Im really really keen to switch over to Linux, the only thing holding me back is, will it be compatible with my sound card, i do realise that i will have to find completely new editing software ect. If you guys can suggest anything that would be awesome! Also let me know if my system will be suitable for Linux...im also not to sure about the mobo's compatibility but i haven’t searched to much into that at the moment.
System:
DFI Lanparty Sli D nf4
1 gig ram
AMD64 3700+
E-MU 1212m soundcard.
XFX 6800 graphics.
Thanks guys any help would be great...ive been searching google for days and just want some other peoples opinions. Any would be great!
Ok, the bad news is it isn't supported...yet. One of the ALSA developers was given an 1212m card by Creative but no development support which means he has to reverse-engineer the entire thing. At least they're letting him reverse-engineer it. The last time we played this game with Creative, they tried to beat the ALSA developers to the punch with their own driver and gave up in disgust when the ALSA driver was clearly superior. But it did take time, time you probably don't have. Check here for updates, it seems to be the place for them :

There is an nforce4 professional driver for AMD64 that wants nforce 430/410 motherboards, and I'm not sure of your mobo's pedigree there. There is no standard nforce4 driver otherwise for Linux 32/64.
The video driver WILL work but its not much use to you at the moment, nor is a Linux system for another 3-6 months based on that hardware. This is very disappointing for me also, I want to upgrade my linux box to AMD64 but looks like I'm going to have to put up with the 1st generation stuff.
In any case, the next soundcard I get will emphatically be non-Creative, I want a proper DSP card like those lovely modular Hammerfalls. Yes, there is hard-disk recording software, not all of it free; Linux audio software is something of a moving target :S
