Just started getting into anime, am liking The Get backers, Azu Manga Diaoh, and the Cowboy bebop movie. never really appreciated it before ( besides Akira).
I thought ZGeek woiuld be a good place to find other Anime nuts, and see what else would be good to check out.....and not just porn and fan shots!!

Great teacher onizuka, kenron Butosai. Both Ghost in the shell movies and the stand alone complex series.

I recently watched Memorizu (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113799/)@Memories,
The 3rd segment called "Cannon Fodder" by Katsuhiro Otomo was particularly fine.

Trying to get me hands on the Cowboy bebop dvd.

These are my two absolute favourite anime series in the entire universe:
Stellvia of the Universe - what Starfleet Academy would've been like if it were a juniour high school
Great Teacher Onizuka - it's never outside the borders of quirky and outrageous. completely funny but sometimes, just completely wrong. ^_^

I also recommend learning the japanese language, even if it adds 1 year to your undergraduate program. Frees you from reading subtitles and opens up a whole new world for you.

Just getting into it myself. I love Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. Picked up the first of the Gunslinger Girl DVDs just before Christmas. Awesome!! :D And while it's not all anime, The Animatrix is my cup of tea too.

The bleach anime is really really really good. Get extremely good around the 30th episode.

OK, I've been out of the scene for about 12 months - BUT - do yourself a favour and check out:
Irresponsible Captain Tyler
Berzerk
Noir
Chobits
Twelve Kingdoms
Millennium Actress
Perfect Blue

...Now the old school stuff that everyone must watch or they will go insane:

Ranma 1/2 (all seasons, all movies, all OAVs - this is the greatest animes series in the history of the world)
Project A-KO (movies 1 - 3)
Anything made by Stuidio Ghibli post Porko Rosso (haven't seen anything before)
Ah My Goddess (anything with this title or the incorrectly titled "Oh My Goddess")
Urotsukidoji 1: Legend of the Overfiend (fuck the later ones, this one is the only decent one)
Record of Lodoss War (original series)
Bubblegum Crisis & Bubblegum Crash (the original 80s series - this new 2040 bullshit is not worth wiping ones ares with)
Riding Bean (there is only one to my knowledge
Castle Cagliostro (now were getting REALLY old school)

OK, that's all I can think of for now.

Pat Labor is worth a peek.

I'd put Aeon Flux up as manga and well worth a look.

Robotech of course :) but if you're a purist then the three original japanese series that made up the american Robotech (Super Dimensional Fortress Macross [a new dub was just released], Super Dimensional Calvalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada). Most people think SDC: Southern Cross is the weakest of the three, but it happens to be my favorite.
