Some people who frequent slashdot may have already read this guys page but I keep finding myself coming back to it. It is a well written study into the gory details of what makes OSX, or as close as you get without downloading Darwin source code and giving up the next 3mths of your life to trying to understand wtf is going on.

Yeah that's a favourite site of mine, I like his approach and I could read about OS theory and implementation all day :)

If you want to know how operating systems work get this book (http://www.prenhall.com/divisions/esm/app/author_tanenbaum/custom/mos2e/). It's a classic tome that's very readable and covers the most important things. 900+ pages is a lot to stomach but after reading it you know you got the gist of it if you realise why the question "Which OS is the best?" is a waste of time.

I agree, that is quite a good book. I have a copy on my shelf already ;-)

I have an ongoing interest in OS design and implementation, and out of the material I have read I think this guy's site has the most accessable coverage of concepts with respect to a single OS.
My other favourite book is Unix Internals (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0131019082/103-2581118-5540603?v=glance&n=283155), sorry about the Amazon linky. It goes over the key sub-systems in a Unix OS and compares how different implementations handle the same concepts. Brilliant read, you will understand a huge amount more about Unix and general OSs after reading this book. I found the best way to attack this book was by flicking to a section that looks interesting and go from there.

The operating system that I have used the most is Linux. I have not been involved in religious riots involving operating systems, and I really believe that all these systems (including Mac OS X) have flaws, but they all have good things to offer.
