Melvins are the Kings of quirky rock. Since Gluey Porch Treatments way back in the heyday of the grunge era (who cringed at the G word then? Hmm?) to the present day they have remained progressive and inovative, and, most importantly, FUN.
Lustmord are the epitomy of dark-ambient. With an impressive back catalouge of works, they use the darker edge of sound to bring what can be described and cold sonic terror. Using feild recordings made in slaughterhouses and crypts, and even bass frequencies lower than 20hz (Can cause vomiting, hearing loss and even death) they would make the perfect companion to a horror movie.
Pigs of the Roman Empire manages to merge two diffrent (but not all together disparate) music types and returns with a interesting and varied result. The songs range from ambient works with a smattering of guitar throughout to more traditional variations such as Pink Bat, taking you from brooding instrumental to blasting punk infuenced metal in the space of three or more tracks.
Those of you familiar with Fantomas (who incidentally share the same guitarist as The Melvins) will enjoy the changes of pace and mood, and those more familiar with the work of bands such as Static X and Godsmack should find the ambient work a welcome change from the usual metal onslaught.
The definate stand out track on here is the 23 odd minute epic Pigs of the Roman Empire. The track is like a homunculous of the entire album. Starting with rumbling, dark ambient (that made me think of Tomb Raider I, for some reason), it gradually snowballs into a swaying metal and industral jam.
Not for everyone, but definately for those looking for more than the same old three-minute-verse-chorus type music.
