at work to sanitise the chopping boards every few months.

Edit: They use a chlorine bleach at work. After my hands went all red and started breaking out in hives, they believed me when I told them instead of them thinking I was just trying to get out of doing it.

(A year late, I know..)

Salt water pools actually contain chlorine gas, just like 'chlorine' pools. You'll find something called a 'chlorinator' which uses electrical current to electrolyse the chlorine ions into chlorine gas.

So chlorine pools = you add nasty only-handle-with-gloves chemicals to the pool, they react in the water and give off chlorine gas. Salt water pools = you add harmless salt to the pool, it dissolves into Na+ and Cl- ions, the chlorinator converts chlorine ions into chlorine gas.
