Iran test-fires missile able to duck radar
TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's military said Friday it successfully test-fired a missile not detectable by radar that can use multiple warheads to hit several targets simultaneously, a development that raised concerns in the United States and Israel.
The Fajr-3, which means "victory" in Farsi, can reach Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East, Iranian state media indicated. The announcement of the test-firing is likely to stoke regional tensions and feed suspicion about Tehran's military intentions and nuclear ambitions.

US to test 700-tonne explosive
The US military plans to detonate a 700 tonne explosive charge in a test called "Divine Strake" that will send a mushroom cloud over Las Vegas, a senior defense official said.
"I don't want to sound glib here but it is the first time in Nevada that you'll see a mushroom cloud over Las Vegas since we stopped testing nuclear weapons," said James Tegnelia, head of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.
Tegnelia said the test was part of a US effort to develop weapons capable of destroying deeply buried bunkers housing nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.

Plans for Massive Blast in Nevada Draw Fire
LAS VEGAS - Plans for a Pentagon-led experiment that involves detonating 700 tons of explosives in the desert drew criticism from state leaders and a disarmament activist.
A mushroom cloud rises over the Nevada Test Site (NTS) after the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) detonated a low-yield nuclear weapons effects test near Mercury, Nev., northwest of Las Vegas, July 11, 1962. Plans for a Pentagon-led experiment that involves detonating 700 tons of explosives in the desert drew criticism from state leaders and disarmament activists Thursday March 30, 2006. The explosion scheduled for June 2 at the Nevada Test Site is part of an effort to design a weapon that can penetrate solid rock formations in which a country might store nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction. TEHRAN, March 31 (RIA Novosti) - Iran successfully tested a new Fajr-3 ballistic missile Friday, local television reported, citing military sources.
Iranian television said the rocket is versatile and also invisible to radar.
Earlier in the day Iran began large-scale navy exercises in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, a strait connecting the Islamic Republic to the Arabian Sea. The training exercises will continue through April 6 and involve over 17,000 servicemen.
During the maneuvers, around 1500 military vessels, planes, helicopters and missile launch systems will be used.

Iran said Sunday that it had test-fired what it described as a sonar-evading underwater missile [video of the test here]...
The new missile is among the world's fastest and can outpace an enemy warship, Gen. Ali Fadavi of the country's elite Revolutionary Guards told state television.
General Fadavi said only one other country, Russia, had a missile that moved underwater as fast as the Iranian one, which he said had a speed of about 225 miles per hour.
Could this be real, Iranian scientists did learn in American Univ. so it is possible. As well as indefensible.:Stripteas

So since 20% - 40% of the world's oil flows through the Straits of Hormuz ... some 3 miles wide at its narrowist point. I look forward to a fucking huge petrol price rise when USA/Israel fuck about again.

Iran threatens to close Hormuz
4 February 2006: Iranian president Mohammad Ahmadinejad is evaluating an all out military response, including closing the Strait of Hormuz, if Iran is attacked by US-led Western powers for its WMD programme.
Iran told this plainly in a meeting with Russia last week, adding that the world would have to pay a “heavy price” for any attack, as it would close the Hormuz and search and apprehend tankers and ships and terminate means of sea communications, even if they were commercial.
Iran also threatened retaliation against any country providing the US with bases or other means to launch its military campaign

Iran raises tensions with a show of strength
On Sunday Iran announced another success: the launching of "the world's fastest underwater missile", travelling at about 195 knots, or three times faster than the fastest western torpedo.
General Ali Fadavi, deputy naval commander of the Revolutionary Guards, said the weapon could overcome sonar systems because of its speed and its movement underwater. Weapons experts said it appeared to be a Soviet rocket-powered torpedo known as the Shkval.
However, it cannot track a target and has a range of less than four miles. A former commander of the Russian Black Sea fleet, Admiral Eduard Baltin, said Iran's torpedo announcement was little more than a bluff.

Iran fires 'top secret' new missile in helicopter test
Tehran - Iran said it has successfully test-fired a "top secret" missile, the third within a week, state run television reported. It called the missile an "ultra-horizon" weapon and said that it could be fired from all military helicopters and jet fighters. A video clip showed it being fired from a target and hitting a target on the surface of water.
The broadcast called the test a "turning point" in Iran's missile tests. It said the new missile did not require the OTHT (over the horizon targetting) system that other missiles needed.

Here's a crude graphic on the (Russian) Skhval, although the Iranians claim to have made further modifications.

Shkval warhead is around 210kg - lightweight compare to other heavyweight torpdoes. Shkval range is around 7500 yards.
You must appreciate the operating circumstances of the Iranian Navy. They know very well that they cannot operate major surface combatants, as they would be sitting ducks for the vast array of air, surface, and subsurface oppenents they would be facing. So, the Iranian military is being forces to develop weapons that are small, easily concealable (hide one on a fishing boat or small surface transport), and hit hard. Their only chance would be to sneak up on a surface combatant, and unload a shot at very short range. But then again, if you look at the operations of the Iraninan Navy and the IRGC over the last 20 years, they have perfected that tactic.
There are reports that the Russian Shkval II has a semi-active guidance system and can reach 300+ knots.

Nevada "mushroom cloud" blast delayed indefinitely
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon's plan for a massive detonation of conventional high explosives in Nevada to test the effectiveness of weapons against deeply buried targets has been postponed indefinitely, officials said on Thursday.
The National Nuclear Security Administration, part of the Energy Department, said it was withdrawing its finding that the planned detonation of 700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil in the Nevada desert would cause "no significant" environmental impact, the agency said.

Iranian drone plane buzzes U.S. aircraft carrier in Persian Gulf
TEHRAN, May 30 (RIA Novosti) - A pilotless Iranian reconnaissance plane circled for 25 minutes over a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf before returning safely to its base, a senior Iranian official said Tuesday.
"Our pilotless reconnaissance plane flew over the USS Ronald Reagan in the Persian Gulf unnoticed to the Americans for 25 minutes," the official said, according to Iran's Fars agency.
He did not say when the flight took place, but added that U.S. radars picked up the unmanned aerial vehicle after 25 minutes, and that four USAF fighters and two helicopters were scrambled to intercept it. However, the Iranian plane had already crossed the border back into Iran and landed at its base.
"This points to holes in the U.S. military reconnaissance systems deployed in the Persian Gulf," the Iranian official said.

U.S. cautious on new Iran diplomacy
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration cautiously welcomed Iran's new willingness to negotiate over its disputed nuclear program on Tuesday, even as it intensifies efforts to use international trade and financial levers to pinch the clerical regime. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Tuesday his country was ready for "negotiations on Iran's nuclear issue without any preconditions," a reference to suspended talks with European nations that would give Iran modest economic incentives to drop suspect nuclear activities.
