Weel, here I am on my first ever run at Linux.

Initially I downloaded Ark as it seemed to fit my requirements with regard to desktop functionality. The installation of this was a failure however and resulted in much wrestling in vain to make it work.

Next I dowloaded Ubuntu, and here we are. Has a nice looking interface and is packaged with much useful software.

Anywho, what I am after is a bit of direction on where to start with Linux. What things do I need to learn about first? (remember I know less than nothing about Linux).

If you know of any good help resources written in user friendly ways, then feel free to post them here.

Well, heres to an enjoyable Linux experience.

Cheers

Buy a copy of APC Magazine. It has a DVD that contains ~15 parts of a Mastering Linux series that some complete fuck-knuckle wrote. It was written for n00bs like you.

Most of the stuff you need to know about linux you'll find on the web. The only thing more plentiful than linux zealots are n00bs.

There are a bunch of basic programs you'll need to either get or learn about that will make your life a lot easier. Considering you actually managed to get a working instalation of linux done by yourself tells me you'll have no problem.

Oh man.. I need to write some of this stuff down in a txt document. which is cool cause so many people are starters of linux now, so it's mostly the same old things. Nuffin bad. just repetitive.

Keep Ubuntu, you'll be happy you did. It's mad flexible. and can range from n00b to Masta.

Learn command lines, can't stress that enough. they are your one true friend in linux. yeah everything can be done in a GUI, but knowing the commands will give ya the knowhow to use anything.

Learn why base architectures are the way they are. / /etc /var /bin /sbin /local get some understanding on why things are delegated out compared to windows.

Lot's of tools out there that are handy. grep, ps, ls, more, man, vi, ssh, etc. a lot are command line, but so damn useful. hardly a day goes by where I don't use this "ps aux | grep application"

Know there's 1000 ways in linux to do a job.

have fun!
