I really really really really really hate this movie. It is a crap movie with no plot, no story, no likeable characters, no goals, and no purpose. It does have funny moments and thus is funny o quote. especially Rex Quando. But from the view of someone who wanted to se a decent movie, I nearly pooped in the pop corn i was that bored.

It also annoys me that people say "OMFG it's such a funny movie! You dont like it? OOO you must be one of those people that dont like it" It really really really pisses me off. They go on about how its the best movie in the world... when its not!

Does anyone else hate this movie and the people who think it is nicks shiz? the shiznick? Or do you foolish earth monkeys like it in the pooper??:ride:

There are two kinds of people.

Those that get it, those that dont.

Im sorry that you cannt find the delicate beauty and humor in this excellent film, but hey.

Funniest bit: "Dont be jellous I have been chatting online to babes all day"

EDIT: The colours in here!! They burn!! They...are kinda cool actually.

I kind of got the feeling that the only really funny thing about this film was all the people who, realising how truly awful this film was, thought it was in fact really cool because it was so awful.

Like I've said to a friend it's not a movie, it's a series of skits using the same characters.
It's infinitely likable in that form.

Pieman, I'm with you brother. I fucking LOATHED this film. I sat through the entire thing with a straight face hoping it would end so I could go to the pub and erase my memory with a few longnecks.

Going by the crowd at the moonlight cinema (where I saw it for the first and last time), this is a film for young, attractive, well off people. There were swarms of these fuckers forcing laughter from their bodies.

The point seemed to be they were laughing AT them, not with them. They were laughing before the punchline at every turn. Laughing at the misfortune of these characters.

I discussed this with a friend, and we agreed that the film was exploitative in a way. Napolean Dynamite is an intensely dislikeable character, as are most of the ensemble with the exception of Pedro (for about 10 seconds). The story is far from original, and relies too heavily on character quirks rather than quality script writing. Or direction. Or cinematography. Or editing. Or sound. It's just a poor effort all round.

'Tis a cool film. It's all about the characters, with story and the rest being secondary (or even tertiary) considerations.

Enjoy it for what it is, or just bust out the LOTR special editions if you want a conventional movie experience.

well i enjoyed the film and found it funny.
But its the sort of film thats not everyones gup of tea. Doesnt mean there's anything wrong with people who like it, just because you're too simple minded to understand humor that doesnt involve adam sandler.

Druckfugged is spot on.

To anyone who likes this film, I truely pity you.
Being offbeat/quirky doesn't excuse the utter neglect shown to the fundementals of making a screenplay like plot, story, and character development.

for those you you who still don't understand, heres a graph:
Life Aquatic <----------I---------->Napolian Dynamite
(Awesome) <----------I---------->(Shit)

It's like becoming an 'abstract' or 'graphiti' artist because you don't have the talent/patience to become a real artist.

This concludes GruffNutz is always right 101.

I personally love this film but I can see why others don't if your expecting cinematic genius then its not the film for you, but if you want something stupid to laugh at then watch it.

Its funny you say that because Napoleon Dynamite reminded me so much of Life Aquatic.

Both films feature some strange story arcs that somehow meet at one point in the movie. Napoleon Dynamite is definitely a geek movie and thats why it has a cult following among that demographic, but its not that good at all.

Life Aquatic ... after hearing about the 4.5 stars Triple J gave it, I was expecting so much, yet to me it delivered so little. Its a very abstract kind of movie, and thats the problem. I go to the movies to enjoy them, not to think.

Both movies are in the same pot as far as film-making and plot devices are concerned.

Talking to my mates I've found there are two types of comdedic movies you either love or hate.

People who love 'Napoleon Dynamite' or 'The Party' (my two favourites) usually hate the comedic style of humour found in dry black comedy like 'The Royal Tenenbaums' or 'The Life Aquatic' (I hated these!)

And vise versa.

I liked all of them that I had heard of, but I have never seen "The party"

Check out Wet Hot American Summer. It's comedy, but weirder.

Perhaps it only appeals to those among us who don't take life, or ourselves, very seriously?

Clearly I dont take any of the above seriously, and I thought it was teh winnar.

you lot ^^ with your anal love of "real art" and "fundamentals" of film making, and highbrow disdain for Napoleon, are boring, no fun types who probably have boring, no fun sex lives.

IMO of course :)

oh PS: go learn about abstract art before you dis it. Its is now a totally validated art movement, like pop art, but I guess you reckon Andy Warhol was too untalented and impatient to become a real artist yes? I mean cambell soup cans, thats not art is it!!!! thats just mass produced consumer rubbish.

Don: Hey Napoleon, did you wet the bed last night?
Napoleon Dynamite: Hey Don, did you take a dump in your bed last night?
Don: I could kick your butt Napoleon so I'd shut up
Napoleon Dynamite: Why don't you go tell your mom to shut up
Don: What'd you say?
Napoleon Dynamite: Whatever I feel like I wanna say
Don: Did you say something about my mom?
Napoleon Dynamite: Maybe I did and maybe I didn't
Don: Do you wanna die Napoleon?
Napoleon Dynamite: Yeah right. Who's the only one here who knows the illegal ninja moves from the government?

GENIUS.

And yes, I loved napoleon, tenenbaums and life aquatic so go figure, I dont think this type of comedy needs to be looked into that much, either you like it or you dont, there is no great mystery behind it all.

DarkWave

The thing that annoys me about is that it could've been so much better with a plot! The moments from it are hilarious, most of it is, but it lacks basic story and turning points.
It seems to much like it wasn't developed and was just ahalf-arsed attempt at comedy that morphed a movie gathering a cult following. It probably only gained the cult following cos it's 'abstract' and 'artistic'.
The movie itself does not annoy me, it annoys me that it missed out on the oppurtunity to be an awesome movie.

loved it. saw it on recommendations from friends, and I thought it was awesome. some scenes were so funny that I hurt myself laughing.

love the bo staff bit and illegal ninja moves that have already been quoted, and kip with the internet babes.

- What are you gonna do today, Napoleon?
- Whatever I feel like I wanna do. Gosh!

I like a lot of dry, dark comedy, and this really appealled to me although I don't know if it really qualifies as either of those adjectives.

however sirtwist saw it with me, sat there silently for about 30 mins while I laughed myself silly, and then left the room. *shrug* each to their own.

oh yeah, here are some more quotes I like:

Napoleon Dynamite: Stay home and eat all the freakin' chips, Kip.
Kip: Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.

Uncle Rico: So what do you think?
Kip: It's pretty cool, I guess.
Uncle Rico: Ohhhh, man I wish I could go back in time. I'd take state.
Napoleon Dynamite: This is pretty much the worst video ever made.
Kip: Napoleon, like anyone can even know that.

Don: Hey, Napoleon. What did you do last summer again?
Napoleon Dynamite: I told you! I spent it with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines!
Don: Did you shoot any?
Napoleon Dynamite: Yes, like 50 of 'em! They kept trying to attack my cousins, what the heck would you do in a situation like that?
Don: What kind of gun did you use?
Napoleon Dynamite: A freakin' 12-gauge, what do you think?

Kip: It's a time machine, Napoleon. We bought it online.

I think the fact that the actors, especially Jon Heder, play it all so straight is what makes it funny. If they had deliberately hammed it up and tried to play for laughs it would have ruined it.

I saw it on the recommendations from friends.

And I thought it was a steaming hot pile of shit. I was pissed off with my friends (still am actually) and thats 2 hours of my life that ill never get back.

There was probably one or two moments in the film that made me smile - and thats about it. The only reason I watched it to the end was a small glimmer of hope that I was holding that Naoplean and Pedro would come to school armed with AK47's and go colombine on everyone's arses. But not even that happened.

The whole movie is based around the most boring, dry, unimaginative losers you could imagine in a dead shit town, USA. I felt like a loser just watching them. Like c'mon thats been done a million times before!

As far as High School based movies go, this was the worst one ive ever seen.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club ftw.

A bit off topic... but although I loved the life aquatic, TRT just didn't do it for me. However, I think both pale in comparison with Rushmore. God damn, that was a good film.

Seriously. God damn good film.
