Just curious, but under what circumstances is killing someone considered legal in Australia.

I think it's perfectly legal (and indeed encouraged by the community at large) to bash emo kids to death with hard copies of the dribble published on their live journals.

i'd say under defense of strict immediate threat to life
that is if you are being physically attacked with intent on the attackers behalf to kill you.

When they pose a threat to yourself or people around you and the required force to keep them down is terminal, when a member of the armed services and given the order to engage or when anti-war activists begin a peaceful rally against the government
Actually, I'm not sure about that third one. That could've been a media beatup

If you're in the armed forces, police forces, etc and fully follow operational procedures.
If you're a nurse and you decide to nil-by-mouth the gerries under your care.
Politicians with shit social policies.
Guards and managers of refugee processing centres.
As any other ordinary member of the public ... dunno ?. BTW let's not get all boozing/smoking/drugs and baby-in-the-womb sidetracked.

Is it legal to kill yourself in Oz ?.
Even if it isn't, most of us agree if you are from Oz, it would be doing the world a favor if you went ahead and did it.

I just find this question bizarre.
I daresay it isn't, but when you kill yourself, what's the law going to do? Lock up your corpse? Fine it? Make it do community service?
Is there a point I am missing here, or was this question worded wrong?
Just wondering....

euthanasia was legal in NT when I lived in Oz, don't know if the laws have changed or not.
Why do you care solely about killing people in Oz anyway? you planning a trip?

actually... i'd like to know if Suicide is a criminal offence... or rather Attempted Sucide, providing that you would have to fail to get charged and convicted...

Sashasword, I concur with my ambiguity .... and Canalien's posting is close enough to what I meant.
Much to the sadness of some ZGeekers, I was not planning to visit Oz just to top myself.

I don't know about today but until 1926 it was legal to kill aboriginals there. To quote British High Commisioner Arthur Hamilton Gordon from 1883.
The habit of regarding the natives as vermin, to be cleared off the face of the earth, has given the average Queenslander a tone of brutality and cruelty in dealing with "blacks" which it is very difficult to anyone who does not know it, as I do, to realise. I have heard men of culture and refinement, of the greatest humanity and kindness to their fellow whites, and who when you meet them here at home you would pronounce to be incapable of such deeds, talk, not only of the wholesale butchery (for the iniquity of that may sometimes be disguised from themselves) but of the individual murder of natives, exactly as they would talk of a day's sport, or having to kill some troublesome animal.
But I understand you guys now have a revisionist historian, Keith Windschuttle, saying that they died from boredom and chicken pox.

they were considered flora and fauna until the referendum in 1967, one of the few times the constitution has changed.

and many aboriginal children were stolen from their parents by the state.

Isn't it still technically legal for an Englishman to kill a Welshman on common ground at the England/Wales border ?.
I'll research this one and post a new thread ...

It okay to kill someone, as long as your drunk and behind the wheel.
You only get a slap on the wrist then, so if you want to kill someone, run them down, then drink a shit load of beers.

It is OK to kill someone if they look at you funny, or you don't like the way they are dressed.

You don't get "convicted" as such, but if the police or someone in the medical service was notified of this, They can "schedule" you under the Mental Health Act, and you get locked up involuntarily in a psychiatric institution to prevent self harm (and/or harm to others).
You remain there until such time when two psychiatrists believe you are no longer a threat to yourself or others. It takes two psychs to put you in, and two psychs to get you out. In relative terms of "punishment" I guess you could say that would be being forced into involuntary treatment whether it be meds, counselling, ECT, etc (but once again, the ECT needs two psych's approval).
It doesn't go down onto a criminal record. Just a Medical.
...or if you pretend to have a mental illness
This also will fall into the hands of the Mental Health Act.
