It's been 15 years since Massive Attack exploded onto the pop scene with their classic record, Blue Lines. The Bristol-based collective became known for their dark, powerful and influential sounds. Massive Attack are one of the most revolutionary bands from Bristol which also gave rise to groups and acts such as Tricky and Portishead. They have coined a new genre called Trip-Hop which has been imitated by many acts since Massive's birth.

Each album released by Massive, sees them pushing the boundaries thus producing unpredictable and dynamic music. Mezzanine, one of Massive's most successful and influential albums, is a dark and moody collection of heavy beats and smooth bass lines producing an atmosphere perfect for staying at home on a gloomy evening.

Now the elder statesmen in the electronica scene, deserving of a greatest hits collection and now it is here. Collected was released on Monday 27, March 2006 and it contains an awesome selection of the hits found in the Massive discography.

First, there is a selection of the most popular songs from every MA album released thus far, Blue Lines, Protection, Mezzanine and 100th Window. The selection is excellent and includes many styles for which the group is known for in particular, 'Teardrop', 'Angel', 'Inertia Creeps', 'Unfinished Sympathy', and 'Protection' all of which have appeared as soundtracks in a number of films (http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Massive%20Attack:1927010283:page=discography:sub page=soundtrack).

Second, the selection of songs on 'Collected' is perfect for any mood whether chilling out on a night alone or cranked up before heading out. 'Collected' is a great compilation for a number of reasons.

The special edition also includes a DVD packed with all their great singles as well as a second CD containing B sides and previously un-released tracks. The new track "Live With Me" featuring Terry Callier is from the new album "Weather Underground" due for release next year. This track sees the group go back to their more soulful non-experimental music which was the norm pre-Mezzanine.

I highly recommend this album and it makes an exceptional addition to any CD collection. For those who already own the full MA collection, this is a brilliant compilation, offering a brand new track, a CD full of B-sides and previously un-released material as well as all the MA music videos.

For those that are unfamiliar with Massive Attack, there is no better entry point that this. 'Collected' is an awesome album...buy it and after a few listens you will love it and it won't be leaving your CD player for months.

The last list you post there with "dvd side" written beside them, are they vids? What would make this a good purchase for someone who owns all their stuff already?

The DVD side includes all the video clips for the specified tracks. This is a must have for those that are MA fans as the compilation is brilliant, the second CD contains un-released tracks and b-sides that you can't get on any previous releases plus the first CD contains the new 'Live With Me' track.
