I'm thinking about getting gps for my notebook. Anyone got any advice on these ones I saw on ebay? I'm not sure what's the best features to choose. The idea is to use it in the car.

Also, anyone recommend any software to use with these?

I run oziexplorer on my pda but if you want navigation with your gps travelroute is a good program (I believe) for point to point nav. I would have to say go bluetooth gps as it can be used with any bluetooth device.

Word of warning pirate:

USB GPS systems are still really dodgy on getting strong signals, especially in cities or areas where something comes between you and the GPS satellite. AS a result, getting real-time correct information is still a hit or miss thing. Make sure you get the one with the best reception.

Not had a lot to do with them myself, but a few mates who are into 4wd trips and such have spent a fair amount of time playing with this sort of stuff. These are blokes that will spend barrow loads of cash on anything ever so slightly related to 4WD'ing.

Anyway the general opinion was that the recievers were flaky, often dropping signal, and that the bluetooth link was unreliable. The software seems to also be a weak point.

The advice from them was that you end up with less hassle and cost by getting a dedicated GPS unit like a magellan or garmin. You can still connect these to a pda or laptop to keep and map out your route data.

I'm looking into this as well, I'm keen to pick up a GPS and a 1.5w handheld UHF when the new 4WD arrives in June.
