If you're talking about WiFi then yes you'll need to be inside either a free wifi network OR one run by T-Mobile (they're all over london).

If you're talking about using your mobile/cell phone as a modem (using GPRS or the like) then you only need to be in an area covered by cell phone reception (and even then the cell towers have to support GPRS which isn't always the case outside of cities). You connect to our cell phone over bluetooth, infra-red or a cable.

most mobiles have a modem in them that you can hook up through bluetooth. pretty slow though dude (like 9kbps connection for my old panasonic x70). look up your phone on http://www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk, to see what gprs class it is. that will give you some idea of the transfer speeds its capable of.

:goodluck:

hmmmm....T-mobile offers their wifi thingy for $20 a month and that's after you pay the $199 for the hardware. That suxs! esp if you have to be in a "hotspot"

Vodafone and telstra have pcmcia modems that run on the cdma/gsm networks. Most of the major networks provide some form of mobile internet but they all cost a shit load. No help for ppl out of oz.
