CowBoy BeBop is without a doubt my favourite anime of all time. The entire BeBop story is covered in six DvDs (only one season) and a movie that stands alone from the series. The movie is great and I highly recommend purchasing it if you want a taste of what BeBop is about.
Cowboy BeBop is a collection of stories about four bounty hunters that reside in the starship BeBop. It is a very bleak view of the future with triads and gangs running almost everything under the sun. They jump from planet to planet looking for fugitives, and always broke and starving. Most of the episodes usually revolve around the crew trying to find something to eat.
The series only last for 26 episodes and though they could easily make more, the creators vision had always been to tell the story and end it. His message throughout the series is: "We are born, we live and then we die" and: "For every beginning, there must be an end". There are so many messages in the series about life and the burdens that we carry. It is suprisingly as deep and heartfelt, as it is funny.
INTRODUCING THE MAIN CHARACTERS
Spike Spiegel
Enter Spike Spiegel, our tragic hero, who has turned his back on his former life as a triad gang member. He is haunted by the past and lives his life as though he is in a dream. Spike is a misfit and is always getting himself (and his friends) into trouble. He fights using Jeet-Kun-Do and is a crazy pilot. Spike is the ultimate tough guy. If Chuck Norris met Spike, Chuck Norris would literally implode with fear. Spike would then light a cigarette and walk away whistling (now you know that's not true - Ed).
Jet Black
Next comes the owner of the starship BeBop, Jet Black. He bought and re-fitted the BeBop after losing his arm in a gun battle while he was a cop. Now he uses his connections to help hunt down bounties. He loves triming his banzai trees and has a heart of gold. His sense of values and decency are distinctly out of place in the world around him.
Faye Valentine
Faye doesn't know her real name. She has no memory of her past and is a compulsive gambler. She gets into even more trouble than Spike and is always screwing her friends over. She is annoying and deserves a good slapping with a big chunk of salami, but, because she has such a nice figure (and isn't too shy to flaunt it) we can forgive her so easily. Faye plays on the hearts of men but for some strange reason the boys on the BeBop seem to be immune to her charms.
Edward
Ed is the last human member of the BeBop. Edward is actually a girl and a genius hacker. She is mental as hell and comes up with some of the funniest sayings I have ever encountered. My favourite is her life lesson: "If you come across a stranger, follow him".
Ed's constant companion is Ein, a super smart dog that they picked up along the way. The dog is worth millions but the crew have no idea about the depth of Ein's intelligence or what he is worth.
The music in Cowboy BeBop is unique blend of Jazz and Techno. Yoko Kanno (http://members.shaw.ca/ykdb/) did the music for this anime and she really knows her stuff. The tunes will stick in your head for ages afterwards.
This series, is the only series that makes me misty eyed watching it. You can feel the characters emotions watching it, and though it is an almost Shakespearian tragedy, you will laugh at the many humourous situations these guys manage to get themselves into.
I highly reccomend buying this series and the movie (not just downloading them you naughty file sharers), and hunting down Fuzzy Dice (http://forum.zgeek.com/member.php?u=1314) and +repping him for having Spike as his avatar. Mind you, if he ever changes it, I will -rep his ass into oblivion!!
CowBoy BeeBop gets a big :8: from The Avatar. End of Story.
