I managed to snag an advanced screeening of this last night before it opened and was looking forward to this movie from word on the internet. Presented by Tarrantino is plastered on the posters bigger than the actual director itself, while he doesnt actually have much to do with the movie, you can expect a pretty fucked up movie. It tells a tale of Josh, Paxton and Oli who are backpacking through Europe doing what all backpackers seem to go for.

Sex.

However what they get is not what they were expecting. Stuck in Amsterdam they are directed to Eastern Europe with the promise of many women who go crazy for Americans. After reaching their destination they find the hostel and find some of these women who do infact seem to go crazy for Americans, they get what they came for.

Then it is the girls turn to get what they came for.

I dont want to spoil it too much, but it takes up a grisly pace rather quickly.

Imagine being 10,000 km from home waking up handcuffed by the feet and arms to a chair with a sack over your head and one eye hole cut. Looking around there are scalpels, pliers, chainsaws, any rusty implement that you could think of. While people meet some gruesome demises, there is also a good element of humour, at one point the whole cinema erupted into a huge cheer.

The special effects in this are really quite detailed and gory. Building up more towards the end of the movie. There are some cringeworth scenes, Just dont understimate the kids in the movie. Oh yes, and this movie has some of the most fantastic tits ever. Simply stunning.

Overall, for a horror movie it certainly gains its R rating. Its story isnt that cheesy compared to some of the ones released int he last few years and it does what a good horror movie should do. Makes you jump and cringe.

Definately see it purely for the kids :)

This guy has credits for the Baywatch movie.

How contradictory.

I half expected him to be related to Tim. Alas no, I am dissappointed.

Very much a Saw-esque movie but without the twists that it had.

It keeps your attention throughout the movie.

Do you think this might mean that the Baywatch chickies are going to cuff Hoff down to a chair and exact hideous torture methods on him*??

* Like watching old Baywatch episodes??

http://forum.zgeek.com/gallery/files/3/5/7/2/hostel.jpg It was a cold, rainy Tuesday night on an allegedly spring evening in London, and I found myself waiting in the drizzle at the Odeon Holloway for my girlfriend to arrive on the bus from Camden. A poster for the movie was up on display and I couldn’t believe how bad it was. It was incredibly dark with mostly unintelligible objects thrown together with illegible writing for the credits. Other than A TARANTINO MOVIE in clear bold size 172 font. Oh dear.

Suffice to say it involved 3 backpackers – 2 Americans, 1 Icelander – and a trip from Amsterdam to Slovakia to an unlisted hostel where 3-somes are assured. Gratuitous nudity, stupid plot lines, no sub-titles on seemingly important German language dialogues and incredibly gory scenes follow.

My girlfriend almost left on several occasions. I also felt it went a bit too far a few times. But then again, this is Tarantino and he loves to push the limits of what is acceptable. Once was enough, even if this was the only movie on a long haul flight I wouldn’t watch it again. Other than the sex bits. They rock.

Merged evil's review because the film had already been reviewed by Salted_Chipmunk.

T & A :Stripteas just don't cut it for a good film in my books. I am soooooo sick of people comparing this film to Saw or Wolf Creek. Half the point of both of those movies was the build up of tension, psycholigical thrills, and the gory horror bits last.

Hostel's gore was only what I would call passable, not really cringe factor. I found that I relly didn't give a shit about the characters, and the only real 'character building' scene, where the fella says he saw the girl drown, was a far to obvious and convinient plot device.

See it late at night with the curtains drawn, but don't expect too much from this snore fest:wank:

Aw now!

I thought that the plot of this outsurpassed SAW! You knew it was a gore film, but it wasn't until the last 30 minutes that you realize that all the good guys were going to be the main attraction!
