Blasting drums with tourtured vocals brings pop-punk into the new millenium.

My Chemical Romance are Emo. Make no mistake. They sing of broken hearts, lost loves, soul searching and self-denial. This is not a bad thing. It makes for a screamingly good album. Violent rock and roll hooks mix seemlessly with crystal clear vocals and little pinches of pop influence.

Its hard to pick a standout track on here. Give 'em Hell Kid has the driving disjointed feel of a power ballad gone horribly wrong, where You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison is straight up driving rcok and roll. MCR has more to offer than other bands of this genre, such as Fall Out Boy or Atreyu. Keeping clear of being too poppy and too metalic, they manage to find a nice meeting point between the two.

Known for his work with Motorhead, Howard Benson's influence can be heard in the very clean rock production, giving a much deeper feel than on MCR's previous release I Brought You My Bullets You Brought Me Your Love, he has managed to extract the push and anger in their sound, without losing the innocence in the pop influences.

The lyrics range from the beautiful, such as in The Ghost Of You:

I never said I'd lie and wait forever
If I died, we'd be together
I can't always just forget her
But she could try

To the downright damaged, as in To The End:

He calls the mansion not a house, but a tomb,
He's always choking from the stench and the fume,
The wedding party all collapsed in the room,
So send my resignation to the bride and the groom.

Let's go down!
This elevator only goes up to ten,
He's not around,
He's always looking at men.
Down by the pool,
He doesn't have many friends,
As they are,
Face down and bloated
snap a shot with the lens!

If you marry me,
Would you bury me?
Would you carry me,
To the end?

(Say goodbye)
To the vows you take,
(Say goodbye)
To the life you make,
(Say goodbye)
To the hearts you break,
And all the cyanide you drank.

She keeps a picture of the body she lends,
Got nasty blisters from the money she spends,
She's got a life of her own and it shows by the Benz,
She drives at 90 by the Barbies and Kens!

If you ever say never too late,
I'll forget all the diamonds you ate.
Lost in coma and covered in cake,
Increase the medication,
Share the vows at the wake!
(Kiss the bride!)

So don't be scared of Emo. Sure, it's not for everyone. But then again, what the hell is? And if there is a band in the genre that deserves more recognition, this is the one. If you like harder edge music, and also enjoy pop music, lighten up and ignore the sledging of your peers and try Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge.

We all know music is good if you sing it all meaningful and then yell your lungs out while playing the same damn chord over and over at the chorus. Remember: Yelling puts the awesome in awesome songs. And stuff.

I hate this band and this album. And the irritating little kids that make up most of its fan base.

Apparently the band feel the same way. According to Gerard Way "Emo is a stinking pile of shit." You can hear their influences in all their songs: Queen, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd. The big, majestic rock'n'roll. Hell, those Black Parade uniforms are a monochromed blending of Freddy Mercury and The Beatles' military uniforms.

My Chemical Romance have something big in common with the greats of 70's Rock: the music is cool, but they have far too many fans who don't know how to just shut the fuck up about their hoity-toity interpretations and just enjoy the bloody music.
