So I work full time IT for a college in New Jersey that charges $20,000 per semester. Despite very hefty capital (including the employee paid cost of $400 per year to park in the company parking lot), rumors abound of this place going belly up in 2006. In an interesting twist, I've been ordered to train a coworker who earns far less than I do to do my job, "in case I'm not here". Layoffs are scheduled for May. So...am I fucked? :deadroot:

Possibly. Get on the front foot with your managers about your concerns. Try to keep it friendly, you may need their references. Polish up the old CV and scout out the job market in your region.

Could be a lot worse, you could of just brought a house. You have a bit of time to save while hanging out for a big fat redundancy package. This news is bond to have a big impact on your productivity, your boss knows this; I look forward to seeing you around here more on company time.
How you handle yourself now is really dependent on what kind of person you are. I am not a very nice person and in a bit of a pissy mood so I suggest you make sure my poorer co-worker knows the intimate details of my salary package before you leave. Nothing like breading a bit of contempt before being kicked out the door.

It doesn't look too good, have a word with your Manager outlining your concerns and worries and then get on with the job of training your lowly paid colleage - try to keep the politics out of training him/ her up for now as there may be plenty of opportunites for this later and you also need to secure a decent reference and leave the Co on seemingly good terms.
It may serve you better to let your lowly paid colleague know about your remuneration package closer to you leaving.

They may just think you are the best to train the new person. Surely if a place was going belly up they would not hire anyone else even if it is for a lower rate?
Have a word with your boss.

Have you considered that they value you so much that they want you to train your replacement because they think you're 'going places'?
Just a thought.
