I like a nice bottle of wine with dinner. Specifically red wine.
Does anyone know a decent bottle for under $20? I dont like going over that really...but any tips around that price range are welcome.

John Gehrig 2001 Cab Merlot, usually around $21.00 but you could probably pick it up for $19.00. Awesome drop of red.
But if you're looking to expand your tastebuds a little bit - go Italian:
For something fresh and summery - Pizzini 2004 Sangiovese, or for something with a bit more body to it - Pizzini 2000 Nebbiolo. Both go for around $20.00 per bottle.
All three are from the King Valley in Victoria. Most underated wine region in the country.
I find a mudgee area shiraz is always worth a look as a cheap drop... no specifics, I tend to buy as needed on impulse, not a good way to get wine - always buy in bulk.

Any blend with a merlot in it will usually taste ok.
But goundrey (wa) is the shit.
Anything in red from Margaret River kicks ass actually.
Go the cleanskin that says its from Margaret River.

just had a bottle of Four Sisters 2003 Shiraz. $14
wasn't as bold as a lot of other shirazes, a very nice surprise. thoroughly recommend letting it breathe for an hour or two.

I tried some Chortle's Edge 2002 Shiraz the other day - $19.95, very nice. I don't know if you're partial to shiraz though (I certainly am)

What you having for dinner? There is't any point in having a shiraz, if you are having fish for example.

Tahbilk Cab Sav or Shiraz is great.
If you're after a white, go for their Marsanne.

Merlot can suck my balls. The best wine I've tried in the $20 price range in the last two years is the Kirrihill Clare Valley Shiraz - it is all good.

Burgoise aren't we? Drink whatever you like the taste of.
If you like a Merlot check out a bottle of 2001 McGuigan Bin 300, or buy a bottle of this year's and wait a until around 2010. It's really quite a nice drop. Not sure how much a bottle would be, but from memory it was about $30 in 2001.
Non-vintage red wines that are good are harder to find than non-vintage champagnes. A bottle of this year's Veuve Clicquot or Moet tastes great, although for $75 or so you can find a nice red anyway. And since two is better than one, a couple bottles of Penfolds Bin 407 Cab Sav are surely a better buy.

he was saying that there's good non vintage champagne to be had, and you're probably better off spending your money on a premium red. penfolds wines are awesome, my only criticisms are (1) the good ones are too expensive and (2) most really do have to be cellared for a while before reaching peak.

I find the McGuigan Black Label Merlot to be excellent and it is cheaper still. Try it and see if you agree.

I used to have to do this shit for a job. He said the wine was to have with dinner, so I asked what it was. You need to have flavours complimenting eachother.

having worked in the hospitality industry for 14 years, including 5 of those years working for 2 different wine companies i probably have a *vague* idea of grape variety vs terrior... but hey mang if a pink shirt gives your palate cred then fuck what would i know... (especially seeing as you followed my advice and suggested a cabernet from coonawarra :D )

Cassa introduced me to some Early Harvest wine, and dear god its delicious.
Its low alcohol - which means lower calories, so it might not be your cup of tea. (or wine)
